Dog attack what do you do?

Back in the 70's and 80's, in rural farming/ranching communities, if you saw a dog running wild and unattended where it didnt belong, you were supposed to shoot it! It was right in the game rules and everything! Lots of abandoned dogs back then come to think about it...roaming wild and forming packs...:.
Mud you should see the street corners in Bangkok.. a sight to behold

Don't turn your back, and don't run. Dogs work on a bluff system most of the time. Years ago I was working in the El Paso Texas area, one day we had to deliver the computers for a cell phone tower, it was myself and two hispanics. We got out of the truck and the neighbor's Rottweiller jumps the chainlink yard fence and starts growling/barking and running towards us. I hear the doors on the truck slam, I looked back and the two mexicans are sitting in the truck. So I just charged the dog yelling and scooping up rocks as I went, chucking them at him. He turned tail and ran back to the yard and jumped the fence. The rest of the time we were there he barked at us through the fence. When I came back the mexicans were still laughing. And the one that spoke english said he'd never seen anything like it.

I carry a gun and a shovel.. In case of emergency. :D

Nothing missing, although this was back in the late 70's. If you shoot someone's dog, you are shooting someone's family member. Be prepared for repercussion.

No, something is very off with that story. Nearly everywhere, dogs are legally property, not family. Not only that, but if the guys was acting in defense of his son, that is clearly and legally justifiable.

Of course, that doesn't mean that if the law wants to come for you, they can find a reason.

Well, it looks like I didn't remember all the details. I spoke with my father, who refreshed my memory. This man's son had tame rabbits in the back yard. Two dogs came from the neighbors property down the way, into the yard chasing the boy into the house. The boy's father called the neighbor, who did nothing. The dogs came back later, still the neighbor did nothing. Later on, one of the dogs was found shot dead in a field nearby. Police came to a job site and arrested my father's business partner, and took him to jail, without proof that the guy had even shot the dog. The man was beat up while in jail over night, and later hired an attorney. The dog owner must have had a better lawyer, the entire thing was a raw deal. Like I mentioned, this was over 30 years ago, but my dad has a great memory even at 82 years old.

I agree wasp and hornet spray. It can shoot over 20 feet, meant to reach nests on house roofs/overhangs.

Smith and Wesson keeps me nice and warm. Hunting. I also carry a small shovel that I don’t use in parks, but it’s sharp and light so a well placed swing or thrust to a dog might make it think twice.

Shoots my dog , better have their arrangements pre- made , and next of kin notified :realitycheck: THEY ARE FAMILY That being said, pepper spray , they will survive . All owner's are responsible for watching there pets, for those who let them loose to roam, is neglect, however my dog did get out though my gate once, accident's do happen, Keep in mind ALL dog's are not aggressive, my Chessie kissed the mail woman Saturday, put his paws on the window frame, she bent over and :p:p:p , made her day, but i was left out  happy hunting everyone , Earl

I had a close call with a Doberman Pinscher while I was in a open field the other day.
Is there something that a person can carry to spray at a charging dog. What is a person to do?

I would think you would have what you need with you..a shovel, scoop, or knife like tool. I used to read electric meters years ago and had to constantly deal with dogs. Stand your ground and NEVER turn and run. Dont make any quick movements. Back away slowly. Now if it lunges at you all bets are off...its you or the dog. Use one of your tools and put it down.

I've been bitten at least a half dozen times in my line of work. Kind of ironic though, I was bitten by the mail lady's dog, she lived down the street from me, her dog got out and terrorized a garbage sale going on. I was at the wrong place...bit me on the calf.

Basically dog's are territorial in most cases , so if your in, the profession Mail Man, Fedex Man, UPS man which i was , Meter reading man , and the list goes on, from time to time, you can run into a aggressive dog, in a 9 year package car span, i was never bit , were i used to live the owner up the street had her pit bull turn on her , and bit her arm up, I had 2 Rottweiler's father , and son, very territorial both died at 11 years old, not pointing breed's out here, because just because they are a Pit,Rott, Dob, ect., doesn;t mean they all react the same, it has a lot to do with the Owner raising the pet, him training the pet, if the owner is in control at the time you greet the pet, if you know the pet, it also has a lot to do with you correcting your pet, when he is wrong, CBR's are stubborn, but very smart , and loyal dog's, by far the best dog i have had in my life, he is about 120 lbs solid muscle, with a keen nose, and hearing, but loves people and kids big -small, I take him Metal Detecting, not for protection, however he let's me know if anyone is approaching within a 60 yards, with headphones on detecting 4 eyes are better than 2 while detecting, during the dogs off beach time , he won't get to go :( , Shogun enjoy's the beach, he was swimming all winter in the ocean here, I take him in Lowes , and BJS down here , everyone loves him, i am still training him on greeting other dog's, after a large breed poodle sniffed than got aggressive to him , she was a female , must have been her time of the month  , but ever since he has been Leary to other dog's, Cats forget it, if a Cat is in his territory he will chase the cat off property, were i used to live, my neighbors cat kept coming on my property , i had a fenced in yard, i warned my neighbor several times, than one night i let Shogun out herd the fight happen while i was getting a drink, one neighbor said Shogun was shaking the cat like a rag doll, my neighbor finally listened to me , as her cat was bleeding two weeks from the a--, she said she won't be letting her cat go out anymore , that's one issue that a lot of cat owner's won't do, is keep there cat's at bay, i had several cats running my old street, and Shogun had a battle just keeping them out of my yard, as the Neighbor had 4 cats , some on and off in heat . Understanding dog's , has a lot to do with it , yes protecting yourself is the upmost importance when , or if it ever happen's, but over reacting as to Stab, shoot, mane , a dog is not in my book. Pepper spray for all those guy's that battle this subject all the time , with your shovel keeping them back while spraying is all that's needed, it's the Owner's fault, that this happen's, don't take it out on the dog !!! Happy safe Hunting , Earl A pick added , at the Old house .
