So we're off to our annual trip to Wrightsville Beach next week. I have the manticore (and the 800 and 900, but only bringing the 900 and manticore)

For the manitcore I'm planning on buying the M8 coil, but debating whether to do that before the beach trip or after...which coil would you suggest for the beach, and why? I'm more than happy to bring both coils, but would like to focus on only one while I'm there.

Any suggestions?

There we go, not sure what happened couldn't reply. I have not used the 8" coil but have been reading about many having great success. I would maybe start with the 11" and maybe switch 1/2 way through to the 8" and see what benefits you see. Who am I kidding, most likely I would stay with the 11" all day cause it works for me. :)

:) That's my problem too...I'd bring both and stick with the 11" because that's what's on the machine and I wouldn't want to waste detecting time swapping coils (the Manticore is a PAIN to swap coils...)

Maybe I should get a bottom shaft for it...that would make swapping easier.

Why a small coil for a beach? I'm thinking my 11" coil is too small.

Been reading it hits harder and really finds the smaller gold. Specifically chains which I love to find. I don't have any practical experience with the mini, but watching guys have great success with the small coil.

It's lighter, and from what I've read has better separation. I could be mistaken though

I love finding chains...they're so hard to find, especially in dirt.

When there's alot of rocks exposed a smaller coil might be of benefit, usually that happens in the winter around here. It's actually pretty crazy to see the stuff that shows up when the beach erodes after winter storms. Good luck on your trip!

I normally don’t take the 15 inch coil off my manticore when i beach hunt. I put the m8 on the other day and am really impressed with it. The separation is really good, if where you are going to hunt is trashy I would use the m8. While I like having the larger coverage area on the beach if there is a lot of trash it’s easy to miss a signal due to so many targets under the coil at one time. I’m running recovery speed 4 and sensitivity at 22/23 depending on conditions and the small coil hits targets deeper than you would think possible.

I ended up ordering both the M8 and M9....M8 will be here today...M9 on Wednesday....so I'll be able to test all three coils in theory. The M9 supposedly is easier in the water. I enjoy water hunting, but hate swinging the coil in water...very difficult for me. So we'll see

It is easier in the water. Minelab should actually redo the M11 coil and make it the same way as the M9 housing. Then issue a worldwide recall on the original coil. No idea who designed that coil housing? But hopefully they never work in designing coil housings again. In the dry sand it collects as much sand as a tennis racket. And has about as much drag in the water as the old whites super 12" with a coil stabilizer on it.

Thanks....Is the M9 that much easier in the water than the M8? I ended up buying both of them (I figure it's easier to ask forgiveness of the wife than permission :) )

I have not tried the M8. But would guess the design still has a lot more drag in water than the M9. I had plans to possibly run the M9 without a coil cover to make it even easier. Haven't had to. The stock M11 I was thinking about doing the mod to the coil to lighten it up. But just can't bring myself to cut the coil up. Maybe you can do a review of the two coils? I know for whatever reason the M9 coil likes finding gold chains where I hunt. Just got another micro one.

I'm planning on using all three when I'm there. I wish it were easier to change the coils on the Manticore. At least on mine it's REALLY hard to put the coil onto the shaft. Well, the M11 was tough. I almost bought 2 more lower shafts, but thankfully those wouldn't have gotten here in time for our trip.

I'll give my impressions on the coils in the water (I don't water hunt often, but I do enjoy it).

I'm glad to hear that the M9 likes gold chains :) I love finding those, but they're awfully rare. Part of it is that I notch out 1-7 for dirt hunting because I hate digging foil, but in the sand I dig just about everything.

Changing coils is a pain. Need to get a lower shaft spare as well myself.
