I needed a bit of a "mental health day" as the Hoover Boys are wont to say, so I headed up to Missoula this afternoon to detect a sports field owned by U of M, and that I've hunted several times lately (will post a story later). Temp was 90 with nice sunshine, but I was only finding clad quarters, copper cents, along with the scattered wheat cent which gave me hope for a silver dime or two that did not materialize. Also was getting baked in the hot sun!
Before heading home, I thought about trying for one yard permission, so I headed into the nearby neighborhood and managed to get the OK at a ca 1940 home. The sidewalk out front had the contractor's name and a 1940 date, and the house pretty much matched that. I started in and was only finding a few clad quarters and copper Memorial Cents, when I stumbled across a 1939-D Silver Washington quarter, which surprised me as it didn't ring up that high. Finding that quarter gave me new encouragement and I continued to grid the yard. On one swing, I got a loud 95-96 on the AT Pro, but it seemed like the target was about 10-12" long. I thought maybe junk, but I thought... better check this out, and I turned 90 degrees to this large area, and now I am getting TWO 95-96 signals with a small quiet space between them. Oh boy... now I am getting a bit excited! I selected the target to the east, and down about 5-6" I saw the big Silver Rim of a Silver Dollar... 1922-S PEACE dollar! Now I am getting a bit more wound up as the target to the west is reading the same on the AT Pro. Sure enough, it was a 1921-S MORGAN silver dollar! TWO silver dollars on the same swing! My best swing to date had been up in Great Falls about 4 years ago when I got 2 Standing Liberty Quarters on one swing, but now I had done even better. Doubt that I will ever surpass this unless I run across some gold coins! Hah... like that is going to happen.
Drove home with a big smile and a happy feeling, great to pull the Big Shiny out of a Montana yard! Had to find my "Silver Dollar Saloon" letterhead from the Montana ghost town of Gilt Edge to display these beauties. Thank you for your interest!
