The Hoover Boys and the MAX

The Hoover Boys are great. It's their personalities and love of the hobby that makes the videos so watchable. They often show the tid before digging and show the large volume of junk they dig in their wrap up. They are also honest when they're not finding anything even going door knocking when a dig site is a bust. They do their research and often start around sunrise and wrap up after dark.

Love them or hate them, they're the real deal.

100% agree

They do show A LOT of trash in each of their end of show wrap ups. Some of which shows that they do dig a huge amount of targets, both ferrous and non-ferrous.

If they have footage of most of those being dug, then their editing must be a real labor!

All metal mode on the max gains some depth, and a bigger coil on any machine equals more depth. Between the two, you'll reach deeper.
-HOWEVER-
What are you using it for? If relics and you dig everything, skip that and just buy a PI. For example, the Sea Hunter with the big coil is going to be significantly deeper than the Maxx with the big coil, and you'll spend about $650 new.

If you're planning on hunting salt-water beaches. THe ATP/Maxx are both the wrong machines for the job. Go with the NOX...it will hunt dry and wet as well discriminate. The PI will also work great at the beach but it can't disc.
If you don't have some sort of GB adjustment, either manual or automatic, your not going to get more depth with a bigger coil. If a detector came with a say a 8 inch concentric coil and you want to put on a 14x16 DD coil on it. Without no way of adjusting the GB for that coil it will be way too positive and depth will be less than the coil the detector is set for. Just saying putting a bigger coil on any machine will give you more depth is not a correct statement. Small coil size changes are fine, going from a 8 inch round to a 10 inch round won't have much effect. But drastic coil size and type changes without being able to GB it, will decrease performance dramatically.

Im a noob a few months strong. bounty hunter two weeks then AT Max within the 1st month. I am running the stock coil. I have not found anything with the AT Max besides a wheat cent and modern copper. This wheat cent was found on land that dates to the 1950s. This spot the wheat cent was in made the detector jump erratically. Its right by a tennis court 30 ft away. Switching of the frequencies didnt substantially fix the erratic jumping around but it cleared it up enough for me to hear a constant tone and think "theres a penny"... Am i detecting a hunted out spot? maybe. Would the interference affecting my machine affect others leaving the cent there? maybe. Could I tell that the silver deep dime in Calabashes video was a good high tone chirp to dig for when descrim is pushed to 35? Yes. Why check with iron audio when its a high chirp with obvious depth misreading?... I havent found much because someones coil found it before mine went over it or im just in the wrong spot all together. I dont regret my buy with the AT Max. Would I enjoy another brand of detector? You bet your sweet plumbers grass cracks because its a detector period. who wouldnt want ANOTHER DETECTOR.. Any other for any use. All though we dont need another detector. The AT Max is a good one and I say this because my thrill isnt the clad im gathering. Its whats in the range of the clad im searching for. I know the AT Max will deliver it to me if I swing it over it. Period. Plus calabash wears crocs.. Another reason for me to be a straight noob and go for an AT Max when he claims to be the one sent to tell us the Best one. I had to speak up over knowing I would dig that high chirp and his video makes that tone look like !!!!. Learn what the machine is telling you. Not what you want to hear from it. Aside from that Calabash makes good videos. The iron audio (no volume) control still isnt a deal breaker.. Atleast not if youre going for those high tones. I use it to "test" questionable targets. not high tones. If its questionable I prob dig it anyways.

If you have never used another detector then you have nothing to compare it to. How many guys you see switching from a minelab to at max? From a Deus to a At max? From a f75 to a max? From a t2 to a AT MAX? Why do you think that is? If you enjoy it that's great but when you get another brand under your belt come back and talk to us then about performance. Coming from a bounty hunter I'm sure its a giant upgrade but there are way better detectors out there for the money. Ask and see what the majority tells you....

I just sold my ATPro to a guy who had an Equinox 800 and hated it. So it does happen. I think those who don’t like the Equinox arent going to be real vocal about it on these forums because they don’t want to get bullied and belittled by the “my way or the highway” group. Nothing wrong with the Max. Just learn what it’s telling you and you’ll do fine.

Some people hated the at pro. Obviously that was not the norm. Just like the equinox will not work for some. That will not be the norm either. I see the equinox replacing the at series detectors as the go to machine for new detectorists and experienced users with a limited budget.

Hoover boys find more in one trip than most do in a year.I don't think you need a nox,or at max.You need to find places where there's coins. Most Hoover videos are in plowed fields,as are Calabash videos,of actually hunting. You want old coins,go where they are.As for your at pro,it's a hell of a machine regardless of opinions.Ypu get yourself in some old fields your at pro will light up with old coins.Any machine will for that matter.

:goodpost:

I don't disagree that the Equinox is a good. I have to believe the posts and videos because I don't have one. But, it's apparently not for everyone. I might get one someday, but it won't be because forum posters belittle others. I'll give it a year and see what happens when the emperor's new clothes syndrome is over.

Nobody is putting anyone one down. Guy stopped by and dropped his opinion off about what I said that he didn't agree with. I just answered back with my opinion about what he said...if anyone got belittled it was me ! The guy was making fun of my crocs!

He did lose some credibility when he took a shot at your shoes. Although NOX 'N CROCS does have a good ring to it.

DUDE bought a at max because I wear crocs! John Edmonton will get a kick out of that post. I sold a garrett detector with my shoes!:laughing::laughing: BTW I'm burning those shoes!:lol:

The at pro ergonomics were terrible for me. That is the only detector that ever made my wrist sore. I got rid of that thing after three hunts. Im talking aching after an hour. Never had another machine do that to me,and I've owned quite a few different machines. Even some that were considerably heavier.
But those Hoover Boyz sure do hunt some prime real estate.

Ive been using the AT pro for years , and did well with it. I havent owned a max but I know enough about it to call it a slight improvement over the pro. Now that Im using an equinox its like Ive been blind all these years and just now regained my sight. As much as Ive enjoyed the pro , its now gonna collect a lot of dust

The hoover boys use the AT's because they are sponsored , or have some other obligation to Garrett. Nothing wrong with that , but its not because they are all that great , its just what they use on camera
