Curse of Oak Island TV Program

Looks like someone palmed a coin worth 11 dollars and dropped it, found it with a metal detector for props...

:workforgold::laughbounce::woohoo::laughbounce: I just checked ebay for a generic check on a 16th century pirate coin. This is one:oldguy:coin and I was sure it would be too expensive or rare to just toss into the swamp...I didn't say Norwegian...but 5 for $18.00:?: Good thing though because had they been scarce or too expensive they probably wouldn't have found one in the swamp...no, no, no, I did NOT say Norwegian...and we wouldn't have another season. But, I'll still watch it regardless!

Yeah....but at least they will keep going.
But now, except for what NBC chooses to show me of the olympics, I am out of good stuff to watch until Vikings starts.....

Ditto on that upstatedigger. I'll ( but not my wife) skip a razor clam dig to watch the Vikings. Should I be surprised they are back on for another season? Usually, every time I like a program, and the government TV spy camera built into my TV sees that I like it, they take it off the air. I sort of wish they would merge "The Curse" and Vikings" and do a program where a bunch of bored Vikings dig a 100+ foot pit to bury a rock Jesse James used to write down where the treasure of the KGC treasure is buried in Kansas:lol:

I was thinking the same thing, well, not the Jesse James part, but it fits. And then the Vikings come back, and they're really pissed. So first they teach them how to cut down trees properly, then they go viking on everyone, take the treasure and hide it really good somewhere else.

Yeah, I agree with the coin being a "plant" which seems to be a common occurrence on Oak Island when money is about to dry up. That coin will get them possibly another season on TV and renewed interest from investors. Also the fact that in a swamp like that it's still only maybe 3-4inches deep seems odd, I do find shallow coins from 300+ years ago but they are usually in normal soil, not quick sand like swamp mud. Could I be wrong, sure. Besides who buries gold or silver (with full intentions of coming back for it) and then builds a swap over the site. Pirates like to spend money, not hide it. Good luck telling a crew you're going to bury their hard earned loot and leave it for months or years. If the coin was really dropped there in the 1600's it could also just be from a ship stopping for water or repairs. The Atlantic coast was a hot bed of activity by the 1600's and Spanish coin was widely used by everyone. I'm not so sure they will get a second season due to the fact that they seemed puzzled on where to go next, the swamp thing seems to be a bust, the holes were abandoned for a reason....

They showed all the older episodes last night. It was pretty interesting, but also disappointing that all they found was one coin. But then again, they probably need the next season's show to fund continued looking...

For the first time tonight I watched the credits and was surprised to find that one of the sponsors was something called "Oak Island Tourist***." There are a lot of backers for this program but I had no idea it was so big time until I saw all those sponsors. What did you think about all the ghosting and disappearance of the gold/silver lining to the swamp? It was no real surprise that the guy got false signals...personally, I wish I had a treasure chest for every time I've chased my own ring around the divot with my GPP:roll:.

Seems like a coin would sink deeper after that many years. Its suspend in decomposing vegetation, which is not 400 years old, and silt, muck, etc. Seems like as the vegetation grows, and decomposes, any object would sink, maybe faster than in soil, and be VERY deep by now. Thats the big thing thats got me wondering.

This is too funny to simply ignore. I really got a chuckle out of your terminology. So, you think someone landed on the island to take a "vike" on a "viking" trail they conveniently found. But, possibly, a group who had built the "viking" trail told them the trail was private property and if they wanted to "vike" get their own trail. So, the vikings "viked" the, I didn't say Spaniard's, tails and took their treasure and "viked" right off the island. Now that is a story line that doesn't need a pit or a Spanish coin to sell...I love it:clapping:

Whatever the outcome I am sure it will still be interesting. I was sure they would run a marathon of all of the episodes today but it seems that the Ax Men were more important. I don't agree!

As for books, I like to read but it was a chore to go to the store for a new book. I broke down and bought a Kindle and now I can get a new book in minutes when I need one. It takes longer to decide on one than to have it delivered. It makes it easier to carry my whole library when I go somewhere too.
Cliff

Can't these (The Curse episodes) be downloaded from the internet and watched on a computer or TV with a computer/ USB connection. There will be plenty of reruns, and I'll bet money on that. There is another episode of "The Curse" at 11:00 PM tonight on the History Channel. I'm on Pacific Standard Time and have Direct TV, so whether this is any good any place else or not, I'm not sure. The one at 11:00 may also just be a repeat of the program earlier. But, I'll watch reruns anyday before I watch the Ellen show or some other drama queen. About the Kindle...I have looked at one several times, and they are appealing in both price and convenience. My problem is that, like today there was too much snow to take the metal detector out, so I went trail walking. Many of the undeveloped areas around us have trails which leave the populated areas and cut through some pretty dense woods and brush. Surprisingly, along the trail I met a mom and her two teen aged daughters who were making flowers in the slush of the lake with snow balls. The lady and I had a nice talk for about 20 minutes until a older guy hiked by. He stopped a short distance away, and during the next 30 minutes he gave me a history of the entire area, including information regarding two new digging sites I'll hit when the snow is gone. Point...there is nothing like a real walk regardless of what type tread mill you have and there is nothing like the feel and smell of a real book as a companion to pass time with. Please don't take the way I look at Kindle, or any other device which affords a window to information, as a negative thing. I get lost in the library and search for information in books exactly the same as I lose myself in my metal detector head sets and search for things under the ground. We spend as much time on the road as possible and there is always plenty of time to read. I like history and old maps compliment my metal detecting research. Does Kindle have the ability to download and store maps too? Our local library has book sales and, at .25 cents a book, I can stock the motor home to the point of flattening the tires for a few dollars. The ease of using a Kindle, say while on a exercise bike or treadmill sure sounds interesting. Probably taking one into the sauna or swimming pool is pushing the envelope al little, don't you think?

My experience at digging 1600's Spanish coins is zilch, especially when head first in a swamp, so any comment I make is to be taken as glop. But, this was a tiny coin, and even at that, apparently badly erroded..they couldn't read the date. I think, if coated with biological material in the biological soup of the swamp, it may even float above the bottom, wherever that may be. My wonderings is why this single coin threw two "expert" metal detectorists off and their mega-complex GPR was less effective than my old Bounty Hunter Outback. I noticed that the MDer with the CTX was wearing a ring and probably a watch. I'll bet he had keys in his pocket and you could see metal strap buckles hanging all over his jacket. And I'd swear that it was a piece of twisted wire they were chasing around when they were talking about targets "just" disappearing. The wire didn't disappear, he kept pushing it out of the way. It's surprising that they found the coin regardless of where it was lost, I didn't say tossed, considering the way they were tromping around and squashing everything deeper into the mud. I did catch the "Hot" rocks though, and seeing them brought up made a believer of me.

Yup, I saw that too, made me instantly super-suspicious that coin was planted as a carrot for the proverbial mule... for funding the next season purposes. I mean, if they were going to pull real treasure out of there, why not a nice chunky gold or silver coin instead of a chintzy copper one?

I thought the first signals they got were probably old beer cans sloshing around in that swamp muck myself, seems like the ones I hit here at the lake where it's mushy ground come up as a pretty good sounding signal in the silver range, and even my little F2 can find them at about 18" or so, but they do seem to "move" around a lot for whatever reason.

I did get a kick out of the diver wearing a ring while using a pinpointer, that was pretty funny and is one of the reasons I don't wear my rings while detecting aside from not wanting to lose them, cause I've done that myself too.

That kind of sounds like 'America Unearthed', with Scott Wolter's version of the history of America. You never know who he'll come up with evidence of having been here a looooong time ago and what shenanigans they were up to. It may be nuts, maybe not, but I like it! :D

Sarge,

I hear what you are saying about real books. I have a small collection of them myself but I would hate to have to carry them all around the country when I travel. The Kindle allows me to carry all of my books with me in a small appliance. It also allows me to purchase new books without searching out a book store with a decent selection. There are also quite a lot of older books available for free. Some of these have information of historical value to them. The Kindle is not the perfect alternative for all situations but for me it works better than most. I have precious little time to go to book stores and libraries with working 6 days a week. When you have time, go to the Amazon Kindle site and see what they have to offer. It just may be another option for you too.

Back to the topic at hand, I was hoping for more than 1 copper coin but we have to take what we get. I see some people calling it a "plant" but I predicted that attitude early on in this thread. In my opinion, if I was going to plant something to keep the suspense going it would have been a gold or silver coin that many people would recognize, not a copper coin that required an explanation. I just hope the series continues as I still there is more there to be discovered even if it is not gold or silver.
