Do you use Google Earth and it's Time Slider?

Awesome info. I use Google Earth all the time, along with the Timeline feature. I've located some old barrack foundations using this feature, and plan on searching these areas after speaking with base authorities. On the reserve training base, a lot of WWII training took place during the 40's. There's also an old German POW camp site. I'm not sure of the response I'll receive when I request permission to MD here, but should know Wednesday. Maybe if I agree to turn over any artifacts to the base museum....

I'm waiting to hear how it works out for ya! GL & HH!!!

Just look at the first sticky in research and getting permission. You should be able to find historic maps for your area.

Thanks for sharing this....I just spent 90 minutes or so getting some maps set up, can't wait to get in the field and see how this does.....This looks like a killer tool!

let me know how it goes. I'd like to refine/correct any issues on the tutorial.

Hopefully Saturday I can get out as long as the melt off continues, and we'll see how it goes on the ground....
The only thing I noticed when setting it up had to do with installing the software on my Mac. I was able to download the app on my phone, but never really found what I was supposed to download on my Mac. Nonetheless, it didn't really seem to be an issue, as I created the map section I wanted to work with, converted it to a high res jpeg and emailed it to myself, opened it on my iphone and saved in on phone. The it was as simple as opening the app on my phone, importing the map and synching it to google maps. Its probably easier to do ona desktop, but synching the landmarks between the two maps was just toggling back and forth between the two of them and centering on crosshairs. I don't know if I missed something with the software for my Mac, but this seemed to work well, and I can't wait to get out and give it a whirl. especially since I found an old road in deer hunting season, and form some old maps can see where a number of old cellar holes should be. Could I find them without this, probably, but this is very cool! And actually there are several old homesites I have seen on old maps that I have never been able to find so I am hoping this will get me there. This gets me fired up, so I'll stop rambling, but keep you posted.

I've had a heck of a time finding any old maps of my area (Panama City Beach / Panama City) so if anyone has any resources for that and want to share them, I'd SURE appreciate it!

Thanks Robby4570. I just discovered the timeline feature in GE the other day and was looking at some sites like this and getting very excited. I like how you've taken it to the next level by marking the lines and plotting the coords.

My pleasure. If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

I found this post to be helpful. Thank you for your hard work on this one robby4570.

I use a combination of Google Earth, Historic Aerials, historic map works and Flash Earth to try a get an idea of where I want to look. As far as overlays, waypoints, GPS ccordiantes etc it doesn't do me any good. ATP does not have GPS and I'm probably the last person on the planet who does not carry a cell phone or have a GPS handheld. I just basically find a spot on the old maps. Compare it to either google or flash earth. Find a landmark I should be able to easily identify on the ground and find it that way.

Nothing wrong with the good old good old fashioned way.
 HH

Method I use is in GE I find something I want to check out/detect, say a foundation, I out a pin in and for titel I use the provided GPS co-ord's, so the pin shows the GPS.
Next I email the screenshot to myself using the GE email icon....
On my ipad I open my email, save said screenshot to photos and now I have it for ref and use my GPS in the car to get close to it, take my handheld and walk to the spot/s...

real fast and easy.....Can send anything you "see" in GE

Jim

Very interesting, I'll have to give this a closer look when I have some time to invest. Thanks for posting!

Great just great. NOW I am going to have to figure out the GPS unit thingy I was given.

Me and small complicated electronic thingys have an agreement.

I don't touch them and they don't end up in pieces when I get mad and throw them against a wall and stomp on the remains.

Irons, take the time and read your gps manual. Do some simple Geocaches in your immediate vicinity. Get the free account on http://www.geocaching.com/ Once you find a cache located near you, take your metal detector with you on one of the bike trails beaches ect... and navigate to that destination. In no time at all you will be marking waypoints of those good metal detector locations and the bread crumbs "tracks" will show you everyplace you have been. Very cool tool, a GPS unit is good to have.

Good Luck!

What GPS unit (or GPS app) did you get by the way?
