Hello everyone and thanks for looking at my question. I will use a detector to identify small dumps or trash under perhaps a foot and a half of dirt, with or without rocks. My friend and I have started bottle hunting again, and since we are now older, "more serious" type people who prefer not to dig blindly every three feet, we thought a detector might help us. I picked one up at the local Wal Mart, tested it, and learned in more detail what we needed and didn't need. We need a detector that will help us distinguish between naturally occurring mounds and ruts, and those that are man made due to junk underneath. We check areas seen up to 100 yards or more from old foundations in fields or woods. Near the trash we hope to find our bottles. The detector we already purchased seems only to identify metal 6 inches or so down, even though it says in the literature it detects up to two feet. We tested it, and although we didn't test it on a buried Sherman Tank, it only tested 6 inches. We need to go deeper. However, we do not want to dig 4 foot pits for nothing, so we'd be happy with a detector that only detects iron 2 feet under, if it did so reliably and easily. We did find out we need to control the noise these things make, so an ear phone jack or "speaker on-off" switch would be helpful. So would a battery size that is common and rechargeable. We don't need discrimination controls as we are only looking for iron trash. And, of course, we don't want to spend any more than needed. Can anyone offer a suggestion or two? Your reply would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tom
