I was looking at an older ERSI map of my town and noticed that there was a "Scout Camp" in the area that is now an Industrial Park. I used the free mapping software Maprika and overlayed it with a current map and discovered that the Scout camp is still there. A mention on the Facebook page of our towns history revealed that the camp was built for Boy and Girl Scouts in the late 40's, had its heyday in the 60's and was shuttered in the mid 90's. The property is currently owned by the county Industrial Developemnt Board. I drove by it yesterday and there are still remnants of cabins and such. Can't wait to get the time to go out and do a proper search of the grounds.

Best of luck, that would be a fun place to detect that's for sure.

There's a Scout Camp [that I actually used to attend back in the day] that closed down a few years ago. The property was purchased by a local Conservation organization, who I contacted seeking permission to detect. They said "no" citing safety concerns, informing me that they were concerned about some areas of ground contamination or other such gobbledygook. I think I'm gonna try again to get permission, now that some time has passed, and perhaps I can convince them that I'm only digging a handful inches and that I'd avoid specific areas if they are still concerned. Being a conservation organization, I'd think that they'd want to see some of the artifacts I might unearth, and maybe actually use them in some sort of display or write-up detailing the history of the property...that's gonna be my "sell" to them anyway.

I love hunting Scout camps. You just never know what you may find. We had one 16 miles west of us that gave up a lot of silver. Hunted that place off and on for twelve years. Sadly, it was sold to a conservancy, and they no longer allow detectors. Thats ok, we covered darn near every square inch of that place.

If you were successful at one of the outer camp sites (across the lake, quite a ways from the main lodge area) and happened to find a quarter (pre 1976), that was mine. I assume that you put in a great amount of effort to locate to owner, but couldn't "find" me, so it's OK if you keep it. 😄
