I live in CT but family has a couple homes and bunch of land in Greene Cty. Town of Catskill to be exact. I'd love to do some hunting up there if someone puts something together.

Let me see if I can get permission for you to come to the 40's dump site in Clinton. The same property has been around since early 1800's and a few hand forged horse shoe nails were found. It's a small clue to other items from 1800's being there :)
 
Lunchtime Silver and Gold.... and Copper and Lead

Had my usual 37 minutes to detect during lunch and it was great! For a period of time I have been working the jewelers estate and now I am trying to hit previously hit areas at different angles. Today I happened to recover a nice gold ring, a 1917 Mercury dime, two wheat pennies and a three ring bullet

One hole... Three Mercury Dimes

Had a good lunch time hunt today. I was using a small coil and searching the parkland near my job during lunch for a section that would yield some older finds when I came across these beauties ... I can't believe they have been missed by other detectorists all of these years.... They are a 1919 S 1917 and 1920....

An untouched foundation gives up some goods

A friend of mine had mentioned that she owns quite a few acres of land over in Ulster county and when I asked her if there are any foundations on it she said yes, and that I was more than welcome to detect it! So, this past Saturday I was there detecting for a while. The foundations on her land appear to line up fairly well with some of the homesteads I found on old maps, so I am guessing they date to the mid 19th century since that is when the map were drawn up. I was only there a few minutes when I found the crotal bell and the powder flask, in what appears to be the dump area since there was pottery, shards and a nice bromo selzter bottle laying right on the surface, but of course there was also lots of iron. While there I was also able to find not one but two 1893 Indian head cents. The funny thing is that they were not even found together so it is a funny coincidence to find two of the same year. Besides that there was the usual harmonica reeds, some bullets, and lots of junk. There is still a large area of land to cover so I will definitely be back on a day that is not so hot and muggy...

My bit of advice for the day to find places to detect is to talk about our hobby to others.
I have been the recipient of numerous leads and places to hunt by just mentioning that I was out treasure hunting over the weekend, during lunch, while on vacation, etc. Just be ready for the first question that everyone asks " So whats the best or most valuable thing you have found?"

I haven't been able to detect as much as I would like to since I have the new baby.
I just received my replacement CTX 3030 after the first ended up having an issue.
Anyone up for some detecting on Sunday or next week some time?
 
Hello All, DirtSurgeon over here in Middletown. Its nice to see a lot of activity here in the Hudson Valley. I've been detecting for about 4 years now. Started with an Ace 250. That paid for itself, a propointer, and a couple extra coils. I'm now using an AT Pro and I love the thing. If I leave the house without it, things just don't feel right.. I use my Ace as a backup with the sniper coil for trashy areas. I work a really crazy shift ( 12 hr nightshift, 3 days on, three days off), I'm Married with two kids, (Congrats on the new baby GKMan), so its really hard for me to plan hunts. I'm usually an early morning hunter, spur of the moment after work. It would be cool if somehow we could set up a Hudson Valley Detectors Club. I'm sure a lot would come out of the woodwork. I usually don't post much because I'm too busy working or 'tectin. You guys probably wouldn't believe some of the great finds I have made... but thats another post. I've been to the Fishkill side of the river a couple times with decent results. It would be cool to hook up with some of you someday. I'll try and check in more.

CTX Stream Hunting

Been so busy with the baby that I haven't had the time to be out detecting as much as I used to. I have been finding some silver here and there but nothing much exciting. Today, I went out to a stream that has been low due to a lack of rain and the dam being in poor condition letting most of the water through it instead of over it. I had recently received permission from the property owner to detect and it was cool and fun detecting in the water.

I retrieved many items from the water including a bunch of modern and antique fishing sinkers, some lures, a neat old lock, wheat cents, modern cents, and a large head cent, a penny that had been squished on railroad tracks and about a hundred bullets that hadn't been fired. I found all the bullets in a depression in the stone in the middle of the stream. My father had the idea that they had been thrown there in a bag and that the bag had rotted away over time leaving just the pile behind. Using the CTX without waterproof headphones and the wireless module attached to the Uniprobe headphone bracket I am able to get down about four feet. After that I would need to be scuba diving and/or have waterproof headphones and goggles.

I look forward to getting out hunting soon with some of you...

Back to the stream site large cent recovered

Went back to the stream site from my previous post and I was able to recover a large cent dated 181? It was so encrusted with this hard material that I had to use electrolysis to get most of it off. If I try to clean it any more I will totally destroy the coin so I will have to live with it. Considering it went from completely unreadable to being able to see a date, read the words and see some detail I can not complain.
