Military Plates

Update to my last post where I stated I had yet to find one......

Recovered this one this summer about 10 feet down from the James River while diving. It's pretty awesome to look back on this thread from a few months ago when I originally posted, and remembering the feeling when I pulled out my very first plate from the river mud.

Its a particularly rare US box plate with brass hooks on the back. Most hooks are made of iron. This has been identified as a .69 caliber ammo box plate used by Ohio troops during the war.

US Boxplate

I dug this Cartridge Box Plate on the siege lines outside Savannah, Georgia about 25 years ago, in 1988 or 1989. The lead-filled backing was very oxidized and flaking/falling out, so I stabilized it with a coat of Elmers glue. It's held it together ever since.
Back then, I used a Nautilus MF detector, and man was that thing sensitive. But it couldn't take the abuse of the jungles of Florida and Southern Georgia, and finally broke down beyond repair. I still have an old LF Nautilus that I used occasionally.

Nice one Thommy! The "Old Timers" around here still swear by the Nautilus. And the few of them that have since upgraded to Fishers and Minelabs, still carry their Nautys around with them. Maybe they know something I don't. Guess I should get one too. :D

Bumped for more plates! I know a few have been found lately on the forum. Somebody drop a line to the digger who posted the AVC in the eye-poping section, that needs to be in here too. I'll post my US box from DIV after work. MORE PLATES! My favorite thread :D

Saw your comment on another thread about this thread in particular. Had to check it out and post mine. Found my first last month and it was not even on my list of things I thought i might find. It is one of my top 5 favorite finds of all time.

Thanks gtoast99 for the heads up. I've been out of commission for a couple weeks.....a busted up knee and a busted up computer all at the same time. At least I could sit on my butt and fix the computer.:D

I don't have much to show compared to some of the other lucky, 'cough' 'cough' skillful guys here on the site but I will humbly offer up some of what I have found.
