Congrats on the permission!

Huh ? Well if you can't be there physically from the git-go, then ... how does someone metal detect ? haha
Well, I certainly did not expect to open such a huge can of worms by posting my excitement about gaining permission. Of course if there were no signs, I would have been comfortable just walking out there and detecting without any problems. But the signs and the fact that they mentioned "area under surveillance" made me feel cautious. What if the police show up? How would I explain myself when there are signs at every entrance? In addition, even though it was on a Saturday and the weather was outstanding, there was not a soul in the park; I assumed it was due to the signs. I agree that asking permission could be a bad idea, as once someone says no and you're caught, you have no excuse for being there. If you do not ask permission and are caught, you can play the "I didn't know" card. The signs trumped that possibility though.
Great article on detecting public places

If they say yes that means you didn't have to ask.
Even with "NO TRESPASSING" signs posted? I would think in this case they are saying "yes" only because you asked.
I wouldn't worry about opening up "a can of worms" as you put it. That can be said for most any post on any thread. Those that are worried about opening up the can of worms are usually not the ones interested in all the points you made in your original posts. They usually come to these threads and cut down those that want to discuss issues other than the simple "ask" issue. Good to see you are interested in more than one side of issues.
Just because that worked in your state and city that may not be the case everywhere.
Pulled up to a 100+ year old middle school last Saturday to detect the adjacent park only to find "No Trespassing - area under surveillance" signs flanking every entrance. Very discouraging; however, I returned home and looked up the school and sent the principal an email requesting permission to hunt the area. She forwarded my request to the superintendent of schools who then submitted my request to the Mayor's office. Was just granted written permission today by the Mayor's chief of staff. Just goes to show you that instead of being discouraged and writing it off, it always helps to try to get permission. Good luck out there.
REALLY??!!? Do work at being a PIA or does it come naturally??

I just want to make something clear - again. I do not ask for permission to hunt every public park that I find. If you read my original post, you will see that I went there with every intention of getting out of my car and spending the better part of the day detecting that park. It was the "no trespassing" signs that were the catalyst for my asking permission. It is clear that some of you would ignore these signs, but I try to obey the law the best I can. I am new to this forum and had I known this would cause such turmoil, I certainly would have kept this to myself.
