Fill your beach holes ? I don't !

Sometimes I .. .do NOT fill the holes

Answer: Jail time and fines up to $15k for each offense.
If it endangers a species protected under Federal Endagered Species Act of 1973, you are liable for your holes. In Florida, I've witnessed the FWC instruct a guy to fill in the mote on his sand castle or they would write him a citation. He didn't realize there were sea turtle nests about 20 feet behind his sand art.

Now you know....don't be DB :cool3:

I have hunted with a pulse for many years but now hunt with s discriminating detector... if and when someone breaks an ankle in a hole we will get blamed for it... but hunt in PP mode and yes I dig suspect targets that many pass by...

You think because you take out trash you don't have to finish the job? That is just being lazy...

You are wrong here.. nothing you say will change my opinion..

I saw a guy years ago hunting like you and I told him he should be filling his holes.. he told me to blank off... so I found a park ranger and told him what he was doing and they kicked him out.. I was thanked by them and then I gave him a big smile as they escorted him out of the park.

*Politely claps in approval*

I spent last week at the beach and I noticed the hottest toy on the beach were mini shovels. The kids were digging huge holes. I saw some that were 4 ft deep and 6 ft across. Even staring at these numerous canyons I filled every hole because I have common sense. And yes I smell what the troll is cooking!!!

You're more likely to trip on the small hole than the crater left by some kids. You can see the crater a long ways off!

Not only do I not fill my holes, I strategically place Punji sticks inside them and cover with palm leaves in the hopes some other pirate will fall and get impaled. Then i steal their finds pouch and detector. #winning I almost got Craig once but he must've sensed something was up by my insidious giggle and went the other way.

One kid had a big fox hole dug and it started to fill with water. So he started digging a trench about 30 ft long towards the waters edge to drain it. The kid was sweating, digging and throwing sand. I couldn't help but laugh out how industrious the whole thing was.

Except that ground water doesn't drain. LOL!

Now you’re trolling! Nice work.

Well..not exactly. If only it is extremely crowded with people will I fill my sand holes. But as of late , I don't really hunt during those times anymore. Sometimes I get requests to NOT fill the holes so kids can play in them !

I am an old time beach hunter. Some other hunters have been very confrontational about me not filling my holes. Here's my logic : I hunt with a pi. I pretty much dig up everything and pride myself on bagging my trash. Particularly fish hooks , razor blades , screws , needles, etc. Many of these are just a few inches under the sand. Others are worried about public perception, it being outlawed , bad for the hobby, etc. I don't care. I will show curious
onlookers my trash and am commended for it.

These same hunters are with a NOX or other discriminating detector that will I.D a target , know what it is , and NOT dig it. Leaving it hidden under the sand for someone to possibly step on. If you are that concerned with my holes ( that will fill on the incoming tide ) then you you should be digging all your trash. Otherwise go pound sand ! Do you see the irony ? At times, I can dig 300-500 targets. I hunt the slope and wet sand , covering a large area. Time is the enemy. There are many hazards on the beach and you use it at your own risk.

So...Are you 1 of those beach hunters that always fill your holes and DON'T dig and remove all your trash ? Guys with a discriminating detector are only lying to themselves if they dig and keep everything ! Otherwise , why discriminate ? What do you do ? Just curious....

I'm a PI hunter and take all the trash, every bit of it, and fill all my holes.
What's your problem? You can't take 2 seconds and kick some sand in your hole? Do the math. We've all had days where we dig 500 targets. Two seconds to kick some sand in the hole times 500 holes = 16+/- minutes.

We had a jogger last year, locally, that broke her ankle in a patch of detectorists holes. She was running early evening in the dark. Unfortunately I know the person who left those holes, an old beach hunter like you....who never fills his holes!

Forget about what type of machine you're using or how there's not enough time in the day....just fill your holes. It's the right thing to do for safety of others and for the rest of us to be able to continue hunting our beaches...

:good:
I Use a Discriminating machine but dig 98% of all targets and dump all my trash, i fill in my holes and remove trash because its harmful to others, Plain and simple :cool3: if you can pull the treasure out then you can also remove the trash ;) its a yin and yang thing happening there, The ocean gives you some treasure as long as you do her a solid and remove some trash is how i see it, and as for the holes :wow: Man its a public place that others use day and night, so yes someone will fall in your hole and hurt them self 100% no matter if there mother told them to pay attention or not YOUR HOLE LED THEM TO HAVING A BAD TIME AND GETTING HURT AT THE BEACH  I am the type that will always say something and if i see others on the beach doing so i give them the benefit of the doubt and offer my advice on how to better conduct your self as a member of this hobby, if that doesn't work well most have seen i can really be a pain in your butt if ya dont want to follow the rules lol

And before anyone chimes in on the other 2% , well these are the weak tiny foil signals or straight out nulls for iron that get passed but even then most of the time i dig em to remove them and not have to find them again later .

:agreed:

Which scenario is more likely?

1. Walking down the beach the other day, I noticed a metal detectorist. Cool! As I was reflecting, I broke my ankle in a hole that detectorist had dug and failed to fill in. The nerve of that detectorist for not filling in his holes! He should fill all his holes, because he's creating a hazard by leaving them open.

2. Walking down the beach the other day, I noticed a metal detectorist. Cool! As I was reflecting, I stepped on a fish hook and cut my foot. The nerve of that detectorist for not picking up someone else's trash! He should be responsible for clearing out every piece of debris on this beach.

Walking down the beach the other day, I noticed Bo Derek running towards me in slow motion!...as she got close, she tripped in a hole a Metal Detectorist dug and I caught her as she fell and we tumbled around in the waves together! Thank You Metal Detectorist!

This is a good one !
Scenario #1 : Gee , I was just too spaced out and was not paying attention to where I was walking. Damn , I deserved that one. Thank goodness I wasn't crossing a busy street, I'm glad to be alive !

Scenario # 2: I just watched that guy detecting. He stopped over something for a minute looking at his screen. Why didn't he dig it up ? I walked over that spot shortly afterward and cut my foot on a razor blade of all things ! I said ,why not dig that up ? He says , I don't dig trash !!! Wow..

Ok MUD - you win ! Bo Derek.... that's the best one yet...lol...

Ok so the fact you think Scenario # 2 actually happens  leads me to believe your not a old school hunter   anyone whos been hunting long enough knows that everyone on the beach only sees you and thinks and asks "whats the best thing you've ever found" we have all heard that about a 100 times a day doing this, not once have i EVER heard someone ask me why did you look down at your screen and then choose not to dig ? Then say "i went there and decide to just dig a random hole to see what you left and low and behold it was a Hypodermic needle full of herpagonorasyphilaids and its your fault ? Whats wrong with you man :?: What is your malfunction :?: its not a detectorest fault if a harmful object in the sand harms you  ,,, Nothing like razor blades are placed in the sand to begin with, ever see what the beach does to beach glass ? How long do you think a razor blade is going to last in the sand in the 1st place :?: .

All it takes is one VIP falling in a MDer's hole to get MDing outlawed in an entire state - that's how it works now-a-days in state politics (and city politics), so please fill your holes and tell others to fill their holes. All it takes is one incident to affect the entire hobby.

In my home town, one night a metal detectorist dug-up a city park AND DIDN'T FILL THEIR HOLES and now MDing is outlawed in all city parks! Special thanks to that Ash hole who didn't fill in their holes.

Beach glass can last for decades. Ever see smooth blue glass before ? Crusty razorblades can last for years. Ever dig one ? No, it's obvious you haven't, otherwise you wouldn't ask that question. It is your fault if you knowingly I.D a needle , don't dig it and somebody gets hurt. No different than an open hole. Nobody's expecting you to clean the beach of all trash. Just sharp stuff UNDER YOUR COIL that you could remove. So , if you can't see the reasoning behind that, you are mistaken ! Maybe it's time to put down the pipe. PERIOD END OF STORY.

Time and time again, many have pointed out how this is not a fair comparison, nor is it true. You are sticking to your guns. We get it. Hopefully, this can be the END OF STORY.

I've played around a little with you. I'm done.

Completely understand your point of view. I swear under my breath everytime I see someone doing it.. but the arguement is nulled.. as you can pick up a ctx or eq and hint the same way
