A strange thing happened while detecting

so I checked the connection. Sure enough, the coil cord had somehow loosened up, so I unscrewed it a little and re-put it on. The detector immediately started singing. So I guess a loose connection was the problem all along.

Some folks who get new AT Pro machines don't get the coil connector all the way on when they take it out of the box for the first time. I recall you are a bit new to the machine also. The coil connector SEEMS to push in as far as it should and then you screw the ring as far as it will go. BUT...the connector isn't fully seated and the ring never screws down all the way. The water proofing o-ring causes the connector to seem snug before it's really all the way in. Putting a little silicone grease or a bit of saliva on the o-ring will help. Wiggle it gently as you push inward past that first feel of resistance. The ring will screw down a lot further when the connector is fully seated and won't come loose.

Glad you seem to have yours fixed. But do check that you have the connector fully seated or you may have the same issue again in the future.

Papa

good post! also, that loose connection could easily lead to having the machine leak if you happen to dunk it. definitely something to keep an eye on and double check if you're going to be water hunting.
glad to hear you got things straightened away Gabby!

Thanks for all your help you guys. I thought I'd revisit this thread to give you all an update. The same thing happened again, but turning it upside down fixed it, today it happened for the third time but turning it upside down didn't fix it, so I checked the connection. Sure enough, the coil cord had somehow loosened up, so I unscrewed it a little and re-put it on. The detector immediately started singing. So I guess a loose connection was the problem all along. Nice to know I won't have to send it to be repaired.

P.S. Found a ring (don't know if it's silver or steel?) right after fixing it.

GabbityGabby, you have discovered the ATP coil spook that has no other pleasure in life than unscrewing the cables from the control box.
I have bought and carry spare battery cases with batteries because the ATP battery case will decide it doesn't want to work, and you can't make it.
The bottom terminals of the case is connected by a tiny wire leading across the inside bottom of the case.
I think the connection of this wire is faulty on some cases and it just loses...and then regains contact.
And that darn cable spook sneaks up and loosens those connectors at the most inopportune times...such as when you're digging in the middle of a blackberry patch and surrounded by thorny plants.
I'm cautious about over tightening the coil or headphone cable out of fear of breaking the control housing....so I continually keep a close check on these cables coming loose.

If it was on and stayed on during the whole episode, and started working after you tipped it, then that makes me think it's a cable/connector issue of some kind, maybe something in where the the pins connect causing some shorting on one pin, or something loose? I think I'd try undoing the cable and give it a good looking over for anything that might be moving around in there though, then try to recreate the problem. Very odd...

I was thinking the same thing

sorry.....

(yeah, I had to do it) :D

One would have to assume that this is the end result of an extraterrestrial probing.

Sorry to bring this thread back up. But I've been having more and more problems with my Pro regarding the cord connector coming loose. It used to happen mainly after traveling in my bike trailer, but now it comes loose in the middle of hunts. It has gotten to the point that I am constantly checking the connection if I haven't gotten a signal for a while. And like OleSarge above, I am afraid to over-tighten it.

The main reason I bring this back up is because it's getting to where it's warm enough to go water hunting... and I'm worried about getting the Pro in the water when the cord has this tendency to loosen. I don't want anything bad to happen to my machine, I've never taken it in the water before. Any tips on how I can make sure it doesn't come loose in the water? Is this something defective about my machine? Or is the connector that picky?

Gabitty,You are not missing the o-ring by chance..? Also you really have to make sure it is truly set...,it really takes some persuasion...wiggle and push hard ..,wiggle and push hard...mine took several times to get it good and tight..
also where it has come loose on you several times now, you may need a little plumbers silicone grease..also you could gently snug it up with a pair of pliers (maybe put a litte tape on the tips so you don't damage the plating on the connector..) ,if you don't have gorilla strength fingers..Lol.. Good luck,Hopefully that's all it is... Keep us posted..
