For What It's Worth - My Two Bits On The Manticore And Results To Date

Sounds 100% like I have experienced with my new 900. pennies have been somewhat confusing Nickels when using my at pro I almost never found nickels. I dug 25 nickels today all were 25-26 on the 900 very consistent . Quarters are 88-89 and dimes are 81-83. silver Rosies are 83-84 . Foil is in the 40's . everything that's rung up in the 90's for me has been a deep crushed can. I dug 8.71 in clad today and by the end of the day my confidence in my machine is much improved . I really was on the fence and wanted a Manticore but since finding one is nearly impossible and I liked the idea of having 2 coils and saving 500$ so I went with the 900. It's interesting to me how the 2 machines seem to be consistent with each other especially the nails. They are an issue.
Agree Magic, I thought the 800 pounded the nickels but the 900 really clobbers them. For me a 26-27 is a no brainer nickel signal but have had them drop as low as 23 and as high as 30. I have dug 2 war nickels so far with the 900, one was a 27-28 and the other was one of those wonky war nickel signals coming in high at 60-62. I find alot of the coins I dig come up in the 90s with the junk topping off at the top with 98-99. Good to see you're happy with the 900, I like mine as well. I may pick up a Manticore in the future but for now content with the 900, its finding coins on sites I have been over pretty well with the 800. Good luck. Mark

I dug a men’s wedding band the other day with my Manticore that was in a heavily infested nail patch. It was about 6” deep and it hit at 90-91 one direction, 88-89 the other direction. I was hoping for silver, but it’s presumably a copper ring that has 18k stamped on the inside.
I’ve had the Manticore for a few weeks now but have only really been able to log about 10 hours on it.
The iron falsing is a real thing, but I’m already learning when it’s iron and when it’s a conductive target. The 2d screen is a very useful tool. I was a little frustrated my first time or two out with it, but after pulling that ring in a DIFFICULT area, I’m starting to come around.
Minelab REALLY needs to get the smaller coil out, as the 11 is really too large and powerful for iron patches.

Thanks for the feedback Mark. Interesting that there is such a difference in your reported VDI numbers and the ones I see. I thought from what others reported they would be closely parallel. Good luck.

Matt, I agree with your comments about the iron falling. I dig way too many nails that produce pure signals in the 80's. Hope you get more hours on the machine. Good luck on your future hunts.

Matt saw a video yesterday, Minelab is aware of the iron falseing and supposedly working on an update to correct it. I hope there will be an update for the 900 as well. Seems much more falseing on the 900 as opposed to the 800. Also they are aware of the wind noise with the headphones. Good luck. Mark

Yes I watched that video as well, and found it encouraging that Minelab is listening to user feedback.
When I say falsing, it should also be noted that every machine out there will false on nails, so it’s not something that’s new. In all honesty, I’ve only truly been fooled a couple of times digging what I thought was a good conductive target only to recover a square nail, it’s just going to take some time to dial the Manticore in. I think these comparisons to the D2 are a little premature as folks have a thousand plus hours swinging and tweaking them, Manti just recently arriving. I have at least a thousand hours on the 800 and if I was given a chance to have a one day hunt in a killer area, I would probably take it as opposed to the Manticore simply based on my comfortability with it. However, IMO once I’ve had the seat time with the Manticore, I think it will blow the 800 out of the water in iron patches.

"Unfortunately, I have continued to dig a significant number of rusty nails. Maybe there is a tweak that will ultimately allow me to ignore these things, but as of yet I haven’t figured it out. The VDI still shows a fairly discrete object on the non-ferrous line, albeit with a smudge from the upper ferrous range. However, a coin being masked by a nail can also look like this."

That is iron wrap around. The iron object is usually deep by itself. Circle the target in all metal and see if you get any iron audio. Rarely you wont but it has happened a few time to me.

A coin masked by iron does not look like that on the M-Core. You will see evidence of iron upper or lower ferrous limits and usually iron grunt.

If you are getting excessive falsing with the M core reduce the gain. People keep calling for a "tweak or up date" put a bunch more hours on the machine first.
