Wasn't able to get out until 7 pm last night due to my daughters travel softball games and the normal yard work that needs done. Honestly, I just wanted to get out for a few hours to relax. Decided to hit my kids old elementary school that I hit pretty hard 2 years ago. I was not expecting much, especially with Covid and most to the kids having to be online most of the year. Anyway, I decided to wander (no griding) around. Soon after I started I found a few old hot wheels and a junk ring. I made my way to behind the baseball field's back stop (it butts up next to the play ground w/ about a 10 foot aisle way in between). I get a 38-39 signal, its loud and I think smashed can or other chunk of metal. I raised the coil expecting it to still slam hard but it disappears, I then hit it 90 degrees and same thing 38-39. At this point I'm still certain its junk but dig anyway. I flipped the plug, pinpointed the hole and nothing, so I pinpoint the plug its in it. As I circled the plug a little dirt comes off and all I see is the edge, still thinking its smashed metal I pull it it of its slot and see its a silver Eagle! Total surprise. I set it on the plug and snapped a pic and started to think I got something to post! lol. I continue to wander and then decided to hit the area behind the basketball hoops (3). I found a dog tag from a Marine (no pic as I want to give it back to him) and then I get a 14-15 all directions, normally junk for me but think "what the heck". I flip the plug and see a small chain. I then carefully reveal the cross. After closer examination, i notice its baseball bats. No marks on it so I am assuming its plated at best. I will check it to be sure. Ended up leaving at 9:30. I can only assume some kid brought the Eagle to to show their buddies and lost it. Thanks for looking and HH.

Wow 👏!! I looked at the pictures before I read the description. Thought I was looking at a Walker Half and a guy with small hands. Silver Eagle! Really nice find there!

Great story telling, very exciting.

What is the syory behind 1989 silver coins?

That's a Silver Eagle one full ounce of silver. The mint puts them out and are legal tender but almost exclusively bought for their metal content and collector value. Beautiful. VERY rare find for a metal detectorist. They have been minted since the mid 1980s, I believe.

I believe they started minting them in 1986, I also think that this year the design is changing. I can only attribute it being there to a kid bringing it in to show it off.

Thanks SW, I as well was surprised to see what it was.

Nice. And I like the fresh-reveal shot.

Thanks Tom

Thanks cellrdwellr, I feel old too, also graduated in 88, kids!

Chuck that is an amazing find, I wonder how long it took the kid to tell his/her parents they lost it?

Whoa! Nice find! Yep. I would think that's the case with them finding and losing it. Another alternative, if you have a field there that is used for sporting events, is that it was used as a Ref's flip-coin. I've found lots of flip-coins over the years, including one Morgan.

Congrats on the Walker, yet to dig one of those bad boys... girls(?)

Thanks GS, at first glance it looks like a Walker but it's a 1 oz. Silver Eagle, 1989.

Thanks Skippy, you could be right, I had not thought about that. I year back I did find an officials coin at a soccer filed, it had the leagues initials and a heads / tails side clearly marked. I have learned from your posts that Elementary schools have much potential. Found many rings there, no gold for me yet but many silver and costume ones. Persistence... lol

Yep! If you're finding silver rings, gold is gonna be there.
