medallion

I found this not far from an 1897 IHP. I hope someone might know, because of it’s distinct design. I can’t make out enough letters to ID it. Should I pick at it, or otherwise clean it?

Hello, can anyone help me identify this item. It appears to be a medal or medallion with a circular pattern. Asian? Nautilus? It was found at Bowers Beach in Delaware. There might be handwritten initials on the back. A magnet sticks to it so I dont think it is gold or silver.
