Not quite sure how to take this

Be polite and tell her you are looking for common American coins from the time the property was built, and not native American artefacts, relics, and so on. Whatever you do, be polite (and, IMHO, brief). Good luck.

I suggest you delete your Craig's list ad or dumb it down to a very generic listing and DO NOT RESPOND to any email from the A.S.A. as you could be traced via your IP connection to your computer for archival purposes. Any email contact with a governmental official is considered a public document.

Please don't go there...

-That is very sound advice and totally accurate.-
Like most here it is tempting to go back at them because it makes you mad because the law is unjust in your case. This could be somebody justifying keeping their job searching out people looking for real historical sites to plunder. We all know it happens on a regular basis. I totally agree that rewording your your post leaving out key words so as not to be targeted will most likely remedy the situation.
Lastly, they WILL hang you with a short rope and a tall tree for digging Indian artifacts/burial grounds. You will have the State, Feds and the local tribes clamoring to see who gets the honor!

These folks clearly do not understand our hobby and act on their perceptions which are in many cases ill founded. If they would ever take the time to understand what we do and how much of a resource we could be to them and vice versa, then these types of things and many of the rules and regs out there would be avoided.

Its really not necessary to include in your add exactly what you are looking for. I had good responses in my ad just saying I was looking for anything that may have been dropped or lost over the years and if the home/landowner was curious I would share the finds. Its best to be as vague as possible describing what you are looking for to the owner anyway , let them believe as many do , that there isnt anything worth finding in their yard so what will it hurt to let you try. Ive had people say I didnt even need to share the finds with them because they didnt really think anything was out there. ;) I would not try to reply to that official email , they are not gonna change their mind no matter what you say. There is no way they are gonna know if you search an old property and remove old coins, etc. its not like they are gonna have you followed or anything. This person must be really bored to waste time rebuking the gerneral public. I wouldnt worry about it , just dumb down your craigslist ad like has been suggested so that you dont recieve more junkmail from these people and go on about your business.

How about the fact that you are asking to hunt on private property, property owners still have right and ownership to articles found on thier property.

I could be wrong, but it seems the state is laying claim to all artifacts found on private property also. Sounds like they're trying to establish that all archaeological relics belong to the state, regardless of who owns the land.

eminent domain
The right of a government to appropriate private property for public use.

Here's my 2 cents worth. Change your ad to include something along the lines "I observe and follow all state and federal laws relative to archeological sites" or something along those lines. Also, I would not answer the email in any way, shape or form because it puts you in the position of acknowledging an official notification from a state agency (whether you agree with it or not).

You never know who is reading these posts.

In the UK, an anti-detecting ex-archaeologist who now works abroad, was cutting and pasting text from metal detecting threads onto his own website.

Then using it as "evidence", to run the hobby down.

Don't give them ammunition

I do think that archaeologists, state, fed agencies monitor forums like this and others that has anything to do with MD,arrowheads, artifacts etc from time to time. There afraid that someone may find the Holy Grail or something big and they won't get the credit. But they also don't have the manpower to enforce the laws on the books. So they attempt to enforce by sending emails.

Baloney

There are people who have nothing better to do each day than to post BS on Craigslist. I see this kind of stuff all the time. If a property owner gives you permission then that is all you need.

Here's the Wash. state definition of Archaeological object:

"(8) "Archaeological object" means an object that comprises the physical evidence of an indigenous and subsequent culture including material remains of past human life including monuments, symbols, tools, facilities, and technological by-products."

That's pretty broad - could include pull tabs since they are a technological by-product of a subsequent culture (us).
