found a bottle dump

Some really nice bottles, Ive got a JA Harris bottle in my collection, I like the apothecary bottles from around here. Looks like youve got a great site to hunt, congrats.

A very nice collection..
May I ask what method you used to clean them??
I have a collection I need to clean up..
Thanks..
Sonny

I am in shock. This is awesome. I can't believe how the earth could preserve such things without breaking them. Can I ask how does one even start to figure out how to find a bottle dump in their area?

sonny,
good way to clean them is with a bottle brush and water with a little bit of dishsoap. If that doesn't work, Barkeeper's Friend and bottle brush and water. If that doesn't work, a few bb's, barkeepers friend, shake well and serve.

great site for info. The part about using steel wool on the exterior works very well. It also works well on ACL sodas. Just need to use 0000 wool and very light strokes.

Thanks, appreciate the tips.

Yes the rifleman collar disc is of post 1902 vintage, so WW1 rather than WW2. The brass? object with the US flag on it reminds me of bell?

Kind Regards,
Simon.

To find dumps I just ask people. Usually if you can find an ol' timer and get a conversation going they're full of info on how the area used to look. The library local history area usually has maps/pics of the area through the years. Just google the area you want to dig. Talk to people at construction companies.

I almost cried last summer when I was talking with the maintenance guy at the turn of the century school (now senior apartments) that I do all of the IT work for. we were talking about a local house that had been leveled and he said if he'd known that I collected bottles he would have loaded his pickup bed for me and made trips to bring them.
The guys digging up the foundation and stuff found hundreds and hundreds of bottles and just trashed them all..... That area is from the 1800's and was in the area of bottlers and saloons...

:wow::wow::shock::shock: I'd LOVE one of those coke bottles!!! You aren't selling are you? :D

sorry have been busy not online as much.......:( but when i get the chance i will post more pics of the cokes, the one has a chip in the lip of the bottle but other wise its nice.... we had not really thought about selling them but if any one is interested sure we will:D HH

I love digging in old dumps for bottles It looks like the bottles Your digging are coming out in great condition. A lot of the old bottles I have are from construction excavation in NYC. I was on a job a few years ago where they were digging down at least 25' and every scoop of the excavator had old bottles in it. I researched the sight and it turned out to be an old turn of the century ash dump for NYC. I was finding milk bottles, beer bottles, a poison bottle and even the early clay type jugs. Here is a link to a quick story about the History of the dump;

holy cow..nice digs...the straight side cokes I've seen upwards of 250-300 each. The drug/med bottles are all nice and worth a nice hunk. especially to someone who collects meds from that area or certain druggist bottles in general.
btw..the cokes date from 1902-1915...very desirable...

Hundreds of dollars? The earlier ones could be worth four figures, right?

I saw one in a book with Birmingham on the side and it was saying it was worth $2k. Maybe before the economy tanked?

Coke started in the deep south, Atlanta, so there are probably some great bottles to be found here.

if you want to sell any of the druggist bottles, send me a PM
