Tried The TRX

I have no doubt Whites will sell a bunch of them and I have no doubt they'll find and fix bugs in the design and engineering. All of that is pretty normal and I'm not saying it's a bad thing. The real point is for pinpointing it just strikes me as going after a fly with an RPG, much overkill and overcomplication. Some folks like the complexity but I think most of us prefer easy and simple.

I'm mostly hoping for stability and reliability for the long haul. All the bells and whistles are neither here nor there if the first requirements aren't met. Some folks will be loyal to propointer even if something better is available. That is the brilliance of Garrett's marketing, mindless brand loyalty. I am not saying that the propointer or the trx is better, only that many will naysay the whites without giving it a thorough opportunity to prove itself.

I've read an aweful lot of comments on this piece of gear and the thing that stands out to me is someone tried to stuff 10 pounds of !!!! in a 5 pound sack. An old engineering principle seems to have been forgotten. KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid.

Ya want a dumb downed pointer buy a garrett. Off and on....and buzz/beep... old engineering principles are just that. ...old. If you have used one and can make an intelligent interjection into the conversation...then go for it. Plenty of tire kickers and nay sayers...that have never touched a TRX....give me a break.

"Dumbed down?" I can only imagie what Garretts made off of the sales from the ProPointer just last year. Seriously...the Garretts is swift when turned on and until the target is retrieved. Until I get my TRX and flex it a lot to give me a change of heart, I will still believe in what the engineers at Garretts put out long ago, AND is still the leader of the PPr industry right now today.

Leaders sometimes have to fall... (Same thing happened with Apple and the iPhone). As which is better and why, I think that only time will tell. Personally I would love to test a trx but can't afford it at this moment.
Main thing is that it's a nice pinpointer and in my opinion it's at least something new and offers users a new option that is not just as a Garrett, it has different features and I know that is what makes it attractive.

Martin,

What I mean is that it is simple.i know they have sold a lot of them and I know they work. I won't dispute that at all. It is similar to the commercial "I pick things up....and I put them down"

The TRX is more adjustable than the propointer ...and the garrett loyalist hate that so they shun it like the new kid on the block without ever giving it a chance. It doesn't matter either way to me because I use my TRX and enjoy what it can do that a PP cant. Makes this hobby just a little more enjoyable and interesting. It should be fun...not a constant haggle about what's better than what. Heck look at the battles that raged on for years about the etrac vs the v3i...

keep it fun people and lighten up ...geez. life is too short !

P.s. I have two propointers probably won't be getting rid of them anytime soon...This trx has to prove itself ...and so far it has.
Peace,

LittleJohn

LittleJohn, I use Whites, Tesoro and Garrett. Each one has its' strengths. As I said, I read a lot of comments, both good and bad, and simply see the new Whites pointer as overcomplicated for the job of pinpointing. Old engineering is just old? Hey, they still use Roman methods to build arches.

Bubba707 I think if you tried a TRX and gave it a chance to impress you with what it can do ...you may just like it. There really is room on the market for more than just a garrett propointer, dont ya think?

for me I still would give it a year to see how the switch holds up. there is going to be a ton of cycles on that switch from all the use of turning it on and off, Ground Balancing it, ratcheting it up and down, there could easily be thousands of cycles on it in a year of hard hunting

I agree surfchunker only time will tell if it holds up!

Of course there's room on the market for lots of things. Some folks are going to love all the bells and whistles, some of us will have little to no use for it all, just like some folks actually use a smart phone while some of us are fine with a basic flip phone. Most of the time I just use the pinpoint on my detector, sometimes I use the Garrett, but I prefer simple to complicated.

That is Whites for you, look at the V3i... :D

Some of us love complex.

The first rule of manufacturing is to be safe. The second rule is make a quality product. There are plenty of us out there That have sent more than one Pro pointer back to Garrett for repairs. If the same rules applied to Pin pointers as it does to automobiles there would be a recall. I use what works. Garrett knows first hand there is a problem with the Pro Pointer and refuses to address the issue. It will come back to haunt them eventually. And I think the TRX is the beginning of that. By the way. The chirpping of the TRX is not a flaw. It requires a ground balance. One quick push of the button. Very simple. Stick with the Pro Pointer and Garrett. It makes no difference to me. But there are plenty of us out there that no longer have faith in a company that makes items that they know there is a problem with. And their top of the line detector continues to be a decade old heavy out dated 2500.

Who needs a flip phone? I prefer a rotary dial..because it's simple. I also prefer my manual knob TV that I have to get up to change...because it's simple....I like my hand pushed manual mower because it doesn't require gas and oil and isn't all confusing.... like hold a bar and pull a rope to start...who needs all those bells and whistles ...and I really prefer an outhouse...who needs to bother with all that fancy modern day porcelain toilet stuff.. a plywood cutout over a 6 foot hole is all I need...and who needs an etrac....All that chatter...When my bho detector picks up metal just fine....

yes with the outlook the naysayers have we would still be in 1974 with the same old technology...same old same old...same old propointer....

This switch is very likely a momentary contact type tact switch, it will be less complex then the latching switch used on the pro-pointer and should be quite reliable.... but time will tell.

Garrett needs to update the coil to a new design, every time my 2 go in it's the same repair.
