I dug this up at an Arizona mining ghost town (active 1890+/- for 10 years). Non magnetic, no markings. Any guesses on material(s)? Is it likely home made or manufactured? So far I have only cleaned it with soap & water & toothbrush. Thanks!

I cleaned it with vinegar/salt solution and still see no markings. BUT I am pretty sure it's a shoe buckle- a bit too "fancy" to be a tack buckle imho. Still wondering about the material. The black seems to me to be a plating, any rustic shoe buckle experts out there?

Just for thoroughness, this buckle reads a clean 45 on my Manticore, so I was expecting a coin. But, I am quite happy to have an artifact. I just hope I can learn more about it. Non magnetic, non tarnished. Under microscope, it looks like there are tiny golden crystals in several spots, which I suspect are pyrite. Can't photograph that, sorry.

Where abouts In Arizona?? I grew up around vulture mine. I wasn't into metal detection back then but I was out there every night night driving for snakes.

Very cool buckle :wow:

I've been 'through' Superior many a time on my way to Miami, Globe and eventually Duncan. Miss the area, so beautiful, though different for sure.
