Had a nice lead on a Civil War site and got shot down. Someone (maybe from here!) beat me to the punch about a month ago.

Also asked at an old farmhouse on Friday. His brother's house, it turns out. They are getting it ready to sell and he told me it was "in estate" and didn't want the hassle of asking the lawyers, etc.

Still just finding clad, too. Have a hunting buddy from here that is going to go hunting with me soon. Hopefully that will change things.

"Keep on keeping on", right? ;-)

I know of a Confederate campsite close to my house. Problem is, there are literally dozens of horses that 'use' that area. Can't go there w/o stepping in it.

 Heck, that's a small price to pay to find some CW goodies. I'd throw on a pair of rubber boots and go at it. Already have to deal with a lot of s**t in this hobby anyways.

My thoughts exactly! Your food is grown in it! I would rather detect in a field of horse manure all day, than step in steaming pile of dog chit once...

You guys are forgetting one thing...the smell! Who wants to detect while puking? LOL

Right!!

You can think of it like this...

It is a game of numbers and probability. The more holes you dig the better your chances of finding something good. But it doesn't end there.. You can increase your odds of finding something great/older considerably....

Private properties are great places, family, friends, friends of family, friends of friends etc.... But like I said, it is a numbers game, private properties do not have the numbers that old parks had. An old park may be pounded but your chances of finding a silver could be just as good as a private property.

If you want to get your numbers of old finds up you need to get your numbers of junk and newer finds down.. The only shallow targets I dig are 83 and up.. I don't look for gold too much.. You are not going to find any cool older stuff when you are spending 95% of your field time digging zincs and pulltabs.. I skip a ton of shallow targets but I will dig any quarter signals because those add up real quick and also bigger silver rings come in at those numbers.

Do you want gold, or old? Because the approach for either would be pretty different. I will dig up nickel signals if they are deeper in a yard, or deep enough in a park for chances at a gold ring or a buff. Otherwise keep swinging till you get that good deep signal... Parks around here can still be alright, you just have to get real choosy on what you dig because the wheats and silver start around 8-9 inches deep and they are few, but you can find more of them if you spending time looking for them instead of digging clad...

Good luck!!

The smell, and health hazards are my point. I am not really bothered by the smell of horses, just smells like a barn to me...

Horse manure is just digested grass. Not like regular poo. I have three horses and shovel out three stalls every day. I would walk in it, swing in it, and sleep in it to hunt there.

Puking? I am guessing you are a city boy. Not that I didn't grow up in the city but I never had issue with horse manure. It is what makes my garden grow so well. Fresh spread chicken manure is a bit strong but horse manure is a smell that reminds me of happiness.

You got me, the Ozarks forest is a big ole city!

Health hazards? You could eat a horse apple and probably have no problems. I wouldn't warm it in your soup and let it set a few days but that aside there is nothing that is going to jump up and hurt you. I am in horse manure every day, like all horse owners, none of us have health problems from manure.

There was a time, not long ago, that we all stepped in it and smelled it every day. People didn't bath or wash it off but once a week or so or at the end of the winter in many cases. The coins we find spent there lives going place to place on horses. Our food was delivered on horses and grown in horse manure.

It is kind of frightening how twisted our brains have become that we are scared of what used to be every day natural. Your food wasn't born in that little plastic wrapper folks!

Not picking on you in particular Ice Scratcher. I just am amazed every day at how far we have all come from the reality that was once life. I raise and eat chickens. People all the time say "I could never kill and eat something I raised". I tell them they would be dead if they were born 100 years ago.

Don't even get me started on sidewalks. Flat perfect places for us to walk because god forbid we get dirt on our shoes or stroll on an uneven surface. One could fall:roll:

Go hunt the confederate camp ground, Doug!!!!!!!

I think you totally missed what I wrote... When I mentioned "health hazards" I was referring to the poo of a carnivore/omnivore, not a herbivore...

Probably, just like I missed Ozark's location, my bad. Sorry, I got me all worked into a tisy thinking about someone not hunting a great place because of horses. I am a bit better now. Only a bit though until he goes and hunts it. My rant stands though! Everyone, go hug a horse, get back to your roots!

Oh good lord, I looked up, you were not even the one talking about horses. I am very idiot today

I hope things change for the better and you can hunt your site.

Excuse me, everyone. I am not always this bad. maybe I need some coffee :?:

Sorry Dougmiester. I really did not mean to start on your thread like I did. It really is a sign of the times when one has to worry with lawyers and such. Just ask around some more. There are sure to be more places close by that you can hunt.

This is exactly how it is around here. All of these good sites have horses or some kinds of animals living on it. Sigh.
