Do you "carry" while detecting?

I've thought about it, but haven't yet. Here's my bigboy.

I rarely leave the house without some form of concealed carry.
I pray that I will never need it but, I would rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it... just my 2 wheaties

Next to a Browning designed 1911, I like Browning designed P-35s second best. Nice gun Slasher. True single-action autos with steel frames are the easiest handguns to shoot well. I also own two old Hi-Powers in 9mm. The .45 is my favorite round with the .38 Super second. The 9mm is okay and seems just right for the sleek P-35.

Even though I shoot regularly I dont carry..., yet. Perhaps a metal detector shaft could be made that fires a 12 gauge round. Sort of a dual purpose tool. If the detecting is a little slow, maybe a little duck hunting.

For those of you who say you've been attacked... what are the stories there? I would love to hear them.

I'm a pretty big guy, 6'6" 210 so I don't think people would generally want to mess with me but I have my lesche on me if anyone would want to start anything which has never happened yet. I know it's no match for a gun but I can't imagine a situation that bad where I generally detect in very quiet parks in a very safe city.

wow! I didn't expect all these replies in such a short period of time. There was a guy in like the 2nd or 3rd post that said something about not wanting to metal detect if he has to carry a gun. Just to clarify, most concealed carry owners don't carry because they feel they are endanger of their life every day. its more of a safer than sorrier perspective. In my persepective "a right unexercised; is a right lost". Carry On and Hunt On

Carry?

Geez, I carry a lunch with me if I'm going to be out beyond luch time. I once asked a lady fishing from a chair if she wanted to fish with me in my boat, I was just off-shore. She said okay and got in. We spent the day together and at the end of the day I said; You were very brave to fish with a stranger, she said no problem...I Carry..then showed me her gun..I almost ****.

I love this story.

In reference to all that has been said above: I read once where someone said "it's better to hit your target with a .22 than to miss it with a .45" Truer words have never been spoken. That being said I live so far in the woods that I could carry if I wanted to but seldom do. I keep one in the truck and one in the Ranger but that is for hogs. How I hate them things, we are being run over with 'em...d2

Just curious if anyone openly carries or concealed carries while out detecting? I've heard some horror stories or people been robbed and what not. If you do carry what do you carry?

I have my Concealed carry permit and carry a Ruger LCP with Crimson Trace laser here in MN.

Ever since I got my CC license 12 months ago I carry a Ruger LCP. In fact I go no where without it! It's in my pocket right now as I'm typing.

After digging with Wolf-n-WA

We just did a hunt in Tacoma. Not really knowing the area I was not really sure about the area but Wolf was... he was packing heat. I only noticed at the end of the hunt. He grew up in the area and told me about a couple things about how it used to be and now the gangs are out there. It made me think. I'm thinking of getting my conceal carry permit as well. I've never needed to before but this is new territory. This is Washington State though. Everyone it seems has a permit here. When in Rome... Not to worry, I'm a 14 year military vet and have handled just about anything you can think of. I would not recommend carrying a handgun to someone untrained though. It can be used against you.

My weapon of choice is a Sig P220 45 ACP but this is too much to carry for a MD hunt. I might opt for a 40MM Sig. I'm not a Glock fan, I heard bad things about barrel wear.

For those who say it won't stop a crazed dope head or a Zimbamzie
warrior. That's fine. I will leave that stuff to you Clint Eastwood guys.
I am not that kind of target.

What I have to worry about is that druggie that needs a fix. He is
not sure of himself. That is why he picks an easy mark. Like a old
guy out metal detecting by him self.

I made an easy mark out of myself.

I was in a bad neighborhood. I had hunted there before and some gang
bangers started hanging out around my car. I left and they did not bother
me. They just looked at me.

I came back another day at a much earlier time. No one was around. I
kept facing the road encase anyone drove up.

All of a sudden, I was hit on my head. It almost took my legs out from
under me, but I kept standing. Then this skinny guy was trying to push
me down. He was behind me. I spun him around and was able to grab my
digger. His eyes got big and as he turned away, I tried to hit him.

Only you older guys might understand, but my body had a convulsion and
I just limply dropped the digger on his back. That was enough to make him
holler, but not enough to do any damage.

One strange thing was that he had a knife and never cut or stabbed me.

I was ashamed and humiliated for a long time. I did not like to talk about
it.

I am more cautious now.

I no longer worry about the philosophy, or the down side of carrying a gun.
I just do it.

Happy Huntin,

Haven't read the postings since I mentioned that I carry a .22 Beretta, and I see that started an avalanche of responses about how powerful one's handgun should be to do the job. Let me just add that I would carry a larger weapon if I had one, but at this time I do not. However, I am fully confident that the .22 will do the job due to the fact that as a small handgun it must be used at very close range to be somewhat accurate...and if I ever have to use it, it will be aimed at the face/head area of my assailant. I assure you, a couple of shots to the face will stop anyone.

Crazy story Tabdog. Thanks for sharing it. It's unbelievable how bold that guy was. At the very least you were able to fight him off and not get too hurt yourself.

I always carry my firearm. Usually CC but when I am geared up for metal detecting access to my weapon from the concealed position could be a problem. When I go out detecting I open carry on my alice harness. In Utah I am safer than in many other areas but much of that reason is that so many of our citizens carry. I hardly get a second glance for the gun but the rest of my getup invokes a smirk or two.

There is no substitute for being prepared in any situation.

Barrel wear? I have to say that I shoot A LOT and I've not had any trouble with it. Not to mean that it doesn't happen. Sig P220 wow what a great gun also!!! My husband, father and myself are all avid shooters and between us we shoot Sig's and Glock's. Love'em both!

I have a concealed permit, but have only carried once while metal detecting. That was only because of the park in the part of town I was detecting in. Afterwards I felt kind of foolish because for the 3 hours I was there, I saw no one. However, just like not having an umbrella, it always rains.

When I carry I carry a Bersa Thunder .380 with Crimson Trace grips. I do a lot of business travel so when I'm away, it spends a lot of time on the nightstand next to my wife. This is why I make it a point to call before I come home after dark:lol:

Carry? Always. Period.

I carry no matter what I am doing.

Pa John is right.
Trouble is always looking for an easy target.

When you do carry and you don't know which caliber to choose, remember that any caliber will do as long as it begins with a 4!
