Yesterday it was -7 here, and not a good day for man or beast. Today however, it was a balmy +34, and with a 41 degree temperature swing in 24 hours, I knew I was getting out. I took a drive to an old park I like to visit. It's been hunted a lot, but still gives up a decent coin now and then. I just mainly wanted to get out, and this spot is partially covered with pine trees, so I knew there would be some open spots without snow, to walk around. Sun was shining, and a little breeze, but overall, a perfect day to be out in the fresh air. So, I put the Legend in Park, M1, and using a coin program. I'm still fiddling around with IF, ST, BC and Recovery settings, trying out different setups. Once I got going, I was getting some good target signals and VDI's, but the ground was frozen like concrete. I literally had to chisel my way through solid ground to find things, and for anyone who's done this with a small trowel or lesche tool, it's damn near impossible. My wrists are killing me right now, and I have a huge blister on the palm of my left hand where the tool handle was hitting up against, but no complaints...all good, because I was able to dig a handful of targets. It took me 3 hours, and I skipped over a bunch I wanted to get to, but I did manage to unearth 9 coins: a 1928, 1932 and 1939 wheat penny, which I scratched and dinged up pretty good. Those make 17 wheats for the year. I also came up with a 1943P War Nickel, which is in pretty decent shape. That make silver #5 for the year, and the third war nickel this year...I also found a 1940 Jefferson, a clad dime, clad nickel, and a couple lincolns.
So, not a huge haul for the hours spent, but it was great to get out, and I feel really good about adding another silver to the count for the year. Still psyched I can detect in February in NYS!
