3 guys, 17 inch coils, 9 silvers, 13 wheaties

Sorry guys on adding my share of the hunt so late. But I did just get home from work. My take was three Merc's including a 1916 and 5 Wheat's that also included a 1909 (also a "20" & a "23"). Not to bad a day with 2 first year coins. Hopefully I can get them cleaned and get reverse shots tomorrow. It was a great pleasure to have this opportunity to swing with Matt and Mike again and hope we can do it again real soon. Jack (Trapper)

There may be something to the big coil... I have had 3 ctx's and 2 etrac's. I have a tough separation test bed. A dime at 7 inches at the base with a big crusty nail 1.5 inches off center 2 inches above and then a pull tab at the edge of the plug at 2 inches from surface. All this in a 6 inch round plug. I did not have a large 17 coil for my ctx's all i had was stock and the 6 inch coil. I could not get my ctx to sound off on the dime with either coil, but i did get a solid ID number with the stock coil but no sound. With the etrac i could not get a solid ID number or sound with a sunray 5.5 coil, 8x6 sef, or the nel sharpshooter, but with the stock coil i could get a solid enough ID and tone that i would have dug the target. I wish i would of had a large coil to test on it to see if it was even better. I was always under the impression that the smaller coils separated better , but with FBS i think the larger DD coils may be actually better. At least with my Etrac it was. I know someone will say well the dime was too deep to begin with for the small coils,,,, but i also have a dime at 7 inches with no trash and i could get it easily with ctx or etrac and small coils in my soil. I would like to know what you guys settings were if you don't mind posting them? I have located a used ctx that is being fire sold and i may pick it up.

I ran a few different settings yesterday. I can tell you I did run a modified Tadpole program (combined mode) which caught most of my targets if that helps or if you understand. You own a Etrac so should make some sense. I modify it to my liking and soil.

Hey Trapper, loved the hunt with ya again as always. Is your 1909 a VDB? I cant even get dates off of mine even after my 3 hours of tumbling. I need to run it again today for the day to get that thick green patina off of it.

Got my coins cleaned up a bit better this morning and put them under magnification. No mint mark nor VDB on the 1909 Wheat. No mint mark at all on the 1916 Dime. But I did have some want-full dreams. Also forgot to add my marble to the pictures. Yesterdays hunt was another great memory with you two, again thank you. Jack

Oh trap still great finds ... I was sitting here on pins and needles .
Got up at 4 am but just wasn't sure about crashing the party .

Congrats on the great finds guys. I'm gonna need to break out the 17" coil more frequently.

My thought on the 17" coil(not that it means a hill of !!!!) is that ROUND and SILVER and COPPER are all things that most all detectors find appealing. The bigger the better! Even though the detection field is "diluted" some because of the sheer size of the coil,it still picks these out pretty easily. Perhaps it's not so much that it's seeing the good targets better, rather it's NOT seeing the !!!! and tiny little stuff AS WELL or AT ALL. Whatever it's doing,it's doing it damn well,I scored a 25 Merc this morning before work,9" down in roots next to something iron-ish. I was able to wiggle it out without much doubt. 50 tone has a sound on silver that is unmistakeable. It's a combination of the tone and QUALITY of the sound.
You guys did great, good to see more keepers piling up!

Great hunt and really great report about the 17" from some longtime and skilled hunters...a guy just cant argue with in field results...Nice work!
