Seeking Wisdom Here....

I will have to do this once again, to try and recollect...

I dug it to where the box had 4-6" of dirt on top of it. So, that means it could be anywhere from 6-14" deep without settling. I know it is a long shot, but I am hoping that I get lucky.

If you still live in West Virginia, then we're known for lots of our clay....which is obviously stable. But if it's truly that dry up there it could always sink from the rain, weight and everything else. I still wish you great luck on your hunt. If you find it make sure to show us pics!!

I read through all of this hoping he had found it! That would really suck to lose your childhood treasures that way :( I'd help if I were closer!

it's gotta be somewhere in the yard, or maybe someone had found it. maybe seen the fresh dirt turned over and what not and start digging.

Another evening in the yard - clearing bad targets.

Was able to find a 0.39 in clad, and a pretty sweet clearly canadian bottle cap. I miss that drink.

Search goes on...

Thankful for the rain, I set out for 30 mins this evening to seek my treasure.

Did not find it, however, I dug some terrific stuff. I found what I believe is some sort of old ring (not Ag or Au), a sweet old matchbox dragster and a copper? owl type thing. I found some clad, and missed my first silver by two years (1966 Dime). Great time in the rain.

KEEP on SWINGING!

good luck MOFO you gotta just keep swinging!!! it will happen!!! cant wait to see the conclusion to this post!

Well, I decided to hit the yard again tonight - 2 days of rain this week, and a little free time.

I had honestly planned on hitting a curb strip down the road, however, it was after dark and I did not want to cause alarm for any nosy neighbors.

I was only out for about an hour, but it was my most satisfying hunt thus far. I did not continue to grid the possible location of the box, and decided to focus my efforts on a piece of dirt where an old hedgerow was.

Ace 250 was loving the moist soil, and was picking up stuff I had walked over before. It was during my grid of the hedgerow that the machine started burping different tones - signaling between pulltab-5c-1c about 4" down. I recently read on these forums that "just because it's jumpy, does not mean you shouldn't dig it".

So I cut my plug, sift through the loose soil and to my surprise, I see a gunmetal colored edge of a coin. I thought "that's a well preserved nickel". A reeded edge was seen during closer examination, and I nearly pee'd in my pants - it's a 1942 Mercury (my first silver)!!!!

I was so excited and still am.

I continued searching, but I kind of lost my concentration after that flash of silver. I did find another wheat (1944) and a super corroded, crusty Zincoln and the usual random junk.

Thanks to all that have posted helpful tips regarding md'ing! It's not my treasure, but it's treasure nontheless. Search goes on...

Took a short break from detecting (bulging disc).

Since it's been rainy the past week, I figured I would go out for a couple of hours of swinging this evening, and had a blast. Pulled a lot of junk targets out of the ground, but the dirt was also very generous.

I found 2 nickels, 1 dime, 1 quarter (almost silver - 1965), 4 modern Abe's, 2 green Abe's, and my first Indian (also my oldest coin - 1906).

I have been contacted by a member of the lostmystuff community and I am hopeful that I can find my treasure soon. I am, however, becoming very addicted to finding other treasure. The search continues....
