Protecting Pro Pointer tip?

Yeah. Got to do something here shortly. This dry desert ground sometimes is like sand paper. So far seems the vote is either bed liner or rubber dip. Too bad there is nothing to skip over it. Hmmmm... maybe a trip to the ol hardware store is in order. Lol.

I hear ya!! I've been using my Compadre for about 2 1/2 months and I had to order a new coil cover for it......the rocks ate up the one it has on it now.....

Quick Update...

Hmmm, ok, so, I decided to use the Plasti-Dip stuff... piece o cake to use... don't seem to have any performance degradation... and so far has been taking the abuse of this dry ground ok... here is what it looks like with having dipped it once, then once more about 30 mins later... so, reckon two coats.

I have used the tool handle dipping solution sold at hardware stores. it's cheap and its rubberized. works good. I used red color so it's also easier to find if laid in the grass.

Ok. Quick update. This stuff is holding up fine and dandy so far. Hunted a number of times and its taking the abuse. Hope I just added a few more years of use. I like it. Also dipped a few other items. Lol. Like my zippo as it Was too slippery. Lol. Neat stuff.

Digger27 has some great ideas....

I don't have holes in mine, but it is worn a lot. I think i'll try Digger27's ideas.

Call your local ACE Hardware. Ask for item # 56925. These are 7/8" (22 mm), black plastic caps. 4 to a pack and ~$2.

You will have to cut a knotch out ~ 3/8" long by 1/8" wide for the scraper. It is a pretty snug fit but you may want to use a dab of clear or black RTV to keep it in place.

I do not like caps. Regardless of how well you think you've sealed the edge, water and dirt can still accumulate in the caps. A solid rubberized surface is more my speed.

Some chemicals in hole-filling adhesive can adversely affect some plastics.

Quick update

Ok, my results were that when I used the rubber dipping stuff... it lasted a while, but then started to peel off (on mine anyways)... ok, could re-dip etc... no big deal... but, decided to try the truck bed liner (Dupont as mentioned in another thread)... initially did the one coat, lasted much longer than the rubbery dip stuff... but I ended up putting a second coat on, "just because". Its been a while, and that is still holding up real well. Have not noticed any performance degradation.

Thanks again folks.

Ron

i've had 3 coats of bedliner spray on mine for several months now and its holding up great

Update...

Ok, figured, its been a while... I'd throw a quick update together... as I am really pleased with my current results on protecting the tip.

Ok, I had tried the dip into the rubber stuff... and it worked pretty good for me, for a while... so, then I tried the Bed liner, and it worked a bit longer, and pretty good again, for a while... BUT... this has worked now for months and months, I am really happy with it... its similar to what Jeff suggested, but instead of the plastic ... I bought the rubber ones, cut a small slot, and fitted it to the end of the PP... went on tight, has been on for months and months, and is still not showing any signs of wear... and don't feel I lost any sensitivity... I went with rubber instead of plastic as I did not want to glue it on... if you try this, buy the size that you will need to press on - tightly... no sign of it loosening etc... its on nice... and really, no wear, unreal.... here are some photos... please excuse the dirty PP... did not clean it yet from last nights hunt. But all in all, some great suggestions... but for me... this one did the trick, I bought a pack of 4... and may not even need the others, lol. Really has staying powers in this hard AZ dirt.

Anyways, hope it helps someone and thanks folks, as always.

Ron

I've seen some badly bad worn propointers that still worked fine, I suspect if mine ever wears out enough I'll call Garrett and see if they can replace the casing cheap instead of the entire unit. Garrett's customer service is probably the best in the industry, so I expect they'd work something out. If not, I'll consider it $100 worth of good use and get a new one.

I dipped my HF pinpointer in the rubber stuff used for tool handles and have not experienced any degredation in performance. I'm fairly agressive when using it and the rubber seems to be holding up well. I dipped it a couple of times.
