General Metal Detecting Guide

Great article. I just registered as I just got my first detector last night. Great information and I'll be reading as much information on this forum as I can before I venture out. Thanks.

there are lots of good info here to read, also take a peep into the chat room during the evening times we have a few regulars that can give advice as well.

I am a 6 month veteran at MDing

I am retired, and started started MDing last spring. I am 67 and have all kinds of energy and need something to keep myself busy. I purchased a Big 5 metal detector at the swap meet for $110.00. It sells new for $139.00. I think it's a great metal detector. It's light weight, detects up to 8 inches deep. I love the way the different tones tell you what the target might be, so when you get used to your machine, you don't have to look at the display pannel to see what your machine found, just look to see how deep. One thing I find myself doing is. while driving around town, or anywhere, I always keep an eye out for spots to metal detect. Another thing, I go on line, and type in "showmystreet". That sight will tell you to type in my address, or some other place I want to hunt, and you will get a birds eye view of anywhere. I then print where I will be metal detecting, and keep a close record of where I have detected at that spot. My mo is to print a copy of say a park I want to detect from my computer. I then go to that park, and it might take me 40 hours to cover every inch of the park. Every day I color in the area I have detected at the park. That way I don't forget if I have done a section or not. Also, "Metal Detecting Forum" has taught me a lot about this sport. I have found MDing is a lot like fishing. You never know what you might get when you throw out your fishing line, and you never know what you might find when your swinning your MD. If you find that your not doing to well finding stuff, stick with it and you will come around. Oh yeah, if when your driving around, and you see people, and if theres grass, there will be money too. The best place to MD is Elementry and Middle schools. Kids are always loosing money, and silver jewlery too. So next Saturday, or Sunday monring, and not during the week, go to your neighborhood school and start out front of the school and hit the grassy areas and you will find money. Just make sure you put the grass back the way you found it before you leave a hole.
Good luck

Thank you for this info...this forum is my sole source of detecting lessons as I don't really have much of a social network IRL, let alone anyone into detecting that I can pester with my newb questions.

Fresh meat = me

Hi All,

I'm the freshist on here from Southern Ohio. Travel all over Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia. (Sometimes in Pennsylvania, too.) Just picked up a new detector from Kellyco and ransacked my back yard. (Garrette AT PRO)

Moved on from there to the local fairgrounds where I averaged about 10 coins recovered/hour. (With permission from the grounds keeper, of course) Found an interesting token from IBM first time out there. It says "Suggestion Plan" with an arrow starting from 1990 - 2000. Figured some employee must have dropped it while on a ride. Can't wait to completely cover the entire grounds. I was told there were about 15 other detectorists out there that frequented the grounds, but apparently they hadn't checked the spots I covered.

At any rate, I get permission from managers and owners, use a form I developed and look forward to many successful hunts.

Thanks

That halo effect and digging all pull tabs are great tips, thank you!

Good information. If people read their manuals, they'll find an abbreviated version of the code of conduct, but I did like your expanded version and your ORIGINAL graphic showing the proper way to cover an area. I've already found strange things in my yard, like an old limestone rock with heavy wire around it, probably used to secure a fence, and a few coins. Now to search Dad's place to locate all the money I lost outside as a kid. I want those mercury dimes, Buffalo nickles, and Indian Head pennies back. Then to go over my long gone country grade school -- two rooms, a very small gym, and a kitchen. My dad and grandmother also went to school there. Happy hunting, guys.

I also have a mile of Santa Fe trail ruts to sweep on my farm. The Plum Buttes Massacre occurred on the east end. That part had been farmed for awhile, and several interesting things were found after plowing and disking. A few people over the years used metal detectors on the massacre area, but mainly found old bullets and round balls. I did use my detector on a small area. The kids gave my wife and I a silhouette of a freight wagon and oxen, and one of the boys lost my nut driver; dropped it in the snow. Luckily, I had a spare. It was too cold to detect that day.:D

Very helpful to this new to detecting person. Thank you. Overtime in certain subjects, some things might be repeated, and it's okay if it's written up as the person's 'ORIGINAL'. ...........why say anything if it doesn't add to the 'helps'. just sayinnnnn' haha

Think of "June"

Great information, one thing I would add is slooooooow down. Back in the early 80's my dad and I went on a three day club outing at Myrtle Beach bunch of guy and 1 little lady "June". Day 1 all us guy's had a hand full of coins and things. June had 2 hands full, pocket full, bag full. Half way through day 2 my dad calls me over and told me to watch June, well she was walking at a snail's pace. We were walking slow but not that slow. We slowed down and there it was we doubled we had done on day one and did the same on day 3. From that day forward when I am out MDing walking along I Think of June and sloooooow down you'll be surprised what you might miss.
