A Blast from the Past???

I'm sooo jealous! A cannon ball is on my bucket list!

Looks like a British 2lb shot to me, which were mounted usually on the nose of ships. Huge congrats! That needs very little cleaning to be perfect. I would wax it once you get it totally clean to prevent any rust or oxidization.

I think you are correct and I will seal it after cleaning it up ;)

Holy !!!!!! That could of been fired from a military vessel!!! Wow outstanding historical find!! Congratz Craig!

I know the last person who touched it... I didn't know him then but its my friend Robert... 8 years ago he found a cannon ball where I was hunting but left it there and he thought someone took it but I think it rolled down the slope and up against the marsh where I recovered it... Robert has pulled dozens of musket balls and 3 ringers from this spot as well as very old gold... sucker was a blast in my headphones and I almost didn't dig it

Why did he leave a awesome find like that?

He explained to me tonight he didn't know it was a cannon ball at the time... I guess someone told him and when he went back it was gone... who knows maybe there are others there.. I know the history of this area and it wouldn't surprise me if there are multiple CB's out there.

That is a super cool find. Just think of the story behind that cannon ball.

I think I know the story because I do a lot of research to hunt these spots... the CT shore saw its fair share of RW activity and this is one of them...

thanx for posting. Good pix. And don't you LOVE the sight of the grey silver discs in your basket? It wouldn't be half as fun if they were candy-apple shiny, now would it?

As for that particular type of square tab in your pix, I believe those pre-date the later 1960s "round" tabs. So whenever I'm in a dry sand zone where that type tab is within reach, I figure that silver coins (earlier '60s losses) must also be within depth reach.

And cool cannon ball !

Those quarters were in the water as they were encrusted but I didn't find them in the water or the wet slope ;) when Sandy came through last year she pushed a lot of stuff out of the water and I have been recovering it

The cannon ball was a foot down in the muck... it was a blast but it had a nice tone so I dug it up thinking it could be a cannon ball. Finding musket balls and canister shot at this spot one would assume there are other interesting things waiting to be found...

I may keep it a while and then donate it to the town I found it in for their historical society.

I love history and spend a lot of time doing the research to find spots to hunt...

I hoped you marked "Find Cannon Ball" off your bucket list.

That in its self is a great find. It may not be gold, but its still a great find.

Love the bever tail too. It looks to be one of the first ever made before going to rounded corners. There's bound to be gold and more silver out there.

Keep digging and GL
