Harbor Freight C-tech Pinpointer Switch Fix

I did a battery test last night. I realized that it still had the same 9volt that came with it. It tested at 7volts and the pinpointer would start signaling around 0.75" for a quarter and 1" for a nickel with the sensitivity adjusted to peak. I gained an inch when I put in the fresh Duracell. I could instantly feel the difference the new battery made through the vibrating motor.
I usually use the batteries in a device until it stops operating... I have learned a valuable lesson.

Thanks for all the tips. I picked one of these up yesterday at the local Harbor Freight. They had one left in stock. I took the advice in advance and dropped in a new switch, with some extra length of wire to help make it easier to install. I also replaced the speaker with a vibrator motor. I slipped one of the chair nibs on the end as well.

One other add on that I thought would help was a bigger sensitivity control knob. I just dropped one on over top of the existing knob, this should also help keep the dirt out.

Now please tell the rain to stop pouring so I can go out and try it.

Great idea on the knob replacement generalwalton I have been wanting to replace mine for a while.
I hunt with heavy gloves on during the winter and the stock knob is nearly impossible to turn without taking off my gloves.

I never considered one would fit right over the existing knob.

Switch

How about using a mercury switch so it is always on when pointing down?
Although you have to carry it with the stick facing up.
I picked one up today at a near by Harbor Freight. Couldn't resist.

I did these 2 mods (replace switch add bigger sens. knob) last night. For super cheep money it really improved the quality / usability of the unit. Still less than 30$ all told. Woo hoo!
