My friend Wayne (Nox 600 on this trip) and I (AT Pro) headed up to Missoula this afternoon and got in about 5 hours of detecting, and did well. We started out in a 1930s-50s area and my second coin was a Queen Elizabeth Canadian silver dime, a good start. The first yard had a few wheat cents for both of us, the silver for me, and some modern stuff. We got the OK at 4 more homes, I pulled my 2nd Silver, a Merc Dime, and Wayne got on the board with a Silver Rosie. A Sterling ring was found in another yard, along with a really cool brass "4" house number, a few wheats and more modern stuff. Being a hot day, we took a break for ice cream, and then headed to a different neighborhood, older, and glad we did! I was able to get us the OK at a couple of houses, the first one had a small front yard which I did by myself, and I was able to pull a really nice 1890 Indian Head Cent. We both checked the adjacent curb strips but found nothing. The last permission was really good... I started out my side of the yard by pulling a fairly large copper coin, all I could see was a sailing ship and the bust of some old king wearing a laurel wreath - stuffed that in my pocket and kept hunting. Near the home I pulled out a Merc Dime, and Wayne got another Silver Rosie. The best part of the day of hunting was when Wayne got a nickel signal on the Nox that covered a fairly large area. Well... turned out to be a SIX COIN BUFFALO NICKEL spill... and ALL dated 1913! One was a 1913-S the others were Philly mint. I came over to watch as he pulled the first one, and I checked the hole with his pinpointer and it kept sounding off, amazing find, and really neat to see that in person! When I got home I pulled that larger copper coin out, and worked it over with a toothpick... was delighted to see it was something I would have never expected to find in Montana... an 1815 HALF PENNY TOKEN / PAYABLE B. JOHN ALEX BARRY / HALIFAX. My 2nd oldest coin/token found in 7 years of detecting! Thank you for your interest!

Awesome finds as always.
I was hoping to head your way this week but witl temps to 100, looks like I will have to wait another week. Heat this summer has cut into my detecting time

Nice bunch of goodies.
Thank you metaladdict!

Thank you Josh! Yep... still a bit hot here, am kind of "selective" in getting out to detect. Let me know and we can meet up for a bit of hunting!

Sweet finds, love the old coins. Quick question, how deep are those coins buried on average?

Thank you Mark! Western Montana has a semi-arid climate, so there is not a huge amount of organic buildup in the yards that I detect. An undisturbed yard will have the coins pretty much no deeper than 5-6 inches. Where detecting becomes difficult here is if the grass turf has been replaced or new soil brought into a yard. When I start finding copper memorial cents at 6" then I know there will be problems. Also the replacement soil is different than the native soil, and sometimes I can tell by looking at the type of grass that it is replacement turf and not original. But yes, an original yard has the coins not ending up too deep to detect.

Six buffs in one hole? Sick! The half-penny and the IHP are the King and Queen of the show though. Just love how your ground treated that IHP, congrats!

WOW! What an amazing hunt! :wow::shock:

That "herd" of Buffalos was icing on the cake! :D
Thank you Ron! Yep... I was glad I got to witness the herd of Buffaloes coming out of the ground, I won't forget that!

Thank you Silverhorse! And the Buffs were all 1913, first year of issue! And yep, that IHP came out amazingly well, one of the best I've ever found!

No doubt a successful outing for you both David. Congrats on all your finds, I love the old Token but your buddy's Buffalo spill made the highlight reel for me. Trapper

Thank you Trapper! Yep... as soon as my friend pulled that first Buff, I set my detector down and wandered over to his side of the front yard, asked to use his garrett carrot and we both worked at getting the next five Buffs, fun for sure!
Very interesting coin find for Montana. And great pix !!
Thank you Tom! Yes, I wonder how that 1815 Half Penny ended up in the front yard of a ca 1915 home in Missoula. Based on the green patina it had been in the ground quite some time. Would love to know the back story!
