Military Plates

Epic buckles guys! Some amazing ones on here. I don't have much Civil War history by me, so it is nearly impossible for me to find anything from the war by me. But I have found several awesome G.A.R. items last year, including this buckle that I had found in a bottle dump. It is very solid and in good shape. Thank you all for looking! HH! :)

Rectangular C.S.A. Buckle Found Today!

:shock::shock::shock:I found this today and I am still speechless. It was about 8 or 9 inches deep. I have done just a little research so far on this buckle and know that it is a "Atlanta Arsenal" style and looks fantastic. I will be researching it much more tonight.:shock::shock::shock: A video is up on my YouTube channel. Check it out if you'd like to see more on the find. HH!

Update to my last post where I stated I had yet to find one......

Recovered this one this summer about 10 feet down from the James River while diving. It's pretty awesome to look back on this thread from a few months ago when I originally posted, and remembering the feeling when I pulled out my very first plate from the river mud.

Its a particularly rare US box plate with brass hooks on the back. Most hooks are made of iron. This has been identified as a .69 caliber ammo box plate used by Ohio troops during the war.

Dang Wolf........the James River mud sure takes care of that brass. That's a beautiful plate you have there. I have been wanting to get wet but can't seem to find the time or places to look for treasure buried in the murky depths below.

I did get out last weekend and was with a couple buddies hunting a spot that has been hunted like about 4 bizillion times. I didn't find much but one of the guys that hasn't been hunting that long got lucky. I was hunting nearby when I heard this yelling and screaming and didn't know weather to run or go see what kind of animal was eating my buddy. As I sneaked through the woods being careful not to disturb what ever it was that was eating my friend I saw him dancing around in a circle waving his hands in the air like he was doing some kind of war dance. When I got over to where he was he had tears in his eyes and was smiling so hard I was sure his face was broke. He had just dug his first ever US belt buckle and it was almost perfect, still had all the hooks on the back and there was not a scratch on it.

After sharing his excitement for a moment or two I went on my way to do some more looking with hopes of me finding something nice. About an hour later I heard him yelling again and went back over to see what that was all about and dang if he hadn't found a box plate that was probably the match to the buckle he had found earlier. It also was in perfect shape and looked like it had just hit the dirt. It was about 12 feet from where he had dug the buckle. What a day for the rookie.....He has never found much more than bullets and a few rivets but he sure made up for all that time this go around.

What makes it worst my other buddy just called me to tell me he had just found another box plate in the same area. He went back this morning to look for the breast plate that went with the other two pieces and came up with his plate. He said it was also in beautiful shape and I'll have to go over this afternoon to take a look at that one two.

Hopefully lady luck will hit me up side the head the next time we hit that spot cause my luck has been a little off here lately. Although I did find two nice NY coat buttons that cleaned up really nice the other day. Last night I found a coin that I think is a capped bust half dime. It has a 1835 date but someone has drilled a hole right where the 5c or 10c would be and I can't tell what it is. I love to find old coins.

Nice.... Sold all mine when I was I. The army and only lived on 800 a month to buy my wife her ring.... Haven't found another in 13 years.... Found 19 in two years before.... Go figure.... Nice plates hopefully will post some new finds soon.

I'm not sure about this one. I found it a few days ago in a place that I had found a Texas State button last summer. It hit 75 on the AT Pro and about knocked my ear out of joint when I went across it. I don't know how I could have missed it the many times I had hunted that very spot before with both my Nautilus and the Minelab.

I know....it's a bad pic...cell phone but you get the idea. I've found smaller frame buckles before but this one is much larger. It's about 2 1/4 inches wide X 2 inches and weighs 3/4 of an once. The belt loop keeper is still workable and didn't break off like most of them do.

It's not much but it's all I have to offer as things have been kinda slim lately.

That's nice OldDude. Could be a carbine sling buckle. Not sure. See you got the AT Pro. You're ready for the water this year now!! Let me know when you want to get together. Seems like you've got some good stories, would love to talk relics sometime.

Cool.....What part of town do you call home? I think I said before I live in Varina near the Charles City line. It's hard for me to make plans anymore because of the way my life is right now but I would love to get together and talk sometimes about this great habit......I mean, hobby we share. Oh snap! I'm in the middle of a high jacking, sorry.....PM me sometime and maybe we can set something up.

I sure wish I had one to show, fellas!

It's one of those things that I can only say "stay tuned."

Found this one today, My first river Plate

It was not very deep in the gravel and has been melted in a fire.

Thanks Gtoast99 for the reminder to post here also.
