How Many People Coin Roll Hunt?

Dimes is around 2 boxes to find 1 silver (avg.) fast way to hunt out the silver is look at the edges silver is white and copper is not.

I'm going to Vega$ Thursday evening. My cheap-o entertainment is to get a bunch ($100) of half dollars (10 rolls) from a cashier, go through them, and then return them to the casino cashier for redemption, minus any silver ones. Never did good there, if I can get 1 40% for every $150(300 coins) I consider myself lucky. Alas, most casinos are TITO (ticket in/ticket out) so no coins involved. Limits where I can do half dollar searches

Ironic

Wish I had seen this before I cashed in over a thousand bucks in spare change. I've been saving all my spare change for over 4 years. But I needed the money to buy a couple of MD's so I've been rolling them and depositing it in the bank. Now I wish I had gone thru em first.

Wow! THAT's IRONIC! Some of us go all year MD'ing without finding a single piece of silver coin. The odds are you had a few silvers in the coin you cashed in to buy a MD that you will use to hunt silver coins... Funny...

From time to time I get rolls of pennies to go through. On a rainy day it gives me something to do and last week I got 10 rolls. One roll had only 97 pennies but it also had a clad dime and 2 wheats, a 1926 and a 1944. That's about the best I've done. Think I'll try nickles next time.

Went through 1,600 halves in Vegas. 2, 40% and a 1943 Australian Penny that came from a slot machine LOL.

Back to losing $$ in Vegas now

Try to get the rolls that people have cashed in. Not the packaged rolls from the mint.

The Mint doesn't roll coins anymore...Not since 1998 or so. It is done by counting companies. Their contracts do not allow them to pull the good stuff out anymore the way they used to in the past so they are definitely worth looking through.

The fact is that some of the best hits on silver come from the boxed half dollars shipped in to the banks by Brinks, for example.

Forget about dimes and quarters. Go for the halves:-)

Oh Yeah... I look through rolls:-)

Have Fun,
Bill

PS: You have to look for more than silver and older cents:-) The die varieties that are out there would knock your socks off. Most people involved even a little with coins have heard of coins like the 1983 Doubled Die Reverse cent but did you know that there are 6 or 7 Doubled Die Obverse Varieties on 1983 cents with some being worth $100.00 or more each:-) ?

do you think that calling banks and asking if they have noticed any older coins is a good idea

The way to do this is to ask if they have any half dollars or larger sized dollar rolls to get rid of. They love getting those out of their inventory.

The trick though is to use more than one bank. If you dump the coins at the same bank you take them from, they get pretty tired of it after awhile.

Have Fun,
Bill

If I started looking thru that many coins, my eyes would end up like these........................

I used to do that when I was a kid. My Dad would go to the local banks during the week and we would go through them over the weekend. I hated rerolling them. That always seemed to be my job. lol! We did find quiet a few goodies. I just had no idea that you could still find goodies today! But, since you've managed to talk me into it, I now know what I am going to do the next time I go to the bank! Hope I don't cut into your finds:lol::lol:

I'll get a fiver worth of pennies once in a while, but silver seems like a lost cause nowadays. I'll have to try the halves. I've had decent luck with pennies, I'll usually come out with a couple of wheats from $5, maybe a dime or two mixed in as well.

Haven't roll hunted for a lot of years. Since my college days, 1974. But I do have a good story from then. I would buy a $500 bag of half dollars from a bank, take them to my car go through them, keep the 7 -10 silver half's you'd get in a bag, replace them and drive to the next bank. I was in the Salt Lake City area and there were lots of banks to go to. Did fairly well until I went into a small bank in Lehi, Utah. Asked the cashier for $500 in half dollars, she said they didn't have that amount. I started to leave and another cashier said there was a bag in the back of the vault. She got it for me, I paid for it and went out to my car. I opened the first roll - all silver 1964 halfs. Then the next, and the next... every one was the same 1964 silver half dollars. Sold the whole bag to a local coin dealer and was very happy.

CRH tips

So how many of you do it? I CRH on occasion.

What is your favorite type of coin rolls to hunt? Halves due to chance of silver

What have you found? Found quite a few wheatbacks, one buffalo, silver war nickels, Franklin halves, 1964 Kennedy's, 1965-69 Kennedys.

Some general tips for beginers? Stick to one kind of coin, try different banks. Look for machine wrapped rolls. I've had the best luck with the machine wrapped rolls in white paper. Occasionally though you end up with brand new BU coin rolls.

I went to a local bank and ordered two boxes of halves. After I went through them. I found 6 rolls of 90% silver. dates from the late 30's to 1964. Then 4 rolls of 40% silver. had two coins from Panama.
Then the fun begins, I spend the ones I do not keep, when I go on vacation. Some people do not know what they are and that's the fun of spending them.<:)
Have fun searching rolls.
