Sick of garret pro pointer.

Mine started that way and just got worse. Now it vibrates every time after it locates a target and won't stop till I hit it or turn it off.....unacceptable

Throw it across the park. That's what I did and its worked fine ever since!

Have you put a spacer in the battery compartment to keep the battery snug?

I also put tape over all the openings and its worked fine ever since.

That works good for some metal detectors too, worked wonders on my bounty hunter...

I've got a pistol probe. Had to buy a real pistol holster to tote it around, too :) It goes fantastically deep (3-4 which is more than plenty), but it is also awkward and large.

I do envy the touch-sense that the Garrett provides - once it gets close, it seals the deal. But the pistol probe is better for digging spot-on plugs and going directly to the target.

What Garrett needs is a class action lawsuit for the postage we pay to send them back. Maybe then they will fix the problem. By two so you always have one? That answer makes me just want to throw up. :my2cents:

My feelings exactly..... And I'm going to HAVE to send mine in soon as its getting way to bad to use..... So I guess I need to buy another pinpointed now for time being!

Just looked back in my records. Bought my first Garrett PP in July of 2011 so I'm going on 2 1/2 years with well over 500 hours on it and have never had a problem. Bought a backup early this spring because I keep thinking it's going to die sooner or later, but close to 200 hours on it this year, and everything still works. Not sure why people have issues with it.

I use a Minelab and haven't had any problems. It's only when the battery gets down around 7 volts that it starts to act up. Fresh battery and it's back working fine. If I had one thing I would like to see changed is get rid of the speaker. It is just a hole to let moister in. Guess I'll just keep taping the hole shut.

Profind/propointer/ pistol probe/Ect. JUST LIKE CARS; THEY ALL HAVE FLAWS, JUST THE WAY IT IS:(SO I GUESS IT COMES DOWN TO WHAT COMPANY HAS THE BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GARRETT WINS AGAINJust my opinion!

Stories like this why people should continue to buy Garretts PPrs. I have had the same good experience since 2010.

I think some of the issues stated with the propointer are battery related, for those that are having the erratic propointers, put a new battery in it and see if that cures the problem. It's quite common for the propointer to start acting erratically and not shutting up when the battery gets weak. That being said, I know there are real issues with the propointer! Ie...switches, calibration, etc... I've also had the ML profind and didn't like it. It's well built, but it dosen't vibrate enough to feel with my detecting gloves on, and it was too quiet to hear with headphones. Not to mention I had to turn down the sens. in order for it to work properly, which decreased it's depth capability. Never used a pistol probe, but I will say the Sunray is a well worth the money. My problem is that I keep changing detectors and the probe is specific to the detector....

I have had to deal with Garrett one time with a warranty(AT Pro not pro pointer) issue and they are great. I am guessing in the grand scheme of things the number of pin pointers that they sell and later get returned is lower then we think. If it was that big of a problem they would fix it. For every one person on here who has had an issue there are likely 50 to 100 who have never had an issue, those people don't have a need to start a thread and ask why their pin pointer is working correctly so we don't hear from them. Mine is almost two years old and not one issue with it.

I have 3 Garrett Propointers, my oldest one is going on 4 years old, the paint is long gone and the letters are starting to wear off. (It seems to be on permanent loan to a hunting buddy...:D)

I have never had any trouble with any of them, but, I don't use them as a digger/scraper or side load the wand while in the hole. Use them as they were meant to be used and they will last a long time.

Send it back and get a Centech while waiting, I got one because I can't afford a pro, but I modified mine, instructions in forum, put a new switch, replaced speaker for vibration, and duct taped the probe, silicone it to reduce moisture, at first it feels odd in the hand, boxy but you get used to it, I can adjust mine to find some metal up to 2.5-3inches deep, averages at 1.5 inches deep for all metals, it's the only pinpointer I have but for those that can afford better, it is well worth it for a back up.

i too use a cen-tech but have only done the sensitivity mod.i have found that a fresh battery tends to straighten out the constant beeping.

is it possible that you could post a picture of your modded cen-tech Jo Ann? i'd like to see how yours now looks so i can copy cat it:cool:. thanks

I can, it is dirty and beat, but really I probably need to open it and check the connections soon, so will do after I come in today from MDing :D

I realize there have been complaints on pro-pointers, many of them legit, some not legit. But mine first one is on its 2nd year, thousands of holes and on/off cycles, many batteries, a few drops, never been washed, used to dig a bit in light soil, never been altered in any way. It still works fantastic and I wouldn't go out with out it!
I use a rechargeable 9v in it, and run it till it starts acting funny, but it runs a long time. Make sure the battery is tight in it and it runs great. Sometimes it will beep if set down usually due to some other metal object near it like my digger or buried junk.
