Fisher F5

Went out today and along with all the normal cr*p (not pictured), I pulled my first silver of the year from the ground. A worn but nice 43 Washington Quarter! Given the harsh weather this year so far, I've only been out a handful of times so this bodes well for the summer! I'm stoked :D

Congrats on your first silver of the year! What coil were you useing? How deep was your silver and what VDI readings where you registering?

Thanks,
John

Nice quarter find P. I hunted for about 2 hours today, not much luck. Bet I dug what I thought were perfect dime and quarter signals a dozen times, but turned out to be small can lids. Pretty much figured it when I dug about 7 inches, found nothing, but a loud tone, digging further found small can lids.

I put my smaller 8 inch on due to all the trash, but a lil frustrating with the depth it gets. Certainly getting better depth with my Vaq.

Doesn't rain tomorrow man said I could come hunt the plantation I found....

little trick is when you you pinpoint you can tell how big the target is with practice and also if it says 2-3 inches down raise your coil about a foot above the ground and swing if it still goes off its a can,but when it says 2-3 inches use your propointer to zero in on your target if it barley beeps its probably a coin here is what i get on coins

zinc penny-60
copper penny-70-71
dime-70-73
quarter-80-83
canslaw-55-75
anything else you have question about
i use the 9.5x5 3/4 coil
use zero dic,but not on all metal, with 3rd tone and listen for high tone,my ground mineral is about 80 everywhere i go
good luck

Thanks! I'm using the 11"DD coil and the coin rang up nice and loud at 5" with a solid 86 on the VDI

Yea, I do that for clues, problem I'm having is those small vienna weenie can lids seem to be a mainstay at this park that act somewhat like a quarter/50 cent piece. I finally notched out 50cent line. This area is so trashy I have to discrim to foil and even then lots of chatter. I hate turning gain down, really kills the depth IMO.

I have pics of the hill/old shoreline from 1908 with about 1000 people, but couldn't find anything old here. As I was leaving an old man that played in the park when he was a kid told me they scraped all the dirt in the 50's off the hill when making the near ballfield. He said they dumped in all in the woods beside the park, even walked me and showed me. You can see large dirt hills that don't belong, course somewhat grown over. I was tired, but hunted a lil and found a one dime and a few wheats, an old shoe...Least I know where to hunt now.

thanks for all the info parallax and potato head!:secret: the more info i can get before i get out for the first time is all for the better! armistead sounds like you found some good dirt :detector:. keep posting outing's and all the great info fella's!

thanks,
john

more help please?????????

hey guys... what techniques do you have! example: what do you do when your detecting and you come across a deep faint signal that sounds high and smooth? how about setting up your discrimination, gain, and threshold for a park thats been hit before? would i set it up for maximum depth? and why?:?:

i know i want a lot of info.... but i just want to have a good understanding about how the machine works. how to set up the machine for certain situations. whats the best setup for seeking silver and so one... feel free to open the flood gates of info:stormy:

i know you have been giving great info everyone, i just want more please. can never ask enough Q's.

thanks for your time and help, HH....john

John, I had a fairly extensive document detailing advice on how to get the most out of the F5. I'm on the train home from work right now but I'll see if I still have it on my pc later. If I have I'll see if I can host it online somewhere & then post a link

Cheers
Dan

If trashy, I run my gain about 80, thresh on 0. If not trashy, I hunt in all metals and watch the ID, lot more depth.

f5 hunting trip (2hours)

hunting a park and my buddys house for 2 hours, found 1.30 and a wheaty
1951 d in bad shape, thats number 5 wheaty at his house, still the nortorius silver eludes me i have finding the old coins in his drivway ,the ground is sso hard need a jackhammer, but still think there has got to be silver there in the drivway,i search in the yard and the 1970's pennies are 8 inches deep, but the wheaties i have found in the driveway are about 3 inches so i think that they have never graded the driveway before. the house was built in 1926,come on silver, dug over 1200 holes since november in the winter months,so lots more diggen for me ,the odds are the silver is getting close,
that wheaty rang up as 65 with 80 mineralization ,good luck all
love the f5
was using all metal mode

Got out finally...went to a park just down.the road and managed 0.70 in clad. Found a rifle shell casing also and some usual beaver tails. Olny a part of the park had grass showing and even most of that I could only dig 2 to 3 inches before hitting frozen ground! I'm happy I got out after waiting forever it seemed. 50's in the forcast so ill be able to go out more!

I'm wondering if the numbers usually jump all over the place when the coil isn't swingin and when I start swingin they calm down??? Normal or what....help greatly appriciated

Thanks,
John

power lines or ground balance off no disc turn it to about 20 or so with gain at 80 and threash at -3 try that

I noticed that my phase was changing alot . I tried to keep the numbers close but it wasn't all the time. And there was power lines almost above me. Thanks for the help potato head! Ill try that tommorow and try a park that doesn't have power lines near me

Thanks,
John

What would a (silver dime) let's say 5 inches deep read on the vdi? And will it sound like a quarted or dime (clad)? In disc. D4 tones? It will sound high right? Info greatly appriciated

Thanks,
John

i am not sure never found silver in the ground, but i have done air test on silver that i have bought and the vdi is 2-4 higher then clad

I dug a Rosie back in December which was about 4" or 5" down. Rang up mid 70s on the VDI and was a nice high tone on 4.

Try changing the frequency if you get chatter near the power lines - sometimes that helps. Just remember to ground balance in disc mode each time you change freq.
