Who wears headphones while detecting?

Been MD since 1970 and ALWAYS wear phones. All you folks who think they are not missing good faint signals are doing the Egyptian backstroke (in denial). Even when I hunt with others, we hunt to find things, not to engage in conversation. If we need to communicate it's a simple matter of walking over, taking off one side and talking. Last thing I want is someone constantly yammering away at me while I hunt. As other veterans have stated it is rude to impose the sound of your machine on others, whether in public areas or the woods.

I have some hearing loss and I always wear my headphones with the volume turned up, not only can I hear the tones better but the headphones keep out the distractions. I can't hear the pinpointer very well with or without the headphones but I use the vibration of it and it works well for me.

Something stinks... and it's what you just typed! You have no clue what you're talking about. I hear "faint" signals just fine without headphones.

Also... the "Veteran" (HAHA... good friend of mine) who posted about not using headphones was beyond obnoxious... he was just being naughty... (he enjoys creating chaos). He actually yammers away plenty, but also finds the stuff while we have fun - in fact he's one of the best hunters I have ever swung with!

On the other hand, you will never find me in parks or schools... farms and woods only, you know - where the good stuff is.

OCCASIONALLY I use earbuds... say if I am close to a house or something, but this is rare.

Take it from a guy who's been at this 7 years... you don't need headphones/earbuds so as long as you don't have hearing loss and your background noise is null!

Whoever preaches that you simply MUST because you're a noob and will miss targets are simply stating about their own experiences in their own unique environments - do whatever you are comfortable with!

During my hunts, I usually have zero background noise cept' the birds chirpin' and deer a runnin! :D

New to this but would not like that loud beeping and attention it would draw. Traditional over ear head phones hurt as I wear glasses and after an hour I want to rip them off and smash them. I have been using Etymonic Research In-ear head phones for some time for phone and music. Adding a 1/4" adapter and inline volume control worked well. Only issue with these non task specific type units is the thin wires that dangle and tangle. The good thing is you can wear one and have crystal clear isolated sound of you MD in one ear and clear sound of your surroundings in the other, if in a not so safe environment.

If they only made wireless earbuds.... THEN I would use them more. In this modern world of awesome tech, how come no one has made them yet?? Even the CTX3030's wireless module system was too annoying for me.... and I also know what you mean about wearing glasses and wanting to smash my headphones!

If you don't use headphones at the beach and listen for faint targets, someone on the forums is gonna be posting all the gold you left for them. And the rest of us are gonna   Someone out here beach hunts with an MXT without headphones. An MXT is so loud it has people going to the parking lot to see whose car alarm went off:laughing:

I wear headphones - over just one ear. That way, I don't have to take them off to hear my propointer. Can also hear what's going on around me.

The only time I don't wear headphones is when someone is with me who is not detecting and they are interested in hearing the sounds my detector is making and in seeing my finds.

I try to always keep mine on because it gives me a reason to act like I didn't hear someone and just ignore them. But if i'm hunting with a friend I will usually leave the left side off my ear so I can hear them.

I almost always wear them. When I am working a farm or old school sometimes I take them off. If I'm with someone else, however, I always wear them because the sounds from another detector distract me, even when it is far away. I like the solitude that headphones offer me personally. On the other hand, I'm not particularly prejudiced against people who don't wear them.

There's a time/place/configuration for wearing or not wearing them... I've heard about the MXT Pro being super loud - not something people want to hear for hours and hours if your hunting in or near public places. Out in the country - mostly optional unless it's really windy, then the hp or earbuds will help. It also depends on your machine or hp, and if the volume is adjustable or not... but some people don't worry about being 'discreet', no matter where they're hunting - me, I prefer keeping the beeps to myself. It's a matter of preference in some cases.

99+% of the time I wear them on both ears, otherwise, even the noise of the wind diminishes the sound accuracy. And if there are load vehicles or lawn mowers, I can't hear any tones without them. I will, occasionally, try to show respect to land owners who want to gab by wear one on one ear and the other on my head but that is a rare occasion.

Night curb strip crawling...stealth is imperative...one on, one off....slipping between shadows , unheard and unseen in the dark....

I was thinking of getting a mono head set where one speaker on it. I think all popular brands have .

Just for when I go to the park with my kids so I can hair the other parents screaming at my unattended kids lol
