Anyone here hunt Carlsbad, CA beach area? Will be going there in March 2024.

No huge suggestions, but we were visiting there last week. I did not detect while there, and I did not see anyone detecting in the Carlsbad area while checking out several different beaches. The only detectorist I saw was on Coronado Beach. I didn't ask him how he was doing. Good luck!

It's on my list :P In your other thread I posted too, but I try to get to a SD/OC/LA county beach at least one day every weekend....

Probably the most mineralized sand in San Diego, bring a PI.
I hunt Carlsbad somewhat regularly and I commonly see a couple other detectorists there with me. With a few hotels right near the beach it typically draws a nice crowd from Spring Break until early Autumn with out-of-towners. Be forewarned though... it does have more than its share of extreme black sand. I love to use larger coils on the beach myself but due to all the mineralized sand I usually opt for the standard size (11" in my case) to minimize the effects of all the black sand.

Good ole CB. Used to be 1 of my glory holes when I lived nearby 15 years ago. My dad lived there in the 90s , so I know all those beaches. So does everyone else and is no longer a "secret" , so GL. Competition can be fierce. Beaches there can change rapidly from week to week. Lots of blacksand. EMI from the hotel area can be off the hook ! I recommend wearing ankle supports. It can be very deceiving as this picture shows. The sand you see is hiding a layer of rock cement 2" below ! So as soon as you put your foot on the scoop your ankle is gonna snap. 🤣. If your inexperienced and don't have the right machine , stick to the drysand. Coil size can very. You can walk a long time without a good target. Other times its all trash. CB has miles of beaches. Explore them all.

If you plan on getting the water. Don't.. The waves will DESTROY you!... It's prob a gold mine field but the waves are extremely hard hitting. Don't hunt at night. there are a lot of "interesting" people out there. good luck.

You got that right bro. I've encountered many at night. They hide under the stairwells and along the bluffs and rocks.

For those that want to see a SHOCKER : Look up Elderly man attacked on Carlsbad Beach , July 2017. Guy was metal detecting. Probably too old to swing his scoop at him.

Yes, I was there last year. Not a bad location but can be sketchy in the evenings. I would hit it early morning before the crowds hit. Watch where you park and don't leave anything in your car. I was lucky, there were several cars broken into while I was on the beach. They bust out a window and grab anything they can find. This happens frequently at Oceanside and Tori Pines.

Good to know, what about running a 6" coil in the water? I hear that's the way to go as the waves don't pull it as much.

Yes on the break ins.. I was at La Jollla in the middle of the day, front row at the main parking lot. Parked w/no one next to me with LOTS of open spots otherwise. I was hunting for about 2 hrs. I looked up at the truck and saw a car right next to it with the driver door open butted up next to it. I mistakenly assumed that it was a guy just changing but thought it odd that with so many spaces he parked right next to my truck. Again I assumed that he used my truck and a cut off for others to see him changing. About an hr later I went to the truck for a redbull. The MF was trying to jimmy my door handle open with a screw driver. I must have been to far away to hear the alarm go off. He was no where in sight. He didn't get in but it cost me a couple hundred bucks to repair..
Again in La Jolla at the north end by the college. I returned to the truck during a night hunt when it started raining hard. I laid back in my seat to nap til the rain stopped. A car pulled up behind me. Two punks got out and walked to the window w/ flashlights. They saw me and ran back to their beater of a car and chirped off. You'd think "Super nice neighborhood." Well, thieves are like moths to a flame. It dont matter when or where. They'll be there....

I had a friend of mine had a encounter with someone. He sprayed them with something like hair spray and hit one of them with his sand scoop (long handled). He said they left, but so did he after that:(

Nothing wrong with bringing a legal knife with you.. Hell, bring an illegal one. Bring some spray and don't forget you've got a hell of a shovel to beat a fool down to. But most of all keep distance and knowing that anyone at night is suspect to being a douche bag. I don't know about CA, but there are now NON lethal guns. Essentially high powered rubber pellets. Non penetrating but hurt like a MF. I've hunted nights a lot for nearly 10 yrs and never had an incident but if I had been naive and let people get to close and hadn't kept my head on a swivel and also blasting their faces with my headlamp when they approached, who knows... Drunk-ards,druggies, and wanna be bangers are highly unpredicable

What surprises me is all the local knucklehead you-tubers that show what cars they drive, the precise location of where they're hunting, the price of their equipment and all the gold they find, which they make it seem they find gold on every outing. With all the crime that's been going around lately, its just a matter of time before detectorist get targeted and robbed due to these videos..

no surprise to you and me that those MD who show their car (POS), find gold on every hunt (FAKE) and show their locations (unfortunately) almost deserve to get robbed by punks who will then find out that they don't have much if anything to give them.
