Ha!
We will see...looks pretty cool, a Compadre on steroids maybe.

Has anyone attempted to adjust the ground balance on a Compadre ? I did the sensitivity adjust, can get 6 1/2" on dimes but signal is at its limit, which is fine for tot lot hunting. I just wonder if there would be a greater advantage from ground balance setting tweak ?

A possibility if you hunt in soil that is way off of optimal but there is a greater chance of screwing things up if you go a little too far either way...enough to make it unusable.
A few I read about tried it and were successful, really high tech experienced types that do repairs and heavy mods, but I can't recall any that mentioned much of a depth gain, maybe just a bit quieter but not much more.
A couple others tried it and messed it up so bad they had to send it back to Tesoro which wasn't a big deal because they were fixing and calibrating everything for free back then.
Now it will cost you $50 plus shipping and they might do that even if you are the original owner for all I know if they suspect you got in there and changed the settings.

Mine got to the 5-6" area here in really bad dirt and when I brought it to almost perfect soil out in Kansas I didn't see much gain at all...still got to about 6".

It is not a depth demon, the small and 7" coil versions 6" is normal, 8" models should go a bit further anyway right out of the box.

If you do attempt it mark the pot before you even try, just slight changes if you do adjust it and use Monte's power balancing technique to get it optimal...but again I am not recommending it unless you have bad depth or noise issues.

I have hunted in horrible soil, great soil and found some really old stuff in both and out of everything I have found including targets with a Vaq and my F70 which are depth monsters 98% of all over it have not been any deeper than 6" anyway.
Including all my gold, the heaviest, densest metal I go after.

Thank you for the response. I have the 8" coil, measured a few times, can't break the 6 1/2" barrier on a dime. I often wonder how many I miss in that depth range as its at its very limit. Depending on direction, it may be not be repeatable at that depth but I dig everything when it sounds remotely good. I almost tried the coil swap mod and would like to try the RSD coil on it which makes me want the Mojave since my RSD coil is a 5 pin. I think I am happy with compadre as is. My compadre has been amazing at what it produces for a shallow hunter, I'd hate to mess it up.I'm pretty sure they would charge you $50 to fix it, even if you bought it new since you shouldn't have messed with it in the first place and rightfully so.... Thanks again.

From your signature it looks like you got a lot of great detectors, several that will get you down near China if you want, I do to so I think of the Compadre as a putter in my arsenal...perfect for the short putting game just as it is.
In most tot lots my Compadre will work fine, in a few older ones with deep chips piled on over the years my F70 gets the call if I suspect targets might be really deep.

If you bought yours new I would give a call to Tesoro and maybe talk to Rusty about this and pick his brain.
Maybe he might think it is lacking and they can get it working better for you if you have decent low mineralized soil.
I have even heard of a few sending some local soil in with their detector for true calibration.
Couldn't hurt to call.

Good analogy. I am liking the T2 classic , there is a lot to like, it does everything well. The Compadre is what started it all for me. Every household should have one.

You know, even if I get a Mojave ,which I will. I don't think I am going to sell the Compadre. I use to say every household should have a Compadre. Maybe every household should have a Compadre and a Mojave in it ?:?:

Still want to see if it will double beep on close targets to big metal...the Compadre's best superpower....hope so.

Still will be a market for the little C if it does...there is still about a $90 difference between them and that will matter to some.

I am not in the market right now, I have enough detectors that fill my needs just fine so far so the arsenal is full...but that could change.

I'm actually looking towards an AKA machine next. That whole hodograph concept has me reeling with anxiety to own one. The looped signal on a bottle cap is out of this world. I want one for that reason.I thought I was going with a Deus but I have changed my mind for good on that machine. I have decided to save my dug clad up and buy the Mojave as well. Don't ask me why, it has to be Earl's fault.

From the videos, I bet it does- the reset is incredibly fast.

Don't know why I haven't been getting notifications on new posts. It's been almost a year since I have been a member of "The Church of the Compadre" on this thread. I still have fun with my Compadre. I took Digger27's advice and run it in all metal. I mean turn it on and leave it right after it turns on. I have found tiny stuff because it just sounded like a clean signal. No scratchey sounds. I found a stud CZ earing on top of snow at a sled hill. I am now convinced that good targets just sound clean. This "hearing" has helped with my other machine with numbers.
Still, there's a site that only the Compadre can hunt. There's black sand galore. My other machine just went crazy there even turned down. I thought, I bet the "C" would do better. Yep, full all metal, quarters started popping up like no one had hunted there. (Thought I'd find a ring for sure but noo..) Yes, I got some chatter, (some but most of the area not much) but when I passed over a target, it was clear and solid. Coins don't go more than a few inches there. I found a 1936 nickel an inch down. So, that's another Compadre super power. It's my black sand beach unit and I love beach hunting with it. No numbers and I just walk along looking at the scenery while swingin'.
Yes, it's pure fun, walkinh around at the beach, looking around, enjoying the views, finding treasures. Yeah, nice!
Here's an easy mod. I had been hearing about wireless headphones. So, I thought I'd try one of those $12 fm transmitters. It runs on 2 aaa batteries. It's the size of a small match box with a little wire for a plug-in connection. I put a little velcro on the panel by the plug and stick it there. With the rain cover you cant see it. I use some Panasonic over the ear phones and a tiny mp3 player that gets FM radio and Walla, cordless with volume controll and an equalizer to really dial the sound. Man am I happy with this. $12 transmitter. $8 ear piece (not buds but the kind with a speaker) and a $35 sanyo sport mp3 player. When I want I can listen to music too! (Not simultaneously) Ha! It sounds great and I can tone down the harsh sound or turn it up. And, now I don't get tangled when setting it down. Plus the non ear bud type ear piece I can still hear sounds around me. Rattlers are in some areas here and bears etc.. I hear guys say they can hear a delay on some transmitters on other systems. I can't tell any difference. It's just the same to me. Plus, I can plug into any metal detector with this. I love my wireless Compadre black sand ninja unit!

A solution for the loud annoying battery check. The Sunray pro gold head phones. There is a overload switch function that really muffles the battery start up, you don't need to take them off while it cycles through the battery check.I wish I had them last year.:D

I always turn my compadre on before I put my headphones on:yes:

bibelot,

Glad I bought the Ratphones Max over-the-head phones years ago, as these also have an overload function and I have been happy with them.

The only negative is the leather ear cup pads are showing cracks, even though I wiped them with a clean paper towel moistened with warm water and squeezed out, to remove any sweat acid and then wiped with a dry paper towel, after every hunt. I did this religiously for several years until the cracks started showing and then I got lazy from then on.
I should have followed-up with a good leather conditioner after wiping dry. I'll buy replacement pads eventually.

I looked at the Sun Ray Pro Gold Metal Detector Headphones SKU: SRPGMDH1 on Big Boys website and note they also have soft leather muffs, so if your muffs haven't cracked yet, you might want to use the clean and protect method I described above, including a good leather conditioner, after each hunt.

Good Luck on every hunt !

Thanks for the info.I was told the Killer bee has the same filter as well.

I'm not seeing a classified flooded with compadres for sale. :?:

Why would there be?
First, I assume you are referring to people dumping these for a Mojave but getting one right now is not easy.

Two, even if people do want one when it comes to upper end units it makes sense to sell a mid to high range used detector for hundreds of dollars to help finance the purchase of another high dollar detector to replace it.
In this price range what are you really going to get for a used Compadre, less than $160 for sure...it isn't as important to go through the hassle of breaking down, packing, shipping and all on as detector when the one you are aiming to replace it can be paid for by the clad than many find sometimes on a yearly basis.

Three, not everyone sells detectors to buy new ones.
I still have every one I have ever used, plus I switch around between many from time to time.
I might not use my Vaq or Compadre a lot but I do use them here and there and I will never get rid of them.

Four, the Mojave is new technology, or reworked and pumped up technology, anyway, and supposed to be very capable...but that doesn't make the Compadre totally obsolete.
It still does amazing things at a bargain price...that extra $90 for the Mojave might be a big deal to some.

Five, not everyone is into getting the newest or as it has been called by some the latest "flavor of the month" tool the minute the new one comes out.
There are plenty of what they call early adopters out there but that is not everyone in this hobby.

The price of the Compadre is about the same as the price of a decent coil, going from the Compadre to a Mojave isn't exactly the same as upgrading from an AT Pro to an E Trac or CTX...many will do that but may opt to keep both Tesoros in the arsenal.

Also as great as the Mojave sounds not everyone might think they actually need one vs. the Compadre they already own.
Not all hunt in nail infested sites or have bad soil or are interested in changing coils or care about getting an extra inch or two in depth.
The extra performance and features might not be real important to many, not in a "must have" sort of way of thinking.
Just because a car company comes out with a model with a few new features doesn't cause everyone that have a two year old model of the same vehicle to immediately dump it and get the new one.
I have bad soil and sites with lots of iron but I have another detector that seems to work shockingly fine in this environment and the Compadre seems to work well enough, surprisingly well, so right now I am not in any hurry to get the new one.
It would be nice to have one and see what it can do here in my challenging soil but for me that would be it...nice, but not necessary at this time.
I find plenty with what I already own right now.
Even if I did get one someday I have a feeling that Compadre of mine would still always have a place in my personal arsenal of tools.

I am sure many Compadres will be sold over time because this new model came out, many new Compadres will never be bought because of it also and one day they might even discontinue the Compadre in favor of the Mojave...the Compadre was never one of their big money makers at the price they sell them and they admitted for years they probably made the thing too good and it took sales away from up-line models.

The big thing is right now the Tesoro line has been slightly expanded and now there are three great detectors in the entry level under $300 range.
This might change, eventually, but totally abandoning and dumping every Compadre out there to switch to a Mojave...maybe even the Silver but I don't see that happening for all the reasons I stated above.

I have every machine that I have bought as well. There was some talk of people dumping their compadres and upgrading to the Mojave. I don't whether it stems from three families living in one room ,where they simply don't have room for two machines or their wife rules them with an iron fist and set the rules to only one machine at a time ? I didn't think it was much to dwell on but then that was the only thing that came to mind to get this thread back up on top. I didhave a look at ebay, they are selling way higher than I would have thought.

No I haven't jumped off the Compadre train just yet.I did find a patch for us dedication followers.

I'm keeping mine too. I may get a mojave sometime in the future, but between my F70 and my compadre, I just don't see a need for it other than just wanting one. Those prices on ebay are really good. I think some people get in a bidding war and their need to win the auction precludes any common sense that they may have:?: On at least one of those auctions the person could have got a brand new one for less than $20 more. Some people probably don't realize you don't still get the full warranty buying used.
