Metal Detecting Banned

I have to disagree with you there Puddle. The government has its hands in our pockets way too much and WAY too deeply now. A mere mention of something like that will stretch to any area not owned by the individual. It's already tough for some folk to get a detector, start throwing fees for licenses and permits on top of that, it'll shut quite a number out of the hobby, not to mention put some of us in the position of breaking some ordinance (not a law) and giving more of our hard earned $$ to a government that doesn't have a clue about true fiscal responsibility. Hey, it's not their money and they know where to get more of it when they want it.

Very true, sometimes I forget that our government is run by lawyers :D In theory its not a bad idea, but your right, they would screw it up some how.

Electro--
Thanks for the response. We have numerous metal detectorists that are going to the town hall meeting with Mayor Jerry Abramson in January. We are contacting the right contacts and will put a stop to this this nonsense before it gets out of hand.

Post the Mayors email address here and let us contact him as well. Post it on the other forums with an explanation.

I might add that it would behoove MD manufactures and retailers to get involved also. This is not just our hobby; it's their livelihood that's being threatened. Contacting them about this can't hurt the effort.

In the fishing world orvis, bass proshops and others are always involved and donate recources and money.

A friend on the phone today asked me if I heard of this and I said never seen anything about it, but than here it is.

I know most of us are hesitant to get involved with permits, licenses, etc., but that might be the best way to handle this situation. In my area the MDing clubs worked with the local gov't to develop a permit program for the parks. Some parks which are legitimate historic sites are off-limits. $25 annual fee. One of the clubs has to certify that you can properly dig holes, etc. Being able to carry that permit with you is great peace of mind, knowing that you won't be hassled. The gov't is then able to act if someone is leaving holes or detecting without a permit, at least in theory. In my case unfortunately there seems to be little enforcement, I haven't been asked for the permit yet.

Good Luck with the meeting.

Ridiculous rule...keep fighting !...there's a ban in my town against detecting on ALL city property..parks included...I was able to get police permission to detect with the stipulation of "no digging" ..hey, better than nothing..just over 800 coins found in the parks this year...I'm well aware of the cause for the ban..everything was open until about 20 years ago when a group of teenagers decended on the parks with a detector designed for cache detection and full size shovels for digging..it was unbelievable...I came up on them one afternoon at a school yard...the grounds looked like a mortar range...I told them they needed to fill in the holes they'd dug, but all I got was a grin and they left the grounds...I seriously considered a new use for my screwdriver - digger but decided a lawsuit or jail time wasn't really in my best interest...less than 2 weeks later "NO METAL DETECTING " signs were up everywhere...of course , instead of prosecuting the vandals the "powers that be" took the path of least resistance and banned everybody....RR

Too sad

From the land of the Bluenose.....as a side issue fellows I think that that law would also in some way hurt tourism in the state. Hard to believe that they can get away with that.

I don't think Louisville cares about tourism. They throw off a good front but spend most of the money down on the water front. They put a fountain in the middle of the Ohio River thinking people would flock to see it. It didn't work and when the pipes rusted and they wanted to spend millions on fixing it. People down town said it was an eyesore and to let it go. Ice

? on the ban

Is the ban for all of Louisville? We may be playing a park in Lyndon that I was looking forward to detecting but if the ban is in effect there as well that puts a damper on my plans.

One thing to add

So sorry you're having trouble with MD'ing rules. Wish I could help. I do have one thing to add to what you take with you to your meeting, though. Sometimes pictures work more than words, since they don't take the time to read things like the code of ethics that we all abide by. You might take pictures of the dangerous items that you find and get rid of, like 6 inch nails, needles, sharp objects, etc., PLUS pic's of the hole's you dig, before and after, so that the "non-believer's" can see the neatness in our hobby, instead of them having a mindset of overall negativity about us. You might even point out that you could be saving the city liability suits on someone that could step on the trash that is left underground, and that we are helping them clean the parks, one pulltab at a time.
Good luck with your venture, and please keep us posted.

Sorry to hear all this happening in Ky.....
Also sorry that I can't print here what I'm thinkin'....

audrak--

Metal detecting isn't banned yet. A friend of mine I hunt with sent me an email that I posted here. I then called him and he explained what was going on which I posted earlier about the Dir. of Western Park Svcs who has run out several people I know because he said they can't be digging in the park. This one individual who ran him out twice and another fellow md was also run out twice of city parks. He is purposefully misinterpreting "The KY Antiquites Act" posted by Ky Shooter that is supposed to be about disturbing Indian burial places and artifacts. There is a Ky House Bill 295 that according to ICE is dead in committee which he posted a link. In Kentucky, just like in Georgia, there is no metal detecting in State Parks. Basically anything with a brown sign. They have signs posted in E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park that say this. The park you will play your ball game is called Hunter Drane Park right next to the Lyndon Post Office. I spent a lot of time hunting that park this summer when I should have been at the numerous other parks established since the late 1800's and early to mid 1900's. I pulled nothing but 201 clad coins, a 1999 rabies dog tag, junk ring, Buck pocket knife. No silver and no wheaties. The parks not old enough.

Happy Hunting
