Fill your holes on the beach PLEASE

13 years and by the way the kids love to play in the holes i dig for them
NEVER had 1 problem with any of my holes,, enjoy your day
and go find the GOLD just put the coil over it...

Other than the clueless noobies I've always assumed the that detectorists that don't fill their holes are the same guys that throw their fast food wrappers out their window, empty their ashtrays in the parking lots and toss beer cans in the lake. Am I correct? :?:

If nothing else, this thread reminds me that there are a lot of people who think like I do and make an effort to fill the holes that they dig. The argument that children dig holes on the beach doesn't make sense for a number of reasons but, yes, those holes are also hazardous so why add hundreds more? Also, the holes that detectorists leave are unsightly as are the big mounds of sand beside them. It's embarrassing to hunt behind someone who leaves a mess and have people think that you're the one who did it!

This is so simple to me.
IF YOU MAKE A HOLE, THEN FILL YOUR HOLE!!
It doesn't matter whether your are on the beach or land.
If you love this hobby then be respectful to others, if you don't love the hobby then go do something else and stop making the rest of us look bad!

Your on to something right there :goodone:

"Leave No Trace" applies here. As in leave something better than you found it. Filling holes anywhere you hunt should be common sense to the detectorist community. Even when hunting in the woods, which isn't very often, I fill the holes. I can sort of see not filling holes near the waterline (since the water will do it eventually), but even then it only takes a few seconds to do it so why not do it. Heck, it doesn't even hurt to do a general police call of the area during, and after, your hunt wherever you go. I always pick up the random trash I see along my path while detecting (and walking to and from the truck). You don't have to go out of your way and get all the trash, just what's in front of you will suffice. I even carry a separate plastic grocery bag to put it in along with the junk found in holes. Easy to empty periodically in a big trash can or toss in the back of the truck and dispose of when I get home. People watch us when we are detecting, more so than one might think. I know I notice people when they are out swinging a detector; not because I detect, but because it isn't all that common to see. Ours isn't a huge community in any area, so when we are out, we ARE noticed. With being watched comes the potential to be scrutinized. With to much negative scrutiny come the BS laws that makes it illegal to enjoy our hobby in public areas. A little positive effort on behalf of detectorist's will keep the law off our back, the public out of our faces, and the ability to hunt public lands legal and free.

I get disgusted with people that dont fill their holes at the beach. I watch as runners and walkers have to step from side to side to bypass the holes. They have to walk/run with their heads down, not being able to enjoy the beautiful scenery around them. Why? Because someone decided it was ok to spend 2 minutes digging up the hole, but cant spend 2 seconds to fill it back in.

I agree that this applies no matter where you hunt. This is the motto that most, if not all, of us preach. With me at least, it isn't even cosidered "common sense" and/or "second nature" to fill the hole back in... I don't know how else to explain it other than it just simply gets done after I retrieve the object or leave in defeat. Either way, the hole gets covered back up. Quick story, I was wet sand hunting one time with the ACE250 and found a quarter in one spot, a dime in another, and then... well, I ended up digging roughly 7in down... maybe more... and a fairly wide hole... I never found the object and chalked it up as a false signal knowing the ACE isn't the best when it comes to wet salt sand beach hunting. The point is is that I filled the hole back in and it took maybe 5-10sec, at best, to fill back in. Then moved on. I don't know other than, yes, people do notice us because we stick out like a sore thumb because we are not your "normal" typical person just cruising the beach. I also agree that they do watch us and notice/observe what we're doing and how we leave it. We're a mystical bunch to other people when it comes down to it. Anyways...

HH \_ people

Just remember the 1 percenters who ruin it for everyone down the road:no: Around here the local beach goers take notes. Usually you got some old retiree's who pick up trash. Had one watch me to make sure I filled my hole and took my trash. He actually told me the guy next to me down the beach was throwing his trash on the ground and not covering his holes. I find it odd anyone would not fill a hole in. I guess they are the ones who pull a stump from the yard and leave a deep hole. I'm being sarcastic of course because they'd fill that hole but leave one for someone else as long as it wasn't on their property. Forrest Gump said "Stupid is as stupid does!" I think we need to hand out a stupid award at the end of the year;)

c'mon

C'mon, Vegas...remember the rules we impose on ourselves. Get permission, take out the trash, fill in your holes, no matter where you are. Remember we are all ambassadors for the hobby. Don't be so insensitive and selfish. Or get another hobby.

Today I was hunting the waterline finding dozens of rusty nails. First of all I have NEVER found so doggone many nails there and they were spread along a line parallel to the surf. They were spread over an area of about 3-400 yards. Curious.

Anyway a couple came up to me while I was capturing another rusty mini spike and were asking me some general questions about local detecting as the husband apparently does some minor hunting wherever it is they actually live. I showed them the nail and then dropped it into my pouch with the rest of its chums and then casually starting dragging the sand back into the hole with my scoop and foot.

They were shocked. The husband asked me why I was doing that and I told him I didn't understand the question. He told me frankly that he doesn't own a pouch because he doesn't haul away ANY trash. He said if he doesn't want to keep whatever he digs up he drops it right back on the ground. Furthermore he doesn't fill any holes "because that's how he knows where he has hunted". I just looked at him as I tried to digest this information. I got real blunt with him and told him then in my opinion he was "a piss-poor detector" and I would never welcome him to hunt with me. I told him about the MDing creed that this forum embraces and he told me that it was a bunch of !!!!. He believes if it wasn't his junk then he's not obligated to haul it away.

Now I probably wasn't the best ambassador for the Florida Tourist Industry as I made a few comments I will not repeat here but I believe I firmly made my point. I went one way and he went the opposite. Hopefully he will take his next vacation somewhere else.

Was Vegas in town?

Just wondering how everyone actually fills in there holes? Side sweep with foot or use your scoop? I'm using a TDI so some of those holes are massive.

I see more people leaving their trash they dig the leaving holes when I visit the beach. I sat and watched a guy for 10 minutes just to make sure before I said something to him. He told me it wasn't his trash he doesn't want it.

Interesting thing to point out next time is that once a person picks up trash, and then they throw it down again, it IS their trash. Hey can certainly be ticketed for doing it...

In most places, anyway...

Really?.... How lazy can you get?

Do you take the dishes out of the sink before you pee in it?
LOL jeez I actually busted out laughing hard on that one.
Umm no what are you nuts why would you remove the plates a little acidic urine never hurt any of my family..adds flavor right?

As far as beach holes..come on that's just asking for people to point the finger at us. They already complain enough why add to it. You might as well beach detect in a mankini with some of your man parts showing and sing I'm a little teapot..why bring trouble down upon the hobby

I've got mixed feelings about filling in holes at the beaches although I still do it. I'm not all meticulous about it though, just enough to make the hole not dangerous anymore.

Lots of people dig here, mostly the kids and adults playing with their shovels and they never fill them in. And as for the worry about people hurting themselves in the holes.. I feel the same way about that as I do when my sister sits in the toilet because I left the toilet seat up... LOOK before you sit down sis!! and the people that walk on the beach without looking where they are walking are asking for it.

But still, I follow the metal detecting etiquette to make sure we don't get a bad rep. but somewhat grudgingly since the areas I detect will get smoothed out after a while.

Check this out - what I saw yesterday..

I title this one: "I didn't do it!"

At Beaches we can be a little less careful.. but in other areas I say leave it exactly as you found it or better.

Regards

I do the side sweep but it's starting to hurt my joints a lot.. Nowadays I fill it in just good enough so it's not dangerous.. I wonder just how meticulous some people get about filling in their beach holes? Do they break out their sculpting shovels and smooth it out like frosting a cake to perfection? :hornetsnest:

I forgot to mention I use a TDI Pro also...
