It could be a bullet casing or it might be a solid brass shotgun shell, in which case it is probably pretty old. Those were the predecessor of the paper shotgun shell which took over around the 1870s.
Could be a 50-70. Used by US Army 1866 till 1873. Then continued civilian use. Out west popular round for buffalo hunters. Can't guarnetee without exact measurments but has look of a 50-70
