How Many People Coin Roll Hunt?

I coin roll hunt very frequently and find it a worth hobby.
Each week I go through about:
$2000 in halves
$2,000 in dimes
$500 in nickels
$500 in pennies

I do not do this alone, but have one other person I coinroll hunt with. Although this may seem like a lot to look through, we have perfected a system of opening and probably only spend two-four hours a week doing this when it is dark out.

We have been coinroll hunting probably 9 months and this is what I estimate our finds to be:

Wheats: 3,000 keepers+ (about 10 wheats per box)
Indian Heads-10+ keepers
Wartime Nickels-150+ keepers (usually at least one per box)
Buffalo Nickels- 40+ keepers
V Nickels-6 keepers
Rosies-150+ keepers (about one per box)
Mercuries 8 keepers
Quarters-2 keepers (not worth purchasing)
Halves:
140+ 40% silver half dollars
60+ 90% Kennedy half dollars (42 in one box kind of inflates the number)
10 Franklin Half Dollars
4 Walking Liberty Half Dollars
We also find plenty of proof, foreign, and commemorative coins as well

This is a great hobby if you have spare time at night or are looking for something to do on a rainy day.

Good luck coinroll hunting if you decide to give it a go

when i first started i got 10dollars pennies and 10 nickels found about 2to 3 keepers in every roll of nickels and one wheatie for ever 2 rolls
know my finds have been slowly drying up got 15 dollars pennies and only got 1 wheat for every 4 or 5 rolls and got 12 dollars in nickels and got only 1 keeper a 1940d

A slight variation....

My brother in law tosses all his change into coffiee cans. about evry two months me and the kids go through them before taking them to the bank. for every 1000 coins we get about 5 wheats and 1 silver dime.

I havent had much luck with regular coin searching...except the summer of 1973. Me and a friend used to go to the bank with about five bucks and get rolls of pennies to search. Back then evry roll had a couple of wheats. After a while the courious bank teller asked what we were doing and when we told her she started saving ALL the wheats and most of the silver and rolling them for us. We had to steal money from our mothers purses just to come in once a week and make the exchange.. cash for pure rolls of wheat!!!!!

what are my chances of finding a 1950d in a roll of nickels
have any of you found one
and about how many rolls would i have to search to find one

thanks

That is so cool. What a nice teller. You do not see that anymore.

i always check out my coins at the end of the hunt. for me that means looking at only 4 or 5 coins to 100. it only takes a min or two and that way i don't have to worry whether or not i've missed something good. once looked at i throw em in the barrel with past finds. can't imagine sitting down and looking thru a thousand bucks worth of coins before casing them in. i'm too "type a" for that.

do you think that calling banks and asking if they have noticed any older coins is a good idea

out of maybe, $100 worth of halves I have found 4 silvers
(2 franklins, 2 1964's) out of about $2 worth of pennies, around 3 wheats, I think thats some good averaging, I also found a proof Anthony, I know it's proof because of the filled S difference.

Ive done it a couple times when i had some spare time. Out of 25 rolls of pennies i got three wheaties 1955, 1945, 1958, and a 1963 canadian penny. i also kept all the 200 and something coppers. Then i purchased $20 worth of quarters and only got 2 biscentenials.

Winter is coin roll hunting time. My all time best was 649 wheats in 1 $25 box. I went back the next day to get 2 more boxes and nothing. My next highest is 24 wheats in one box. Goes to show feast to famine. I average about 10-12 per box but have gotten as few as 4. Keep in mind I do not include when I get a box of new coins (this sucks when it happens). I have over 6k wheats. About 800 from detecting. I stopped hunting dimes and quaters because it is more expensive to maintain inventory of boxes. Wheats are fun because there are just so many. Best one found is a 1909 VDB. No S. It was in pretty good shape. No 1955 doubles yet but I hope. I have found a couple of indians, I get 1 every 20 boxes or so. If it is a cold weekend I will hit 6 or 7 banks to get 1 box from each. If you get more they complain. I keep commercial accounts at 2 differant banks so in 3 towns I can get a bunch of boxes. Always washyour hands after you search and do not eat while hunting. These pennies are filthy. Goodluck!

I decided to try this the other day..bought 4 rolls of pennies,4 rolls of quarters,4 rolls of dimes and 4 rolls of halfs...not one silver coin or wheat.
i gave the halves to my daughter..she has never seen one and thought they where the coolest things ever.

can't see why I couldn't get a good teller, my grandpa told the teller he gets all the time that he is looking for coins for his grandson, so a few days ago, she gives him 6 IKE's! I didn't think it was possible to find large size dollars in circulation. The dollars were 1974, 1974-D, 1972, 1972-D, 1976, and 1978-D.

Cool. If you want to find silver you have to get A LOT of rolls. I got $100 in dimes and not one silver. Nickels are a good middle ground.

I took a stab at CRH

Decided to give this shot yesterday.

First, went down to my bank. They were really nice. No boxed coins but told me I could bring all stuff back loose to her. She would have a it counted and credit my account. Finally, she said she would order anything I wanted and it would only take one day.

I then ran around town asking for boxes of pennies and nickels. I also asked if they had any rolls of halves. You would have thought I was running around begging crack rocks.

In the end, one woman sold me a box of pennies consisting of those brought in by customers and about 16 rolls of nickels. She also let me dig through all the half dollars for the tellers.

A second teller sold me a box of pennies but I had to work her hard.

First here's the take:

Half Dollars

64 Kennedy
66 Kennedy 40% er

Nickels

1938 - Oogly
1941 - Semi Oogly
1945 S Worn

Wheaties

8 total. 40's and 50's.

Others

4 Canadians

A center punched penny which I will post a picture of this evening.

Now here's the kicker. 1/2 the coins I got were obviously turned in by an MD'er. They were nasty looking.

I'm going to try a couple of more rounds for the heck of it. I really enjoyed digging through them.

Just need to decide if I'm going to pull all of the 81 and prior Lincolns.

Better chance of Angelina Jolie AND Brad Pitt both asking you to marry them.

I'm new to collecting and CRH, but from what I have read, there has only been one documented case of a CRH 'er finding a 50D. I think it was back in 2005/06.

You can add the 38D and 38S to that as well. There are whole lot of people that are three coins short of completing their Jefferson sets.

No I don't coin roll hunt....but you guys are doing a good job of talking me into it.

coin roll hunting

I have went through almost $15,000 in coin hunting this year. Last year I made $2800.00 in coin sales from what I found coinroll hunting. Find old banks go in and ask them if they have any halfs you can buy ,old small town banks can be a jack pot. One bank i went to on a sat. told me they have a bag of halfs in the vault how many do i want, LOL i said ALL of them,I walked out with $164.00 in 90% halfs and 4 clads. REMEMBER OLD BANKS. I drove for fedex for 8yrs I found a lot of old banks. New banks I buy pennys find around 5 or 6 wheatys in a box of $25.00. O" ya find a bank that will take the coins you dont need and will not charge 6-8%. I found one they told me they hadnt ordered change for about 6 months because I keep them stocked the silver is out there its just really thining out in the last few yrs, but some kid will find dads stash off coins and go buy candy, lol. It happined to a freind of mine. (Great thing to do when the snow is deep) and you cant md.
