It may take Mr. Moneybags a while to respond as he is in the process of getting his script writers together to make a reply to you .

Love this country and all her history must be learned—the ugly too! I hope to see all 50 before my time expires. Things I love about the south far outweigh the things I hate ( fire ants, heat, gnats, chiggers ). Learn to love ppl and respect the differences and detect!!!

You must be walking.

We use to take our boat through the intercostal waterways, and those boys down south would shoot at our yachts/house boats.

Ever seen the movie Deliverance? SQUEEL LIKE A PIG!

That was suppose to be set in Georgia and no you nor they didnt.

I can't imagine why any rich person would metal detect, unless he's into colonial or Civil War relics. How much of a thrill is it to find a $300 gold ring if you're earning $3000 a week (for example). I just don't get it...

It is ONLY 1 of 2 things. #1 , it is simply not true. #2 , they do it for exercise.

I hope this thread doesn't lead up to a Civil war here on the forum.

Grant and Lincoln feared the Civil War might end up a stalemate and grind out for decades as low grade Guerrilla warfare. That's what it seems like on this site when people get into endless arguments. Where is the camaraderie and greatest generation type of brotherhood anymore?

It's still here , it's just some people don't want to be a part of it .

For the thrill of the hunt

defiantly not for the money , but the thrill of the hunt. Was out for about 2 hours today and got skunked, but time out there doing it was priceless.

I was riding with a friend, and he was talking about having a metal detector. I said, you know I've had about everything I ever wanted, but I've never had a metal detector. So, I ordered a Simplex from Amazon. Soon found out the Legend had multi Freq, so I ordered it a few days later. The found out the Deus was the best, so I ordered it, then a few days later the CTX.

I wanted one years ago, but.. I was never willing to pay the price for the Whites, that was a lot of $ back then, and I did not have $ to burn then.

I think there is an inherent drive in us, to find something that is lost. And I believe that emotion may be evoked when we metal detect, and it just becomes habitual. Just like you use the prey drive with a dog, to channel it for training. I think we have an energy in us to find what is lost.

When you look at things rationally, there is no reason to do anything, we are all on a conveyer belt, gradually getting closer to the drop off point, down the shoot, into the pits of death. Gotta do something to pass time on the conveyer belt!

I recently moved to southwestern Alabama. Are there any firsthand bad experiences of that you have ever encountered in the lower south? Fire ants, scorpions, snakes, gators, spiders, ticks?

You forgot the bears, jaguar, panthers, yellow flies, horse flies and mosquitoes.

The South is a terrible place to live. Nothing to see here. Move along!

The part of the south I live in was mostly occupied by the north from the earliest part of the war, with some guerilla activity by the south (Moseby). My neighborhood was built on top of US fortifications. There is even a sign at the Metro station at the top of the hill marking Lincoln's visit to the fort that was there after an ammo dump blew up. Unfortunately, MDing in the park at the bottom of the hill is forbidden. I think some cannon emplacements are still visible.

I'm in northern VA, so I don't know if you accept it as part of the south for some of the reasons stated above.

I think the guerilla warfare was a real possibility after Rutherford B. Hayes "stole" the election from Democrat Sam Tilden. Florida's electoral votes, which would have been for Tilden, were thrown out. As a compromise, Hayes and the Republicans promised to end Reconstruction, before it had accomplished its goal. BTW, Sam Tilden won the popular vote.

Sam Tilden was a northern Democrat. I don't know what would have happened to Reconstruction if he had been elected. It's possible Reconstruction was going to end early in any case.

Why the move to southwest Alabama?
Are you talking about the Mobile metro area(Mobile county, Baldwin county) or like Choctaw, Clarke, Monroe counties? There is a huge difference in those areas and the kind of detecting you can do. There is also a huge difference in the demographics, population density and traffic congestion.

(Edit: Also, I suggest you attend one of your local genealogical societies, sons of confederate veterans groups or civil war round tables to get a true idea of what multigenerational Southerners are like and to make metal detecting connections. Many of the folks in those groups are avid relic detectorists. Remember to join sovc, you must have a direct relative in a confederate civil war unit but you can still attend meetings and enjoy the historical talks.)
