Yesterday it was -7 here, and not a good day for man or beast. Today however, it was a balmy +34, and with a 41 degree temperature swing in 24 hours, I knew I was getting out. I took a drive to an old park I like to visit. It's been hunted a lot, but still gives up a decent coin now and then. I just mainly wanted to get out, and this spot is partially covered with pine trees, so I knew there would be some open spots without snow, to walk around. Sun was shining, and a little breeze, but overall, a perfect day to be out in the fresh air. So, I put the Legend in Park, M1, and using a coin program. I'm still fiddling around with IF, ST, BC and Recovery settings, trying out different setups. Once I got going, I was getting some good target signals and VDI's, but the ground was frozen like concrete. I literally had to chisel my way through solid ground to find things, and for anyone who's done this with a small trowel or lesche tool, it's damn near impossible. My wrists are killing me right now, and I have a huge blister on the palm of my left hand where the tool handle was hitting up against, but no complaints...all good, because I was able to dig a handful of targets. It took me 3 hours, and I skipped over a bunch I wanted to get to, but I did manage to unearth 9 coins: a 1928, 1932 and 1939 wheat penny, which I scratched and dinged up pretty good. Those make 17 wheats for the year. I also came up with a 1943P War Nickel, which is in pretty decent shape. That make silver #5 for the year, and the third war nickel this year...I also found a 1940 Jefferson, a clad dime, clad nickel, and a couple lincolns.

So, not a huge haul for the hours spent, but it was great to get out, and I feel really good about adding another silver to the count for the year. Still psyched I can detect in February in NYS!

I share your pain, went out today lots of hits but can't past the frost. Nice finds!

Yep. Up here in Northern Michigan it is like concrete everywhere. Gonna be a while for us.

Good that you got out. Sorry it’s still frozen.
I got out today, it’s still frozen here but not so hard I couldn’t get a shovel thru.

Nice war nick and pics - like the pics of the park. 34's pretty chilly, how do you keep your fingers warm? That's pretty much my only cold weather detecting issue, my fingers get painfully cold at times.

I wear a pair of north face gloves. If it’s really cold, I put on a thin inner glove and that helps. Today, at 34, the single glove worked great. I put on the under armor too, and with that, it’s very comfortable

I don't mind the cold but once the ground is frozen more then a couple of inches I learned to wait till it thaws. I've had my share of blisters and sore wrists. You sure earned those coins!

Congrats on the war nickel and wheats FLOOD. Well earned. Persistence does pay off. Good luck. Mark

I feel your pain. Another 4" of snow yesterday. This is the longest stretch of snow on the ground I can remember. This is the 6th week in a row. Usually snow is gone in 2-3 days. Two weeks tops. I still can't pull out my Christmas decorations. Makes it so I have to drive to find open ground.

Congrats on getting out and finding a war nickel. This week in NJ it is going to be in the 50's after hitting a low around 12* last weekend.
