Wow, look what popped out..

Congrats on a nice find. I've hunted artifacts for over 27 years (I'm 33). Most of my life really. Finding axe heads is no common feat. Things like this are graded just like coins on the "G" scale 1-10. G7-10 are very rare and worth the bucks. Type of stone, craftsmanship and quality is all considered. A museum piece grade is sometimes designated as a G10 with unbelievable features or stone type. This one was heavily used as you can see on the left side. On some of these "axes" both sides were used (chopping and crushing). Probably wouldn't grade more than what we call "field grade" since there is considerable damage on the chopping end, but it sure is a cool find with interesting history. Not sure you care about any of that stuff but just figured there wasn't anything else posted about the characteristics of your piece. I'd put it in a display case for your family to enjoy. Do not donate it to a museum. Most finds going to a museum are on display for a while and when they display new items the artifacts often end up in boxes in closets. Heard too many stories about this happening when avid collectors pass away only to never be properly displayed for all as intended.

I'm very interested in these artifacts, I just don't know much about them. But I plan on just keeping in and hope to find some more related stuff and have start a collection

Fantastic! I've only had this happen to me once, and it was actually a buddy who dug up a flint knife, but had no clue what it was - I did! What a bonus find, and an axe head??? Geez, talk about lucky!
