Protecting the Garrett Pro pointer

Mine has falsed when I shoved it against the ground. Apply pressure - beep. Stop pressure - no beep. Sometimes it's because I'm pushing it just close enough to the target to go off. Sometimes it's falsing (check by pushing somewhere else and it goes off). Sometimes mine will just keep beeping in the air.

I have found that so far, when it starts acting up like this, all I have to do is turn it off and back on again and it works correctly. So far that has worked... mine is just under 1 month old.

The tool definitely should be designed to be able to withstand pressing it hard against the ground. I'm sure we all do it... you shove the thing hard into the dirt. I've been in muddy ground that's soft enough I can probe it a few inches into the ground before I dig. It's just the nature of the tool... you are going to shove on the back of it. I shove mine probably harder than I should.

I almost feel bad for Garrett but then I don't. I have friends that own restaurants and other business that say "Hey if there is something that is not to your satisfaction please let us know so we can correct it" If someones steak isn't done properly the cook will not make an adjustment if no one brings it to his attention. For some reason it seems an awful lot of pro pointers went out the door that went haywire soon after. I hope Garrett has made adjustments and identified and corrected the problem/problems so they do not have to spend any time or money fixing what seems to be a large amount of them. I thought I took good care of mine as well and it seems so heavy and durable when you look at it or feel it. For some reason it's not. I had to send mine in after a few months. Garrett is great, "we're sorry....thank you very much"....Quick return no hassels. I am contemplating calling them and asking if there is something I can do different so this doesn't happen again. Does it need a whole protective cover? Maybe just the battery cap or microphone or only the on/off button protected? Is it temp changes? Too hot or too cold? I'd really like to know, I would be glad to do more a make a protective cover is the lack of one is causing the issues.

I'm pretty sure Garrett sells a LOT of Pro Pointers. Without knowing how many they've sold vs how many have been returned due to problems with design or manufacture I'm not sure negligence is a fair charge. Folks who have problems talk about it here. We don't hear much from the owners of Pro Pointers who don't have problems.

How many of these propointer threads do I have to come to and sing the praises of the VIBRAPROBE? Their completely waterproof and have no switch for water and dirt to get into. That's alright, buy your first propointer and when that one dies buy two more, one to use and one for a backup....it makes no sense. I'll leave you with the following quote:

"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." Albert Einstein

Anyone else notice the irony of these two sentences being in the same post? That's pretty funny right there.

That actually is funny. Maybe I should have thought that post through a bit more, lol. Really it's become a bit of a game for me....everytime I see a propointer thread involving water or dirt getting into it and people looking for solutions I feel it is my duty to inform them that there are other options. It seems people just want to travel with the rest of the flock, even if there are better options out there. I'm sure the propointer is a fine piece of equipment, it just has flaws that have been addressed by other companies. Oh well, I'm off to wait for the next propointer problem thread. Good night.:D

I have had my old Vibraprobe since the early 90's
It has been in and out of the water ,dropped and muddy
And still going strong.
I have thought about getting one more for a spare.

a couple things i dislike about the vibraprobe was the longer size and also that it would make my AT pro very chatty as soon as i turned the pinpointer on......and not ta mention how creepy i look at the local tot lot with a sheath that says vibra probe on it
i'm alittle disapointed that when minelab released the profinder that it wasn't submersible esp since it was close to the same release time as the ctx

Propointers Acccckkkkk

I think the majority of PP owners have a love hate relationship with it! I don"t think the answer is Putting it into a Condom, however if you use a colored reservoir end Ribbed condom at least your hunting buddies will get a good laugh! I live about 30 miles from Garrett and have taken mine in twice! 50 minutes is the longest time I ever spent getting it fixed. Like Goodmore I'm looking for something better! I will keep my Garrett until they stop fixing it though. GL & HH.......Pat

That's why I won't buy one. They tend to interfere with the detector and that is as big of a problem as the pro pointer coil going bad.

I really like the pro pointer and as long as they will repair or replace it, I will keep using it. I have 2 of them, one for my wife and one for me. Her's started falsing and I sent it in and had a new one in 13 days. The one I use has worked flawlessly for 2 years so I can't complain.

I would like to try the minelab profind sometime this year. It looks like a good one.

Wow. My humble opinion is that Garret is the best. I just called Garret Sales and got a replacement rubber button sent to me in the mail free after using it for 2 years once a week all day except for the winter months. I wore out the rubber button and it was caving it and losing its flexibility!!! The new rubber button fixed it. Still working great! Garret is the best!!! Taking care of your tools is very important!! I don't hold it under water. I turn it off and on when needed. I don't drop it. I do lay it down in the dirt. I do use it in a lot of mud and wipe it down as much as possible. I do tape the speaker. I wipe it clean after every hunt. I also oil it down. I cannot complain. I guess I got a lucky one? Good Luck. Your mileage may vary.

You could also put the GPP in a vacuum seal bag I know a guy who did that and uses his in the water

I have thought of using our seal a meal machine to incase my pro pointer this year since i bought a hookah diving machine. Just a little worried that it wouldn't take much to snag the plastic and lose the seal. A good submergable pin pointer isn't really all that expensive and if i screw up the pro pointer then i've wasted $127.00 Decisions decisions.:?:

Both of my Garret's need to be sent it...can only detect a coin at 1 inch.

Sent 1 in today.

Gonna wait for it to come back until I send the other on in.

I might just try a minelab profind....

I use no pressure at all when using my PP. I kind of just lightly touch the bottom of the hole and around the inside, i have no idea why people feel the need to shove the thing in there and dig with the PP, that's what your digging tool is for.
