Ever wonder whether those were really found yesterday, or found at all?

I hope everybody on this forum realizes how great it REALLY is! Thank you graciously Carol (and hubby) for making it available to us all.

[rant]
I gotta' say, I just now got off a different (and very popular) forum that I visit as well (but becoming more and more seldom over time) where I know within a gnats that pure bull abound! It's just beyond me why people can act that way, and way beyond me that they think they're actually pulling the wool over other people's eyes.

And nope, I haven't been shunned from it, or created any ruckus there what-so-ever. What forum I won't say, but if you read 'em you likely know exactly which one I'm talking about. Not only the above rant, but some SERIOUSLY insecure members as well - bordering on comical how easily some members get their undies in a bundle! And talk about the moral majority being severely opinionated?! :wow: Carol, whatever you do, please don't ever start a section here that allows folks to speak their mind on ANY particular subject they desire, otherwise stinking trash talk will most certainly dominate the "New Posts" link, thus making finding any "friendly" or informative posts literally impossible to find.
[/rant]

This is one fabulous forum - thank you ALL for making and keeping it that way!

Tom,

Rest assured that the admins and mods intend to keep this forum a friendly place. ;)

Unfriendly people don't last long here, either through peer pressure or more proactive means.

I would like to add how much I really like the "no politics" policy on the board! Especially this time of year when it's hard to get away from non stop politics. It's nice to be able to go to a forum and not have to see it or think about it!

I've been here a year now. LOL

Out here in the southwest - land of no rain - we do sometimes dig up coins that need no cleaning. The soil is extremely dry most of the time. I have dug many Mercs & such but someone posted about older coins than them. I dug this 1879 dollar next to an old school house in a long gone mining camp. I only ran some water over it, no cleaning to speak of. Steve in so az

Nice shape--it still has the natural aged look.

I have to agree with how nice it is here and I hope it stays that way.

I enjoy seeing what other people find and what they think about this hobby. While people will disagree about aspects of the hobby, I don't see people bashing each other over it.

As for posting false finds, I guess I don't really care, if someone thinks they need to do that then they have a problem not me.

I'm sure there are people out there who do post things they didn't find but there are those people everywhere. We dirt fish and with fishing you get fish stories. Ice

LOL!

I'm new here. And new to Metal Detecting. But what's funny is this: I'm new to lots of stuff and it seems like every "genre" or "thing" that I get into has what some people call "posers" or "wannabees."

Native Americans deal with wanabees all the time. So do Special Operations personnel. So do Cowboys and all kinds of other "fields of endeavor." I guess it makes sense that Metal Detecting should not be exempt.

The BTDT (been there, done that), Real Deal types always devote some portion of their day dealing with it, or at least talking about it. Often, they get into speculation regarding the psychology of the poser/wannabee. After all, why would someone pretend to be something they are not, or pretend to have done something they have not done? Who knows.

I just throw this out there because of all things, this is the *LAST* place or thing where I thought it would take place. But you know what? Why not? I mean, Metal Detectorists (if that is a word) are people too, and their is bound to be some few who need to fill a need that most don't understand. :?:

Sorry for the digression. I just thought it was interest to find the phenomenum (sp?) here. :spin:

I posted on this forum soon after it started that of six thousand finds I had sold a very large percentage had reappeared and been posted up as recent finds which I didn't mind to much if at least they left a decent amount of time between buying from me and posting. People would wait a year or two, now they only wait a couple of months.

The majority of my worn finds go uncleaned to a couple of dealers. They insist on uncleaned as they are required for salting Rally sites and detecting holiday sites. Its one of the reasons I very, very rarely go to any rallies anymore, though its always interesting to see the " Having only dug 20 Roman coins in the first hour I decided to move on to a more productive site" types at the dealers stalls buying low grade Roman coins.

The only worse thing in my view is the misleading poster who doesn't say but hints that things are valuable when they are not. Thus you get the impression in the U.S. that very old coins are worth money. The majority are worth little as condition and rarity of minting comes first. At the moment we have dropped back to three full time treasure hunters in the U.K. and one is going back to work in a few weeks. We have a couple of other "experts" but for some reason they need the support of State benefits so are not really doing to well.

As for finds made with specific detectors thats the most abused of all. People find with one machine but claim to have made the find with another because some manufacturers give you top of range machines and others give little or nothing.

It could've been a recent drop, strange as it seems. If UK Pennies are bronze, like most of ours, they're going to corrode over time in a wet environment, even if that corrosion is just a change in color.

Obviously the environment is all important. Many items found in the thick
River Thames mud, come out looking like new, the reason being is the lack
of oxygen in the mud.

Vindolanda on Hadrians Wall is another example. They have made (and are
still making) fantastic finds in their excavations, the best being the
"Vindolanda Tablets. These are thin wooden postcard sized tablets, which
after treatment, they can still read what was written on them, nearly 2000
yrs ago.

Im sure ther is plenty of BS here. Not as much as other places, but plenty still. I had one person tell me they had gold nuggets and just through them back in a hole. Do you think anyone in thier right mind would have done this? No I dont think so! Just like someone was digging in a grave yard, but claims they didnt. Funny how recorded plate numbers can prove someone a liar. My point is there are liars every where, on every forum. I have a hard time beleiving that a new person to the hobbie finds 7 gold rings in one day, with a crappy detector. Every one knows after a few weeks the posters who are full of sh*%! But out of kindness we stand by and watch them make fools of them self for we know they will disappear when folks quit reading thier post.

The age old question!!!!! I am in 4 different clubs that give prizes for different catorgies, in each and every club this question comes up constantly. I am a trusting person so I always believe that people are good and trusting. If there are people out there not being truthful they are the ones that have to live with themselves and not me. I would hope that this does not happen but who knows. Until someone proves me wrong I will continue to believe that people are showing truthfully.

Matt my father Finally bought himself a detector and went on to his local beach and found five rings (two gold) and a rather large gold bar.

Within a year he had given up detecting for good because he never matched that first day. "Normal" detecting wasn't exciting enough.

In the main I do agree with your post.

I can totally relate to your father becoming bored with the hobby after my own best finds in the early going. Then when I posted them on a metal detecting site and having them removed because I was a newbie.
