Pocketspill.com is now Detecting.us

I'm working on my third map already, this is too much fun

that's awesome.

make sure to go out in the field and check that your maps are plotting well. I did one county and then drove around to make sure it was plotting reasonably well. Ended up re-doing that map with more points, spread out more evenly on the map.

Yeah,I do so many points the error numbers are under five.

Augusta Relic Hunters Destroy Cemetary - Working on Fund

This will be quick.

I am working on setting up an indiegogo crowdfunding account for the clean up and restoration of the cemetary that relic hunters destroyed near Augusta.

* YES we know the difference between relic hunters and grave robbers. Does the public? I think not. It's our job to make that difference clear, and actions speak louder than words.....

continuing...

As far as the name for the fund, I'm thinking of "Responsible Relic Hunters and Metal Detectorists from the Internet" but I'm giving the rights organizations a chance to express interest in participation before I do.

The story: http://chronicle.augusta.com/news/c...urke-county-cemetery-desecration?v=1366326576

Watch this news page for progress (or not)
http://www.detecting.us/cemetery

This fundraiser ($5 or $10 at a time) could raise enough in a couple days to cover the restoration and to give our hobby a real gold star along the way.

Please watch the page for info ... I may not be on the forum for a while.

These were not "Relic hunters" but grave robbers. No respectable student of history would ever consider doing something so terrible.

We in the detecting/relic community know the difference.

The BILLION other people do not.

It's OUR JOB to make it clear. ACTIONS like this idea are what does that.

That's why I am looking into this.

Watch this page for news:

If the fund starts, info will be on this page. I'm still working on the outreach and inquiry.

Just a hunch but they probably dumped the remains out so they could run a detector over them. I wonder how much effect the tv shows have on this, thinking they will get big bucks for civil war items. Hopefully there are caught when they try to sell the stuff or post that they found it. Prison time might cure this.
And we wonder why people think it is ok to md in a cemetary. To the average citizen they would compare it to what these criminals did. JMHO.

These culprits were neither Relic hunters nor detectorists..
Plain and simple, they were grave robbers...
Relic hunters wouldn't be interested in a babys' grave...

Don't really see how this article could possibly be confused with metal detecting...JMHO

Ever heard of "collateral damage"?

That's what this does to detectorists and relic hunters.

Feel free NOT to participate.

Update.... we've almost got the indiegogo account set up. Just waiting on their non-profit EID and a few mini details.

Thanks to MDF forums for featuring my post.

Great idea but I’m not too fond of the affiliation between what happened and metal detectorists. More often than not, when a group responds positively there will be those that will twist the generosity into an admission of guilt. And we, the responsible detectorists, don’t need additional scrutiny with the spot light on us.

On the other hand, this can be a very good for us detectorists if it is made very clear the difference between thieves/grave robbers and respectable detectorists that care about public opinion.

Let us know how this idea develops – I’m a Legionnaire and AMVET member and I’md willing to contribute to restoring the graveyard of our veterans.

I think silence is a lot easier to trample than a positive, productive response.

If the message is clear, it's an opportunity to make a clear statement about relic hunting. We do not condone such crimes and our hobby is a healthy, lawful endeavor focused on preserving history in an ethical, legal manner.

When you get it set up fully, PM me... I'd like to help spread the word to my blog subscribers, twitter followers, etc

One question. When building the maps, do you just plot where you think they are when going from the old map to the new map. I think this would be great but is there anyway to marking the site on the new map 100% accurately as to where the old site was. If not, then your placement may be off and I think it would make things hard.

you have to use known structures, etc. Like road intersections. However, if you're like me, you have no maps outside of state view maps and/or county maps thus making it more difficult.
