May I ask a question please?

I don't care about finding new nickels but I'll still dig all nickel signals including the shallow ones. Reason is I don't want to miss a nice gold ring or other low conductor which will read in that same range. Plus, I like finding old nickels even though they have no real value after being in the ground. I've found V & Shield nickels at less than 3" deep in this hard GA clay. The older nickels and some gold jewelry can still be found in common hard hit places like parks due to the fact that a lot of detectorists have skipped over them in the past, discriminating them out to avoid pull tabs and other junk.

When I hunt woods, ill dig anything that gives me nickel numbers, 12-13 seems to almost always be a nickel, although sometimes its just the tab without the pull. Now when I get into trashy parks and ballfields ill only dig those signals if they are deeper than 3". Maybe not the best approach, and probably why I never see gold in the plug, but I do pretty well with old nickels using this method. If the numbers move too much, that's a good sign its garbage... Do I go out and dig every 3" nickel signal, Heck no!!! My back will thank me in 20 years

Your kidding right, You really dont take Dew out in public do you ????

Well Jerry I know that the Dew's is a bit to cultured for the normal hunter. But his sophistication and moral compass has added greatly to my abilities and skills in this hobby. To take it a bit farther his humble generosity is a complete joy to be around, he shares without regard to make any hunt as rewarding as possible. He shows respect among his peers despite how limited their knowledge may be. You do know of course that this man is an idol, a real super hero in this hobby......

Kidding aside, Dew's is a real friend and a great person just to be around. I am really looking forward to sharing an abundance of adventures with him and his son in the future. Trapper

Well said Trapper, he IS my hero. I hope when I grow up I can be just like him. Cant wait to see pictures of your finds and I know you will have a Great Hunt.

Digging nickel signals has added value to my experience in detecting. Last year I avoided these signals and I have no cool looking buffs to show for all my efforts in the old L.A. parks. Over the last couple of hunts, I added the nickel signals to my ears and I dug 10 of them and very few pulltabs. My machine gives a distinct nickel signal and it's pretty accurate. Hopefully, this year I will have several buffs or at least just one.

With my Tesoros in a park setting I dig anything from foil on up that sounds solid and repeatable. Lots of little gold rings hiding amongst those gum wrappers and foil drink seals. It just comes down to how much trash you can stand to dig!

If I'm hunting old coins I take my Explorer2,
and yes.......I dig nickels to find nickels.
May hope they are a ring but I'm fine with a nickel!

Specifically regarding the new Equinox but other examples are out there in abundance...WHY are people digging 3” nickels in parks? For the number of times you can get burned by junk, along with its lower value...WHY? I see videos of the Equinox and NICKELS. I get that it does well on nickels and lower conductors. But to specifically dig a nickel signal in hopes of finding a NICKEL? In a modern park or school at less than 6”?
Seriously?

Good post IDX-monster. I too scratch my head when someone comes on with machine evaluations for "how good they are at low conductors in the parks". I scratch my head and think:

Gee, what's the point ?? You can take ANY machine (even a cheapie bounty hunter, or beginner ACE 250) and go to ANY urban park. And simply turn your disc. dial down and ... presto : Dig low conductors till your arms fall off.

Sure, one of them will eventually be a nickel or a gold ring. But you hardly needed a machine that is "more sensitive to low conductors", when the parks are FULL of "low conductors", free-for-the-choosing.

Now perhaps on the wet salt beach, after storm erosion, then yes: It will help nab those dainty thin earings or whatever. But in turfed parks ? Sheesk

... I have no cool looking buffs to show for all my efforts in the old L.A. parks. .....

I agree with you here. I could certainly understand angling for gold jewelry. But as for Buffalos & V's, let's be perfectly honest: They will all be hosed from turfed parks. Ugly orange and brown corrosion, unless found in desert dry conditions. Versus silver which comes out like the day it was lost :) And also: A quick look at the coin book pages shows not many nickels are mostly numismatically common.

I love digging nickel signals and my explorer II is great at picking them out without digging much trash. And everyone around here seems to skip them. I'd say I probably dig 1 old nickel for every 10 new ones, the ratio of old to new is far better than any other denomination of coins. Both shield nickels I've dug were only about 4" deep and I've found Vs, buffs and war nickels at 3" or less. We've got pretty kind dirt here too so most of them are in decent shape for an old nickel. I just like finding coins, clad or not, and it's satisfying to dig nickels for some reason. I've found over 30 war nickels in the last 6 years so I'll keep digging those nickel signal regardless of depth.

I definitely have to be in the right mood to dig nickel signals lol. If I have cleaned an area out of any possible silver signals I often move on to nickel signals at that point.

I don't understand going out to dig clad in general. I won't ever pass on dimes on d quarters but to specifically go out to dig clad I personally don't have any want or need. I by no means am downing anyone for hunting it just not for me. Give me old coins, that is what I want.

I enjoy picking off a few silvers here and there but I have no problem shooting clad for a wile . They are good targets often can turn into rings .
I tumble my clad and buy silver with it . Therefore though I avoid zink pennies even a penny I find turns into silver . I have dug enough clad in the last 4 seasons to buy a gold double eagle . Like I said .. I buy silver with mine so every penny turns into treasure. And he'll ya I'll dig a nickel . Solid numbers and tone I'd say 9 out of 10 are going to be a nickel .

You say you don't understand digging clad ? You shoot silver ? Or relics ? For what we spend on hunting and gear you could buy 10 times the treasure we find from week to week . Last week o spent about 40 bucks in gas and stuff to find a Mercury dime and 41 cents . I could have stopped at the coin shop and got about 30 silver dimes for that . Lol. It's not about logic . It's about the hunt buddy 👍

I get that. I’m talking about digging nickels to find nickels.

This guy tunnels around a nickel like a 7 inch thick tree root for the silver dime that's a foot under it. 💪
Does he look like a guy who wants anything to do with a nickel?
I think Not !
He wears sunglasses because of the bright sudden flash of silver that deep hurts his eyes as in comes out of the caverns he digs .

The only use he has for foil is to wrap left over Cooked meat! And left overs do not happen .

I watched a video where a guy found 2 nickels that both locked on 13, so I'm thinking there is better ID stability, which probably means it is easier to avoid most tabs while digging nickels. Also, once when I was using a cheap Bounty Hunter it said nickel, but the "nickel" turned out to be 10k.

Geeez Dew, I always thought the Sunglasses was because he was digging under cover like James Bond. Your telling me that he digs a mine to get some shine and no glare. He tunnels the earth to avoid a five cent piece like a mole in a tulip garden, Wow! He sure pulled it over on me. Well Jerry I hope you can see all the valued wisdom this man has and his willingness to share. Trapper
