Detectorists of the deep south

Come on, this is a happy space. No Ad Hom attacks. Lets keep it cheerful in here!

Best I can do is offer proof, but it will be part of a bet! I just thought someone would want a free MD'er. I'll buy you or anyone else any model of Detector if you are right! Now ... lets move on... smile!

Grandpa says you have to work to have nice things. Too much Starbucks and idle time on your hands breeds discontent and few real friends.

Why the move to southwest Alabama?
Are you talking about the Mobile metro area(Mobile county, Baldwin county) or like Choctaw, Clarke, Monroe counties? There is a huge difference in those areas and the kind of detecting you can do. There is also a huge difference in the demographics, population density and traffic congestion.

(Edit: Also, I suggest you attend one of your local genealogical societies, sons of confederate veterans groups or civil war round tables to get a true idea of what multigenerational Southerners are like and to make metal detecting connections. Many of the folks in those groups are avid relic detectorists. Remember to join sovc, you must have a direct relative in a confederate civil war unit but you can still attend meetings and enjoy the historical talks.)

West Mobile. No more cold weather Indiana where the shutdown season for detecting is 7 months. Plus my brother live closer now. Thanks for the suggestions. I am a non-rebellious northerner who gravitates towards stronger feelings for border state Kentucky.

I recently moved to southwestern Alabama. Are there any firsthand bad experiences of that you have ever encountered in the lower south? Fire ants, scorpions, snakes, gators, spiders, ticks?

Why would you move to Alabama ? Nick Satan resides there. Home of the dirtiest football program in the history of ncaa football. A state where cousins marry and people kill family members because their sanctified Tide loses a game. It should be sawed off and pushed into the gulf of Mexico.

Do yourself a favor. Get out of there as fast as possible. All the critters combined that you mentioned aren't as bad as one Tide fan.

I would have picked a state with less taxes on retirement income.
There should be some good places to detect as the area is one of the oldest settled because of the quality of the port.

I f you are eager to get rid of some of that money that you seem to have plenty of , i might suggest you hit the Donate button at the top of the page , it helps support the forum and you get a nice supporter status under your name. It is expensive to keep a great forum like this on line. No one is required to contribute to be on here , they keep it free for everyone.

Glad you posted this Dave , it reminded me that it had been a while since my last donation . I wanted to donate more than just my flapping mouth .

I was riding with a friend, and he was talking about having a metal detector. I said, you know I've had about everything I ever wanted, but I've never had a metal detector. So, I ordered a Simplex from Amazon. Soon found out the Legend had multi Freq, so I ordered it a few days later. The found out the Deus was the best, so I ordered it, then a few days later the CTX.

I wanted one years ago, but.. I was never willing to pay the price for the Whites, that was a lot of $ back then, and I did not have $ to burn then.

I think there is an inherent drive in us, to find something that is lost. And I believe that emotion may be evoked when we metal detect, and it just becomes habitual. Just like you use the prey drive with a dog, to channel it for training. I think we have an energy in us to find what is lost.

When you look at things rationally, there is no reason to do anything, we are all on a conveyer belt, gradually getting closer to the drop off point, down the shoot, into the pits of death. Gotta do something to pass time on the conveyer belt!

Funny! That is like hearing someone say "I really never knew how to drive before so I bought a Cadillac, but the cup holder wasn't big enough so I bought an SUV, though that SUV had a little bit too much vibration and it shook the carbonation out of my Pepsi so the next day I bought a Hummer.

As long as I am not shot at going up the Mobile River in my wooden canoe, I will
be okay.

You forgot the bears, jaguar, panthers, yellow flies, horse flies and mosquitoes.

I saw two fox a couple of weeks ago. Tails twice as long as their bodies, but someone said there are no fox here.

And then there is the yet to be seen Tommybug, Henrybug, Sarahbug and Doodlebug.

What we don't have is bone chilling winters that begin early and end late and keep you from metal detecting for many months. Winter is some of the best times to metal detect in the south. No stinging yellow jackets, spiders, no heat, no snakes, thick weeds.

Yes in my opinion we probably have the longest season for metal detecting except for maybe a month or two of really hot dry or hot and muggy weather in july & aug. Only this year it started in June.

Then you have the beaches from VA down to Florida, up around to Alabama.

We are a little short on silver and old coins since the south pretty much got left out in the industrial revolution which created lots of northern middle class neighborhood featuring lot of dropped silver.

But the next time the earth changes its magnetic poles we will get all those goodies.
