Seeking Wisdom Here....

Hello mdf people!

I just wanted to update everyone on my status. My status = frustrated, and feeling a little crazy. LoL. I have been searching for this thing everyday for the last 3 weeks. Just getting weary of poking and digging. Very frustrating. Anyways, I talked to my grandfather, and he said that the box I was referring to was a "Mining Bit Box", a thick plastic/pvc box used to hold coal mining bits. He also told me that he did not believe a metal detector could pick up the little bit of silver I had in there.

So no good news, but I am undaunted. The search goes on.

Hey Texdon...what Garrett are you referring to that goes three feet into the ground and also could you name the many more detectors that do this please ?
Thanks !

Hello all,

It has been 5 years since I have posted or even logged in here, and I thought I would drop by and give you all an update.

All lot has changed in the last 5 years, I have gotten married, moved away, changed jobs twice, and all the while - thinking about my long, lost treasure.

I recently purchased an Ace 250, due in part to my desire to find the box. I know it's not the best metal detector, but the general consensus led me to my decision to buy this detector.

I have spent almost 10 hours swinging in the location I believe the box to have been buried, and I still haven't found it. I have located a lot of trash - foil, pop cans, nails, iron, lead, matchbox cars, an old pack of doublemint gum, several aluminum arrows, a few broadheads, a metal cross, pull tabs, bottle caps, and over $1 in assorted quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies (all clad/no wheats).

I am beginning to wonder if it is even there at all, it is possible that someone has found it - but I remain determined to search. I have the stock 6x9 coil and I just purchased the 8.5x11 DD coil - thinking the extra depth would help me out. I am afraid I made the wrong decision on coils though, as it seems the DD hits a lot of trash, way more than the stock coil. I am thinking I should have went with the sniper coil...

Also, the soil here is bone dry, due to the recent drought. I have heard that moist soil is best for md. Any truth behind that?

As always, any advice/help/tips appreciated.

Wow!! It has been a long time. Here is what I would do. If you have it narrowed down to a 10x10 feet grid, Put a sprinkler on it for 3 hour, let is set over night, use your 250 to dig every single signal in the ground. Once the area is completely cleaned out, bring someone in with an E trac or 30 30 and let them fish for it. I'm just throwin this out there. If i was sure it was there Id just dig up the whole yard. Good luck.

I took your advice, soaked it for about 4 hours (1 extra hour for all the dryness lately), let it sit all night - then hit a 10x10 area today. Found several coins, some junk.

I have spent about 10 hours swinging in the backyard, and so far I have found $1.67 in clad, some old cars, and lots and lots of junk. Here's some pics of my junk so far (last pic is the coins found today).

Now, tell us the truth. Before you got married did you tell your future wife that box you buried was worth a fortune?? Maybe that's why she married ya'!!!! Come on now, let's here it.

It must still be there! I live in West Virginia but in Kanawha County and pretty much always busy! I wish ya good luck on your hunt for treasure. Anyways, my lil Fisher F2 wouldn't do much. I would get someone with an Etrac. Nice to see you're back on the forums.

Hahahaha, well, I did tell her about it now that you mention it.

She's going to buy me an E-trac for Christmas - and she let's me go MD'ing anytime I want.... maybe she is in this for the money....

I certainly hope that it is. And the Fisher F2 is a good machine. I almost bought that instead of the Ace250. Anytime you want to come help look, you are welcome.

As a matter of fact, anyone here is welcome to help me look. If it found by you, or due to your efforts - I will split the silver with you 50/50.

Well, I just couldn't stay inside all evening, especially after posting my finds ~ so once again I set out to find my treasure.

Dug a lot of !!!! again, however, this was the best hunt in the yard to date. Started of in my hot spots (where I thought I buried it), however, the mosquitos were swarming me.

I found 2 identical wine bottle caps, 2 old Pepsi cans (not pictured), a 4x7 iron plate (also not pictured) and some aluminum can parts. Decided to look out front of my house for the 3rd time.

We got some rain earlier today, a nice slow shower, and I think this really helped. I found 4 dimes, 3 pennies, and 2 wheats - one of which a 1910 (my oldest find in 2 weeks of md'ing)!!! The search goes on.

Just curious. In the past years since burying the silver has there been any additions to the house or out buildings or any sidewalks or steps poured? If so, it could be under those. Also did you have friends back then that you told of your buried treasure? Please don't take that wrong, just trying to give you answers to think about. Good luck.

No sir, the ground has not been disturbed in any way (to my knowledge). And the only 2 people that knew that I buried something and the general location, were my mother and my brother. My mother passed away 14 years ago, and my brother has no recollection of where it might be.

I didn't take that wrong at all, I appreciate the ideas. It is very possible that someone found it and it is no longer there, but I have had a blast looking and will continue to do so.

very interesting story, I hope you find your long lost treasure and please post pictures of it when you do find it. Good Luck!!

Go outside and set down right on the door step and think . Think about were you spent most of your time when you was a kid think about things you was doing at that age think think and think again it has to come to you if you set there long enough. Were did you get the box from shed ,house ,barn . Being a kid you probably did not want anyone to see you digging or hiding your treasure so look for them spots . Were did you spend the most time at in the yard?

Hmmm have you any memory of how deep it is? I know how thick those coal mining boxes are and the deeper they are the least likely to find them with the average detector.

I will have to do this once again, to try and recollect...

I dug it to where the box had 4-6" of dirt on top of it. So, that means it could be anywhere from 6-14" deep without settling. I know it is a long shot, but I am hoping that I get lucky.

Spent a couple hours in the yard again tonight.

Not much excitement, found a wheat penny (3rd so far), 6 pennies, a dime, and a few cool artifacts: a spent .270 shell casing, a butter knife, half of and old toy revolver, a small cache of rusty nails, part of one of my brothers long lost Easton aluminum arrows and several pull tabs.

I had high hopes for this evening - due to the rain we received today (Thanks Hurricane Isaac!). Maybe tomorrow...
