I haven't been all that interested, I have a F19.

But this video against the deus at least got me paying attention.

On the racer side of the video the meter says nail and the tone says penny. That is the same problem that got one of the first videos pulled early on. Re work the circuitry and get those two things together and things might start to look up.

Well I'll say it again, I've never been impressed with a nail test. Done too many myself to put any weight in them. First of all the real problem with rusted nails is because they have been in the ground for a long time and have leeched into the surrounding ground. A nail out of the ground isn't a problem. Second, you can make almost any detector do the find the coin in the nails trick. The detector that will do the best is the least stable and running on the edge of iron falsing.

Those videos really don't prove anything about how that detector will react in the wild on a rusted nail that has been in the ground for years. That is done in the wild and live.

Now honestly, what are the top popular detectors? They got that way by out performing the competition.

Yes and I'm not sure what your point is? Some detectors run at the edge of stability as the default, I point to the Fishers and Deus as examples, and that is great for most relic hunting. It is a nightmare in a trashy park. Some people call it being "chatty" but it comes from the detector set to a high sensitivity with factory default setting. Some factory set machines are very conservative, Whites for example, and are very stable and take some adjusting to achieve maximum sensitivity and depth. Some are set very aggressive, Fishers for example, and tend to be very noisy even in the factory default. The upside is they are also more sensitive and deeper, but have less room to improve that sensitivity.

Most people get the AT pro because its waterproof , unless the racer is waterproof I dont expect it to cut into AT pro sales very much. Though except for the waterproof feature of the pro its fairly average for a mid range detector and it probably wouldnt take much to beat it in some categories.

Observing the vids and chit chat, It seems the racers strong points are simplicity of operation, excellent seperator, and handles bad soil well. It may save me from buying a Minelab and Deus. Save me a few $$ as well.

Watching some of the Bill Ladd videos on the Racer look interesting. Could it be possible for a newer detector to be really worth it? Correctly IDing a quarter at 10" in the wet/salt/black sand beach?

Again I say I hope you're right. I'm hoping I can get my hands on one before long to put it to the test I would like to see it meet. I can make any detector with the proper adjustments do that nail test. Not impressed. Put those same nails in the ground for 50 years with a coin next to it and then run the same test. Then I'll be impressed if it finds the coin. Till then the nail test is no different than doing an air test and claiming that is what you get in the ground.

You get one, see how it does against the V3i in deep silver in heavy iron, etc.

No it is not a question of if you're right because you are just repeating what you're heard. The question falls on the tester's. You believe them blindly I do not. I may not be a famous tester, but I have been around long enough to know they never call a POS a POS even if it is. That is why they get chosen as tester's. They always point out what they like and avoid commenting on the bad. Yes, they might make a few passing hints of something they don't like, but they generally will not say it like that but more like "I personally don't care for the blah blah but that's just me" type comment.

I've seen far too many detectors given a good pre-release by "reputable tester's" only to find out it is a POS with problems. I put my review value on the end user like you and I who aren't obligated to review with a light hand. I want to hear from the people in the field. I have yet to see a single review from one of the tester's that says it is all that hype says it is. The closets was Monte's remark about being the "best in heavy iron he has ever used" and even that leaves much to be questioned.

For me it is a lot about the stuff I see posted about TTF on the E-Trac. To read the posts you'd think it was the greatest thing since sliced pie, and it probably is for shallow iron. Absolutely worthless to me. Where I need it the iron is deep and fools TTF. Of course you won't read about that even from those famous people.
